I absolutely support Dipankarda's views here about the "hasanta". Moving 
it to "\"  is an inconvenient way of writing conjuncts.


Secondly, about DS' query regarding (in)frequent usage of ZWJ:

Unicode rules prescribe the usage of ZWJ (and not ZWNJ) for writing 
ra-japhala.

Since ZWNJ is also used by Uniscribe's older versions perhaps the 
following scheme can be adopted to keep both on non-shift keys:

First up to clarify matters, this issue concerns the alt+hotkey 
combinations. the ctrl+key combinations as far as I am aware cannot be 
translated. atleast I have never come across it ever. Hence for saving a 
file: alt+f+s is different from ctrl+s.


Currently, I use a system with bengali locale and interface as my 
primary production system. The input method I use is IIIMF. This is an 
application specific input method switcher. Same goes for SCIM. i.e. 
these two do not change the keyboard for the entire system. Earlier I 
have used setxkbmap which was a system level input method switcher and 
looks like most people in the thread are familiar with this method.


What I have come across regarding alt+hotkeys during my regular work are 
as follows [along with details]:

#1. Dysfunctional

I will not call the hotkeys non-functional,  but dysfunctional. Reason 
being:


@ IIIMF and SCIM
  -> En shortcuts work as alt+en key even when the active keyboard is a 
bengali keyboard [ i use probhat]
  -> bn shortcuts like alt+bn key do not work even when the active 
keyboard is a bengali keyboard.

@ setxkbmap
  -> bn shortcuts work as alt+bn key or alt+shift+bn key [in case of a 
character like ফ] with an active bn keyboard.

  -> en shortcuts work as alt+key with an active en keyboard

additional info: ctrl+s types shortcuts [which cannot be translated] did 
not function with an active setxkbmap bn keyboard. but functioned with 
an active bn keyboard on IIIMF and SCIM.

#2. Inconsistent
===

Duplication of top-level menu hotkeys as well as submenu hot-key under 
the same top-level menu item. for e.g. in gnome-games mines বৈশিষ্ট্য -> 
পূর্ণপর্দা and বৈশিষ্ট্য -> পছন্দ both have hotkeys as alt+প.



#3 Partial Implementation


Now there are two offspins from this one.

@ gtk overrides [for gnome]:

this is specifically for the gnome desktop. as golum was kind of 
confused about it let me explain in detail. currently in gedit.po file 
Cut (_C) is translated as কাট করুন (_C), whereas in gtk+ file it is 
translated as কাট(_ট)। But when populating the menu items for gedit, in 
some cases instead of the translation being used in gedit.po file the 
one from gtk+.po file is being used.

compiled from the original .po file and the same thing looks as this

@ application related:

this is for applications that do not have a text editor on its primary 
interface. Again using the example for gnome-games mines [alternatively 
same game]. this application uses alt+bn key hotkeys.


** IIIMF and SCIM: bn keyboard for this particular application cannot be 
activated, because there is no text entry box on the primary interface. 
hence alt+bn hotkeys do not work. alt+en hotkey works. a text entry box 
appears only when the user is allowed to write in his/her name for the 
score.


** setxkbmap: alt+bn hotkey combination works on the main interface as 
setxkbmap sets the system level keyboard to bn.




The reasons for the above mentioned behaviour is unknown to me and I can 
only comment about them as observations from the perspective of a user. 
Whether geeky or not, one cannot assume the requirements of a user. 
sometime back while doing an installation on a test system i had to 
resort to the hotkeys due to a malfunctioning mouse. at that point of 
time the shortcuts on anaconda did not function as they were in english 
and the keyboard used during installation is en. and unlike the gedit 
solution I mentioned earlier, hacking on installers is not really an 
available option. This issue has been resolved and I mention this only 
to highlight the fact that requirements from users can be varied and at 
times maybe due to unexpected circumstances.


