[beagleboard] Can´t echo to slotsfile

2017-05-11 Thread Beagle Boner
Hi there,

I´m using Debian Jessie 8.7 (Kernel 4.4.54) on my BBB. In the long-run I
want to connect a LCD Display via the 16Bit Interface to the BBB. So I have
to disabled the HDMI (Audio/Video) by uncommenting this in the uEnv.txt
right?

##BeagleBone Black: HDMI (Audio/Video) disabled:
dtb=am335x-boneblack-emmc-overlay.dtb

I also commented this line.

#In the event of edid real failures, uncomment this next line:
#cmdline=coherent_pool=1M net.ifnames=0 quiet cape_universal=enable
video=HDMI-A-1:1024x768@60e

But for now I try to load anything to my slotsfile, for example the PWM,
but it seems like nothing happens:

debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ export
SLOTS=/sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots
debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ sudo echo "BB-PWM1-00A0.dtbo > $SLOTS"
BB-PWM1-00A0.dtbo > /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots

When I cat the slotsfile, nothing is loaded.

debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ cat $SLOTS
 0: PF -1
 1: PF -1
 2: PF -1
 3: PF -1

What am I doing wrong?

To connect a 4.3" LCD (it´s not a cape) to my BBB I have to load a LCD
overlay, for example the "BB-BONE-LCD4-01-00A1.dtbo", which my 4D Systems
LCD Cape uses, right? Can I adapt that dtbo to make it work with my
non-cape display?

Cheers,

Max

[beagleboard] Re: Flashing eMMC memory from SD card with Chipsee Debian Jessie

2017-05-11 Thread Radovan Chovan
I updated scripts using:
cd /opt/scripts/
git pull

Then I ran:
cd /opt/scripts/tools/eMMC/
sudo ./init-eMMC-flasher-v3.sh

Result:

eMMC has been flashed: please wait for device to power down.

Calling shutdown

But after removing SD card and switching SW8 to "eMMC", the BBB didn't boot
- all 4 USER LEDs are lit, but nothing else happens.

Re: [beagleboard] Where to get help?

2017-05-11 Thread rubberychicken69
Hi Robert,

I now have the camera working as well, sort of. It seems my error was
trying to set it up while ardupilot was running, the system is very laggy
and doesn't seem to behave well when ardupilot is running. When I killed
ardupilot I could get the camera working and when re-starting ardupilot it
stayed working but was very slow @ 640x480. Similarly, I can play basic wav
files over bluetooth but it will not play mp3 while ardupilot is running.

My goal was to have a camera on a rover using the beglebone blue without
needing any additional hardware, I have this now but it is too laggy to be
of any use.

As mentioned previously I believe this is a known issue but is anybody
working on fixing it and where is the right place to discuss this?

Cheers,

Brain

[beagleboard] Re: Help! Beaglebone Blue seems to have died

2017-05-11 Thread Chuck DuBois
I've had to move on to another project for the short term, but since
changing our process, we have not had an issue with the LIPO charging IC.
Discontinuing use of the USB power connector seems to be key, and this
setup has worked for multiple days without incident. We now cable to USB
for initial configuration *without standalone power*, then use Wi-Fi for
connectivity and a 12-15v power adapter exclusively.

[beagleboard] Set BBB Wireless as AP

2017-05-11 Thread edb1418
I'm trying to configure my BBB Wireless (latest kernel) w/ the latest
debian image as an access point. By default, the device is already set, as
I see BeagleBone- as an wireless SSID available to connect to. Is
there somewhere I can change this SSID and password, and assign a static IP
too. I've tried making a new hostapd.conf entry on my own, but it's
apparently getting overwritten somehow by the default configuration. Any
advice or link to where I can step through configuring this would be highly
appreciated... thank you!

Respectfully,
Eric

Re: [beagleboard] Can´t echo to slotsfile

Try
sudo echo BB-PWM1 > /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots
You can decompile the dtb by
dtc -@ -I dtb -O dtc -o BB-BONE-LCD4-01-00A1.dts BB-BONE-LCD4-01-00A1.dtbo

I also commented this line.

#In the event of edid real failures, uncomment this next line:
#cmdline=coherent_pool=1M net.ifnames=0 quiet cape_universal=enable
video=HDMI-A-1:1024x768@60e

But for now I try to load anything to my slotsfile, for example the
PWM, but it seems like nothing happens:

debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ export
SLOTS=/sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots

debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ sudo echo "BB-PWM1-00A0.dtbo > $SLOTS"
BB-PWM1-00A0.dtbo > /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots

When I cat the slotsfile, nothing is loaded.

debian@beaglebone:/lib/firmware$ cat $SLOTS
 0: PF -1
 1: PF -1
 2: PF -1
 3: PF -1

What am I doing wrong?

