[beagleboard] Why is eclipse prompting me for password when trying to connnect to BBB through remote systems?

2016-02-01 Thread vinaydivakar1990

Hi Everyone,

I have recently started getting my hands on with the BBB and have been
following Derek Molleys blog. Presently I am following his video on cross
compiling using eclipse luna in chapter 7
http://exploringbeaglebone.com/chapter7/. However I am facing a bit of a
problem here trying to have access to my BBB using the remote systems on
eclipse. The problem is as follows:

When I try to connect to the BBB, a window pops up stating that I am using
the default username and password as shown in the image, as I had not set
any password for my BBB. Then, once I click "OK", then another window pops
up as shown in the image, prompting for requirement of password in order to
access the files on my BBB.

Now, I do not know what password is it asking for? and why is it prompting
for a password, as I haven't set any?. Can anyone provide me some support
on resolving this issue and shed some light If I am doing anything wrong?.

Thank you all in advance!

Regards
~VD

[beagleboard] Re: Cannot install minicom with Jessie 8.3 lxqt

2016-02-01 Thread guy . smith
Hello Robert,

Thanks for your reply.

I did the apt-get update and then apt-get install minicom and that worked
fine, thanks.

I then tried to follow the instructions at
https://github.com/beagleboard/bb.org-overlays/blob/master/readme.md

I type the following:

git clone https://github.com/beagleboard/bb.org-overlays
cd ./bb.org-overlays
dtc --version (response: Version: DTC 1.4.1-g1e75ebc9)
./dtc-overlay.sh
./install.sh
zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_BONE_CAPEMGR (repsonse:
CONFIG_BONE_CAPEMGR=y)
cd /opt/scripts/tools
git pull

The next five steps just say:

v4.1.x-ti:
v4.1.x-ti + Real Time:
v4.1.x mainline:
v4.1.x mainline + Real Time:
v4.3.x mainline:

and then a command for each one. I think this is to run a script which
updates the kernel. If I type uname -r I get 4.1.15-ti-rt-r43 so I'm
guessing I should run the script for "v4.1.x-ti + Real Time" (rt meaning
Real Time??).

Part of the response is:

info: you are running: [4.1.15-ti-rt-r43], latest is: [4.1.15-ti-rt-r40]
updating...

then the update proceeds and seems to completre OK.

The next two steps just say:

capemgr: enable/disable capes on kernel cmdline:
capemgr: enable/disable capes with slots:

I'm guessing that this is showing two different methods to enable/disable
capes on the BBB. Since the lernel command line seems to need cape part
numbers and I've no idea what these might be, I've tried the slots
commands. I type:

cat /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots

and I get:

 0: PF -1
 1: PF -1
 2: PF -1
 3: PF -1
 4: P-O-L- 0 Override Board Name,00A0,Override Manuf,cape-universaln

The instructions only show entries 0 to 3. I type:

 sh -c "echo 'BB-UART1' > /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots"

 and I get:

 sh: echo: I/O error

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

 Thanks.

2016-02-01 Thread Soapy Smith
I think there is a conflict you can see in the dts files for
"exclusive-use", P9.26.
Not sure, but I think this will cause the IO error message.
The dts files are in /opt/source/bb.org-overlays/src/arm.

cape-universaln:
"P9.26",

BB-UART1:
exclusive-use =
"P9.24", // uart1_txd
"P9.26", // uart1_rxd

Just to preclude the obvious, you are running this either as root or via sudo,

Hi all - I just wanted to put it out there that I've been pretty short on
time to work on PyBBIO (https://github.com/graycatlabs/PyBBIO), so if
there's any BeagleBone + Python developers / enthusiasts out there
interested I'd appreciate the help! Pull requests are always welcome, but I
would love to work towards getting one or more people added as
collaborators on the repo.

[beagleboard] Re: Why is eclipse prompting me for password when trying to connnect to BBB through remote systems?

2016-02-01 Thread Graham
Assuming an unmodified Debian release.

If you log in as 'debian', you need a password, which is given to you as
part of the log-in dialog.

If you log in as 'root', you do not need a password.

Re: [beagleboard] Failure to recognize SD card inserted at runtime

2016-02-01 Thread Hilmar Lapp
Any chance someone has an idea what might be going wrong here? I’d be happy to
reformat the card or take other destructive measures, but right now the device
for the card is not even showing up under /dev when the card is inserted.

Is it that the 4.1.15-ti-r40 kernel doesn’t support hot-plugging of uSD cards?
If so, anything I can do to change that? And I’m not sure how to boot into the
eMMC when the card is inserted in at boot. (The system will boot into the SD
card if inserted.)

I have a simple web-browser application, which I'd like to run in 60Hz

You cannot do 60Hz. The processor will not support 60Hz.

Doesn't seem un-normal...

what kernel?

uname -r

what rootfs?

lsb_release -a

For ethX, how do you have the rootfs setup to enable it?
(/etc/network/interfaces network-manager, etc..?)

Good point, we can't do that:

use "bone_eqep2b" for the one that doesn't conflict with hdmi..

[beagleboard] Questions about boot configuration

2016-02-01 Thread Zachary Jacobs
Hello,

I'm currently configuring a BeagleBoneBlack (Element14) to be used in a
remote location to store a very large amount of sensor data at any given
time. To do this, I wanted to boot directly from the SD card so I changed
the boot flag on the eMMC. However, after using this setup for a few
months, my SD card became corrupted. Whenever I try to boot using that
card, it boots into recovery mode and suggest that I run fsck. I tried to
do this with no success:
https://gist.github.com/zachjacobs/7f7d1d6f9bf3c8e424f9. I am using an SD
card that has built in wear leveling so I don't think the issue was caused
by too many read/write cycles.