Secondly, the issue regarding consistency between KDE and Gnome. Barring 
contexts I guess issues for both the desktops ought to be dealt with 
separately. Yet, known issues in gnome can be used to reference any 
similar issues arising in KDE and vice versa. I guess kcontrol would be 
apt example in this case where multiple backend files are being used and 
consistency is a key element. Similar to the gedit+gtk scenario.


Given that we have come across multiple results, it might be a  good 
idea to go behind the scenes to figure out where exactly things are 
going wrong. Whether

Sorry can't understand, what options?  I use some KDE apps (e.g. Konqueror) with
bn interfaces.  I love to use their bn shortcuts.

usability and other areas of functionality.  Hence in case any such 
moves are made I'd request everyone to first chalk out the pros and 
cons. imho important policy decisions **if** at all put to vote should 
be restricted to core members and not to trolls and bots.

this is not abt amatuerish sentimental issues.

I presume if one needs to check the correct pronountiation of a bengali 
word (s)he would not check in an arabic dictionary. There is always a 
chance of incorrect representation in the dictionary if the authors have 
not correctly researched the words.

#1 was sent by me sometime in 2004. No answer till date. In the link #2 
jamil had specifically requested for everyone on a consensus on this 
issue. same for #3.The minutes of the ankur meeting had been posted 
about a month back and no comments have come in so far about any of the 
issues, barring one reply from jamil this morning.

update the GTK+ and gtk+-properties POs immediately.  But let the 
decision come first. 



As I have said in my last mail gtk+* files override some of the 
important menu items in Gnome appilcations e.g. file, new, cut, copy, 
paste etc. etc. which results in nearly 40% of the menu items picking up 
bn shortcuts from the gtk+* files, even though the shortcuts in that 
particular application use english shortcuts. in the case of gtk+* 
files..shortcut keys are not the only issue. even the menu entries get 
overridden.



It would be quite confusing to the users if GNOME uses en shortcuts and
KDE uses bn.
 

agreed. and even more confusing if half of the interface of a single 
application in either of the two desktop interfaces do not match. 
generally it is considered that languages using non-latin scripts should 
stick to the original english shortcuts for the sake of consistency. 
Especially languages which use half-form conjuncts. A nice link for

@ Availability of Translators
@ Tracking of Translation over Releases and Projects

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

@ Translator Manager to keep track of the work of the translators as 
well as inform them when deadlines are nearing [SDG to develop this]


-Till the development of the Translation Manager a 
spreadsheet can be used to maintain records.


@ Hand over jobs if translators are unable to allocate time due to other 
priorities and commitments


ISSUE #2

@ Inconsistent Shortcuts and Translations of Common Items

SUGGESTED SOLUTION

@ Use the original hotkey english value to maintain consistency and 
functionality


@ Common widgets like OK/Cancel Buttons, Top level menu items etc. to be 
standardised [Each Translator can send in the terms that they use during 
translations and common values can be picked up from them and posted up 
on the website]



OTHER ISSUES AND SUGGESTIONS:

@ Break up point of contacts in projects according to work area: eg. 
translation, bug fixing, interaction with upstream etc.


@ OpenOffice Language Pack in Fedora [Jamil]

@ Write directly to Font Developers to get details about the various 
available fonts [Soumyadip]


@ Updation of Free Bangla Project website [ Jamil to follow up with 
Salauddin]

well.. what can i say but that its quite a co-incidence that i had 
downloaded the gnome-utils file this morning with the intent of working 
on it sometime in the afternoon. :)


I would surely get on with the rest of it as well, since the ball has 
started rolling... tho there is one thing that I'd like to mention 
[again]... I am going to use english shortcuts for the gnome files for 
the very simple reason that as an end-user of the bengali gnome 
interface i find it very difficult to use the applications with their 
dysfunctional shortcuts. Thats one of the reasons why i was going to 
update the gnome-utils file... coz i have using the  "file search..." 
box since morning and needs lotsa changes.


also mak and samia.. great efforts... glad to have you guys on board.

jamil, since we are working on the gnome files please do maintain 
backups of the older files in case the original translators do not 
respond or prefer not to work on them at present.