To connect a 4.3" LCD (it´s not a cape) to my BBB I have to load a LCD
overlay, for example the "BB-BONE-LCD4-01-00A1.dtbo", which my 4D
Systems LCD Cape uses, right? Can I adapt that dtbo to make it work
with my non-cape display?

[beagleboard] Powering using SYS_5V

2017-05-11 Thread PM
Hello,

I am trying to power my BBB from an external 12V source.

I convert it to 5V using D15V35F5S3 step down convertor from Pololu.

When I connect it to SYS_5V it works but I have to always hit the power
button before the lights go on.

Do you know any way to not to have to hit the POWER button ?

Thank you very much.

You could add a toggle switch between the power supply and the BBB, or
more simply just not power the BBB down. Leave it up.

You can't "sudo echo >"

sudo sh -C "echo 'BB-PWM1-00A0.dtbo' > /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots"

Hello,

Thanks for your reponse.

I meant that after the power is beeing supplied to the BBB. I have to hit
the POWER button in order to make it start.

I did not have to do this when it was powered from sector.

Re: [beagleboard] Powering using SYS_5V

2017-05-11 Thread Graham
You need to put an oscilloscope on the 5 Volt output from the Pololu.
There is a rise time specification on the start-up Voltage rise time.
I think it needs to reach 5.0 Volts in less than 50 milliseconds.
Read the System Reference Manual

The Voltage can not overshoot more than a few tenths of a Volt.
The operating Voltage should be 5.0 Volts plus or minus 0.25 Volts.

If it overshoots or undershoots above 5.5 or below 4.5 for even a
millisecond,
the PMIC will shut down.

A properly designed 12 Volt to 5 Volt converter will work fine, every time.

[beagleboard] USB power negotiation

2017-05-11 Thread gorogbalazs

Hello All,

could someone more experienced with USB help me please?
We would like to power a BeagleBone Black with the default Angstrom linux
image solely over USB. We did a measurement, showing that the BBB eats c.a.
150mA not doing anything, and 360mA with a benchmarking program running.
USB2.0 can provide us 500mA.
We fear, that when we connect our peripherals, the 500mA-s would not be
enough. Is there any way to use the device from a USB3.0 port (or USB3.0
power) and negotiate for more power, e.g. 6-700mA? We can only use a single
USB port, so power cables are not an option.

Thanks for the help in advance,
Balázs

[beagleboard] Re: BBGW Internet-over-USB connectivity problem

2017-05-11 Thread Evgeny Kirshin
All right, I got it solved today. For those who will have the same problem,
here is what helped me:

First of all, I booted from uSD with latest image taken from
here: https://beagleboard.org/latest-images (I used the first one, which is
at the moment "Jessie for BeagleBone via
microSD card").
Second, I had to re-install the RNDIS driver on Windows 8. I noticed that
sometimes it gets stuck (even on BBB that I used previously) - when pinging
8.8.8.8 (after adding the gateway to /sbin/route) it was getting stuck with
the line output "PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data." and timed
out after some time.
Uninstalling the RNDIS driver was also tricky. It looks like uninstalling
the four "Beaglebone Driver..." items from "Programs and Features" did not
clean uninstall the driver and I had the same settings of the RNDIS adapter
when I plugged back the BBGW (i.e. I saw the same name of the network
adapter as previously and my internet connection was already shared with
the adapter). When I uninstalled RNDIS driver from Device Manager, it
helped. The name of the RNDIS adapter changed and, I believe, other (hidden
?) settings got cleared too, which solved my connectivity issues.

I hope this helps other struggling people.

[beagleboard] I²C reads on broken out bus #1 always return 0

2017-05-11 Thread 'Torsten K.' via BeagleBoard

Hi,

two weeks ago I received my BeagleBone Blue.

So far, I've managed to get

  - an OrangeRX DSMX receiver
  - a GP-735T GPS receiver
  - a Servo
  - and a 2S LiPo Akku

going, more or less without any problems.

However, all the I²C devices I connected to the available I²C bus #1 so far
only work "one-way". I.e., I can send data to the devices and they do what
they are supposed to, but I can't seem to get any data from a device to the
BBBlue.

E.g., I've got a I²C DC motor controller (with more juice than the builtin
one).
I can set my motors spinning, braking, reversing, ... using this
controller, but I can't get any status information back from the device.

I already swapped all cables (and measured them) - they seem to be okay.

Can it have something to do with the I²C-settings in the dtb? How does
u-boot select the right dtb anyway?

