Re: Basic Query
--- New Message on BDOTNET --- From: Mrinal Message 2 in Discussion Hi , Difference could be as simple as : Custom control - Control class derives from an already existing control class , essentially a standard class with a purpose to extend it further as per your needs . For e.g : take simple example System.Windows.Controls.Textbox , you can derive from it and create a control , that do some default validation like you override leave event , such that , it validates for date entry , instead of writing a separate logic in your application and where ever required can be simply gdragged and dropped and used . User Control - Here control's behaviour is not modified by itself . It is essentially a collection of controls , that need to repeatedly used through out the application or project , so instead of every developer going for his separate set , they can make a common user control , which can have some custom code / events as per needs . A good example for user control is in case of webforms , where there could be a portion of web page that needs a separate logic or frequent refreshing implemented as user control and everytime instead of whole page being posted back to server , only this part can be posted back and refreshed with latest values . Similarly for grouping a set of frequently used controls it's very useful in case of winforms too . Hope it helps , regards , Mrinal --- To stop getting this e-mail, or change how often it arrives, go to your E-mail Settings. http://groups.msn.com/bdotnet/_emailsettings.msnw Need help? Re: Basic Query
--- New Message on BDOTNET --- From: Ravikumar.V Message 3 in Discussion Web custom controls are compiled components that run on the server and that encapsulate user-interface and other related functionality into reusable packages. They can include all the design-time features of standard ASP.NET server controls, including full support for Visual Studio design features such as the Properties window, the visual designer, and the Toolbox. There are several ways that you can create Web custom controls: You can compile a control that combines the functionality of two or more existing controls. For example, if you need a control that encapsulates a button and a text box, you can create it by compiling the existing controls together. If an existing server control almost meets your requirements but lacks some required features, you can customize the control by deriving from it and overriding its properties, methods, and events. If none of the existing Web server controls (or their combinations) meet your requirements, you can create a custom control by deriving from one of the base control classes. These classes provide all the basic functionality of Web server controls, so you can focus on programming the features you need. If none of the existing ASP.NET server controls meet the specific requirements of your applications, you can create either a Web user control or a Web custom control that encapsulates the functionality you need. The main difference between the two controls lies in ease of creation vs. ease of use at design time. Web user controls are easy to make, but they can be less convenient to use in advanced scenarios. You develop Web user controls almost exactly the same way that you develop Web Forms pages. Like Web Forms, user controls can be created in the visual designer, they can be written with code separated from the HTML, and they can handle execution events. However, because Web user controls are compiled dynamically at run time they cannot be added to the Toolbox, and they are represented by a simple placeholder glyph when added to a page. This makes Web user controls harder to use if you are accustomed to full Visual Studio .NET design-time support, including the Properties window and Design view previews. Also, the only way to share the user control between applications is to put a separate copy in each application, which takes more maintenance if you make changes to the control. Web custom controls are compiled code, which makes them easier to use but more difficult to create; Web custom controls must be authored in code. Once you have created the control, however, you can add it to the Toolbox and display it in a visual designer with full Properties window support and all the other design-time features of ASP.NET server controls. In addition, you can install a single copy of the Web custom control in the global assembly cache and share it between applications, which makes maintenance easier.Web user controls Web custom controls Easier to create Harder to create Limited support for consumers who use a visual design tool Full visual design tool support for consumers A separate copy of the control is required in each application Only a single copy of the control is required, in the global assembly cache Cannot be added to the Toolbox in Visual Studio Can be added to the Toolbox in Visual Studio Good for static layout Good for dynamic layout Regards, Ravikumar.V --- To stop getting this e-mail, or change how often it arrives, go to your E-mail Settings. http://groups.msn.com/bdotnet/_emailsettings.msnw Need help? Re: Books on Design Patterns
--- New Message on BDOTNET --- From: gw2ksoft Message 11 in Discussion Hello Friends, I have the following book in .PDF (eBook) Introduction to Design Patterns in C# By, IBM T J Watson Research Center, February 1, 2002 Which is a beta version. This book is now published. But I find that there is not much changes to this. I found this book is very useful and best for any starter. This covers all the patterns of the orginal patterns book (Gof) one. For all the examples the author used the C# language. the interesting thing about this book is, ithas a small tutorial about the C# also for the reader who is comming from other languages like VB.NET - Hats-off to the author I also have code .zip of this book. Please mail me whoever is interested I will send it at free of cost. FYI: My intention is not distributing the book freely by breaking the copyrights but helping who cannot afford it. Some facts while working with DataReader and DataAdaptor/DataSet
--- New Message on BDOTNET --- From: Jigs Message 1 in Discussion Easy to use VS performance: At one end where dataadaptor is quite easy to use, where as datareader for better performance. RowCount: Often after we fire select query , we would like to know how many recrods we retrieved. With a DataReader its not possible to know rowcount unless we finish iteration through all rows. you will need to use another SELECT COUNT(*) query. the quick solution can be as below Dim dr As SqlDataReader Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(Select Count(*) from Jokes;Select * from Jokes, Me.SqlConnection1) Dim TotalRows As Integer Me.SqlConnection1.Open() dr = cmd.ExecuteReader() While dr.Read() TotalRows = dr(0) MsgBox(TotalRows.ToString()) dr.NextResult() While dr.Read() MsgBox(dr(JokeHeading)) End While End While Me.SqlConnection1.Close() With dataadaptor its easy, since data is stored in DataSet we get rowcount also we can iterate to next and previous records , which is not possible using datareader Passing Data between layers: one major limitation is you can't serialized datareaders, only alternative is DataSets.