My application may require intermittent power cycling so I need to limit
the chance of file system corruption and need to ensure a reliable boot up
procedure if that does happen. My initial thought is to have an image on
the eMMC and a duplicate image on the first partition of the SD card. If
the eMMC boot fails then boot from the SD card. In that scenario, both
boot methods would use a secondary partition on the SD card to store the
data. I have tried to set this up by using the latest Jessie snapshot
flasher image for the eMMC and the microSD/standalone image for my SD card.
When I boot with the SD card plugged in (without pushing the S2 button),
it skips the eMMC and boots straight to the SD card. When I boot without
the SD card, it boots using the eMMC just fine. Did I mess something up
that caused this? As you see in the boot sequence for the eMMC, uboot is
looking for the SD
card: https://gist.github.com/zachjacobs/df76521c58429bdd90d4. And boots
the SD card when the SD card is plugged in even though I'm not pressing the
S2 button: https://gist.github.com/zachjacobs/66c9e7e3e72baa1c06ab. I
noticed both logs show "trying to boot from mmc... bad magic". Does this
have something to do with it?

Questions:
Is my proposed bootup method in the first paragraph typical?
In the event of an eMMC corruption and a failed boot to emergency mode, can
I somehow protect myself from this partial boot sequence by trying to
automatically boot from the SD card?
Should I have concerns with eMMC corruption like I saw on the SD card?

In the second paragraph, Have I don't something to effect the boot order
within uboot that causes the SD card to be first?

Thanks!

Zach

[beagleboard] Re: Make a backup of contents of one beaglebone black and install said contents on a second BBB

2016-02-01 Thread canis
Hi Wally

Many thanks. I'll apologize in advance- there are terms I'm not familiar
with; I fear I'll have to take small steps

First question, is your system running from an SD card or the eMMC?

Running the eMMC

If running from an SD card, just "clone" or duplicate the card using
Windows or Linux tools. If its running from the eMMC (on-board storage).
It'll require knowing some Linux commands. For a beginner, I'd suggest
downloading an image as close to what is in your eMMC as you can, write it
to an SD and then mounting the SD card using a USB to SD card adapter (this
gets you the correct partition layout) on the BBB and using rsync or dd to
clone (copy) the / (root) and /boot partitions from your eMMC to the SD
card.

Is the image the list of files & folders visible upon opening BBB on my
laptop OR the list of folders and files within Cloud 9 OR something else?

Thanks again,
canis

Re: [beagleboard] Read analog inputs BBB running Debian Jessie

2016-02-01 Thread Caveman
That has definitely gotten me one step closer, thank you.

After using that command i typed

cat /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots
and got this result
 0: PF -1
 1: PF -1
 2: PF -1
 3: PF -1
 4: P-O-L- 0 Override Board Name,00A0,Override Manuf,cape-universaln
 5: P-O-L- 1 Override Board Name,00A0,Override Manuf,BB-ADC

Now the next step in the instructions that i've found says that I should
search the /sys/ directory for files with "ain" in the name
find /sys/ -iname "ain*"

this results in 0 files being found.

I guess the newer kernels don't use "ain" files for reporting the inputs.
Once again my googlefu has failed to return a useful result.

Anyone have any ideas on where exactly I find the data coming in the inputs?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: [beagleboard] Read analog inputs BBB running Debian Jessie

2016-02-01 Thread Caveman
Right after I posted the last question I found the answer.

this command
cat /sys/bus/iio/devices/iio:device0/in_voltage5_raw

got me the values from the AIN5 (p9.36)

Problem solved.

[beagleboard] Re: Reading BeagleBone Serial Number

2016-02-01 Thread Super Twang
Hi all,

FWIW, based on the answers in this thread, and a little messing around with
an element14 BBB rev C, the following command produces a result which seems
to match the serial number printed on the bottom of the bar code sticker,
attached to the left-most, outside edge of the P8 header.

I don't know why it is only 9 digits long, or if it is the official serial
number, but at least with the element14 series, it does seem to vary per
unit.

hexdump -e '8/1 "%c"' /sys/bus/i2c/device -s 80 -n 9; echo

Re: [beagleboard] MicroSD for removable storage on BBB?

2016-02-01 Thread Hilmar Lapp
I know this is 1.5 years later, but I seem to be running into the same
issue and am having a hard time finding anything as to how to solve this:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/beagleboard/IeLSZ19NbMU/xeND-QH0AAAJ

Interestingly, hot plug for the uSD card works for me on a 3.8.13 kernel
under Debian Wheezy (3.8.13-bone79 to be precise), so this must have been
fixed in the meantime. However, it fails to work on a 4.1.15 kernel under
Ubuntu 14.04.3 (4.1.15-ti-r40 to be precise). Would this be because it
wasn't compiled into the kernel?

If it was just SD card storage and you issue the unmount command sure
or if the kernel has some kind of hot swap mechanism to allow that

am i wrong that removing the boot device is a bad thing ?

[beagleboard] eMMC

2016-02-01 Thread Cerium
Hi!

I'm about to make a copy of the BBB, the hardware. My intentions are to
change the outline of the board so it can fit my use (i'm working on a
controller for my heating system). But, Im more of a HW-person so SW is not
my strong side. What if I use a different eMMC, e.g. MTFC4GACAJCN-1M WT, a
newer eMMC instead of the one on the BBB, MTFC4GLDEA-0M WT. Do I need to do
some changes to the distrubition (Linux debian)?