Thanks in advance,
Torsten

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Flashing eMMC memory from SD card with Chipsee Debian Jessie

2017-05-11 Thread Robert Nelson
The Chipsee 7inch capes are fun as there is no eeprom (can bus is used
on those i2c pins)

Follow these instructions:

Step 1: Flash BBB without LCD plugged in:

Grab either image:

Jessie:
https://rcn-ee.net/rootfs/bb.org/testing/2017-05-07/lxqt-4gb/BBB-blank-debian-8.8-lxqt-4gb-armhf-2017-05-07-4gb.img.xz

Stretch:
https://rcn-ee.net/rootfs/bb.org/testing/2017-05-07/stretch-lxqt/BBB-blank-debian-stretch-lxqt-armhf-2017-05-07-4gb.img.xz

Use Etcher.io to write it to a microSD card:

https://etcher.io/

Stick the microSD into the BBB (without the LCD plugged in), hold down
the "boot" button, insert power, remove finger from the 'boot" button,
let it flash (cyclon led pattern), wait till the board power's down.

Step 2: Remove microSD, First Boot, update /boot/uEnv.txt

With the board booted:

Open /boot/uEnv.txt

There are two 7inch Chipsee Lcd's

BBB + 7 Chipsee with Cap touch:

dtb=am335x-boneblack-bbb-exp-c.dtb

BBB + 7 Chipsee with Res touch:

dtb=am335x-boneblack-bbb-exp-r.dtb

and we need to disable uboot_overlays (this lcd doesn't support that)..

So in /boot/uEnv.txt (if you have the chipsee 7inch lcd) you'll need
to make two changes:

dtb=am335x-boneblack-bbb-exp-c.dtb

and change:

enable_uboot_overlays=1

to:

#enable_uboot_overlays=1

Step 3: (internet connection required) update kernel

There's a known issue with the "r99" kernel installed by default with
this lcd (just fixed it yesterday) update to "r100" or just wait till
next Monday when new images are published..

cd /opt/scripts/tools/
git pull
sudo ./update_kernel.sh

you should see:

#-
#info: you are running: [4.4.62-ti-r99], latest is: [4.4.62-ti-r100] updating...

Step 4: Shutdown, plug in Chipsee LCD, (switch moved to eMMC) and apply power

Step 5: enjoy your lcd, lxqt will show up, touchscreen will track finger

Step 6: Profit

Regards,

[beagleboard] Re: I²C reads on broken out bus #1 always return 0

2017-05-11 Thread Graham
If you are successfully sending I2C commands, then everything is hooked up
correctly, and the device tree is properly configured.

I2C is a bi-directional bus. If it works in one direction, then it has to
work in the other direction down at the hardware level.

How are you "reading" the I2C devices?

What app or tool? or what program in what language?

So, you have to be doing something wrong. A beaglebone wont function unless
I2C is working. Show us what you're doing, that is not working. The
command, and the output. If you're using your own source, we need to see
that too. Keep in mind that I do also have hands on experience with writing
applications that use I2C in C, and most recent just a week ago. But no
personal hands on with the beaglebone blue. The hardware in this case
however should be exactly the same.

[beagleboard] image vmlinuz-4.9.25-ti-r32 may break networking

2017-05-11 Thread Mark Copper
Could be broken hardware as well. OTOH BBBW did work out of the box but
networking failed after kernel update while everything else seems OK.

Symptoms: Immediately after flashing image, ifconfig and ip show usb
interfaces but not wlan0--same as when booting from SD card. Later network
probe processes hang and do not return (ip, ifconfig, lshw for example, but
not lsusb). Nor can these processes be killed.

Would like to know if anyone else is seeing this. Would also be glad to
provide additional information. I also have additional BBBW cards so could
try to duplicate.

Hope I'm not too far off base. Thanks for reading.

[beagleboard] Where can I find BeagleBone Green source to change and compile device tree am335x-bonegreen.dts?

2017-05-11 Thread bruce web
Hi,

I am trying to modify BeagleBone Green device tree to support audio codec
tlv320aic3105 for the customised cape, where can I find the BBG kernel
source? I am not sure if I can use the device tree built from TI processor
SDK.

Regards,
Bruce

Re: [beagleboard] Dimensions of BB Blue

2017-05-11 Thread Clark Sann
That would be very helpful if I only had an altoids tin.

Anyone else have the actual dimensions...even roughly?

I'm making a prototype board tomorrow and need a rough dimension. I sure
haven't been able to find it anywhere and I've searched all over the github
project, the specs, etc.

Re: [beagleboard] Booting from chroot

2017-05-11 Thread William Hermans
No. You don't boot from a chroot, you simply pivot from one rootfs to
another. I suggest you go out and do some reading and experiment on your
own. Additionally, chroot does not imply QEMU either.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Flashing eMMC memory from SD card with Chipsee Debian Jessie

2017-05-11 Thread Radovan Chovan
Thank you very much for your time and detailed answer.
But as I wrote, I need "backup" SD card with my custom stuff which I want
to use for flashing eMMC in another BBBs.
I 've found script
/opt/scripts/tools/eMMC/beaglebone-black-make-microSD-flasher-from-eMMC.sh
Is this the only option for me?
