Re: Breeding
Sorry, this last paragragh was cut-off: re: In breeding, line breeding, and out crossing... All in all, each has their place and the breed probably benefits most from having the use of all three...in appropriate measure. I wouldn't want to see all litters in-bred or tightly line-bred...but I'm not sure I'd like to see all Bernese litters out-crosses either, especially when working with the very limited information we have available today. Re: Backtalk
I am not that experienced so I am sure other people will have more suggestions but Smokey is a backtalker. I mean he in general is a talker and when we first started training he was quite upset at the idea he had to listen to me. Basically what the trainer told me is the following: 1. He must always obey backtalk or not. So if you give him a command and he wants to talk back, he needs to do the command too! 2. If he doesn't get into his space. Move towards the dog, and enforce your command and your leadership role 3. There is no reward for backtalk but lots of reward for quiet obedience. So, if your pup obeys with a lot of noise, a gentle good dog is in order. But if you dog obeys quietly, praise as if he just invented the theory of relativity. And some smelly treats always help. I have found that Smokey largely grew out of this as I kept up on obedience. The basic trick is just to get him to realize you are in charge and his best bet is to listen to what you have to say quietly. But, Smokey still has some talk, especially when it involves walks or sitting while I am eating dinner. Still vast improvements. I hope that this helps. Radha __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Fun Survey
Have fun! 1 --- Do you live in c) country d) on Planet Berner Hmmm... Family and boyfriend would say D, but we live in a house on the outskirts of a small village (not quite country enough, but getting there). 2 --- Where does your dog spend the night? Cessi - beside the bed on the floor (comes up for cuddles first, then gets off and spends the night there) Tucker - usually on the floor in the bathroom, sometimes at the front door 3 --- What is your dog's favorite toy? Cessi - bones and stuffed babies Tucker - bones and the cats - the ultimate squeaky toys! 4 --- Your dog's most remarkable feature is (fill in the blank) (do I have to pick just one???) Cessi - her intuitiveness blows me away; also the power behind her paws, tail and nose nudges, the way she throws herself down for belly rubs, and the way she crosses her pretty white paws like the little lady she is Tucker - vocal ability(!); also this big rough dog gives the most incredibly gentle nose nibbles and ear nibbles; silky super soft ears, and the ability to sleep wrapped at a 90 degree angle around a corner 5 --- You bought a new car for your dog(s) Didn't have to - had the SUV (now on #3). Chose my house based on how it would suit living with berners (before I even had one)- does that count? 6 --- Your dog participates in (feel free to list any titles your dog has won) a) conformation - Cessi Ch, Tucker - we'll see b) obedience trials - coming soon for Cessi c) drafting trials - working on it g) training classes - oh yes h) digging to China - no, thank goodness 7 --- The naughtiest thing that your dog has done is. Cessi is such a good girl... the thing that comes to mind most readily was when she ate a half pound of butter one afternoon while I was away, and then, well, it came out the other end, rather explosively. I've never seen poop halfway up the walls before or since. grin Tucker, hmmm, let's see - there was my favourite black sandals that he ate the cushioning out of, the time he ate 1/2 a wild bunny (this counts as one of Cessi's naughty things too as she killed the thing) and then regurgitated it on the carpet in the living room... None of these are really *naughty* things - just dogs being dogs. Oh, and there was the time Tucker walked up to Adam as he was getting dressed one morning and grabbed his, um, privates, between his teeth. Luckily he didn't bite down! Cessi also used to square her dad regularly with her front paw by sitting up like a bear and throwing one into his groin. Jen Cessi and Tucker

RE: Berners their special cars
So now the world knows that Santa is not as devoted to his adoring mother as she would have everyone believe. (Sniff!) I am currently trying to work out just how to successfully negotiate with my father for the provision of one dark green Range Rover, fully equipped with a hunky (and very strong) chauffeur to enable me to travel in it with Santa. I'm not holding out much hope here but I promised Santa I would try. (The chauffeur would be vital, as I'm not convinced of Santa's ability to reach the pedals, even if he thinks he can drive.) Re: Stevie's Progress! (Happy News!!)
I am so delighted to hear this!!! sara steele - Original Message - From: Karen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Berner List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 4:30 PM Subject: Stevie's Progress! (Happy News!!) Dear List, I just had to write and let you all know that I have been steadily washing up tons and tons of very muddy paw prints off of my kitchen floor and back porch floor. Stevie has been going outside (on leash of course, and certainly not without me!!) and doing alot of walking. He has gained so much confidence in the last week it is uncanny. A Guardian Angel from across the pond mercifully sent us some boots with fabulous traction, and almost immediately he started to progress. There is still a significant amount of ice and snow around and I really believe that this was a big part of Stevie's problem. He did not feel safe and was unsure of his footing. These boots, which are the same kind that Search and Rescue dogs use whilst going through debris and rubble, were a God send and we are so grateful to my dear friend Cecilia Staal. (Love you Cecilia, but you knew that already!!) We started out slowly at first and it did take a few tries to get Stevie used to the boots, but after much praise and lots of treats, he settled into them like they had been always on his feet. The last couple of days has been warmer and the snow and ice are finally beginning to melt. We have been out so much for little walks, Stevie tires very easily and pants a tremendous amount but we will build that up soon I am sure. Now this is for my dear friend down south, Stevie actually trotted and ran a few steps today after a large bird that was in his back yard!! I was so excited that I tripped and fell into a very wet and muddy spot, I was laughing and crying at the same time. Stevie just looked at me curiously, because I am sure after all this drama and emotion lately, he has come to the conclusion that his Mum is just a few sandwiches short of a picnic!! I am so happy and grateful and truly feel now that Stevie will be ok. We saw his neurologist last Wednesday and we don't have to go back unless there are problems. He is very pleased with his remarkable progress and he does not feel that there is any permanent neurological or mental deficits. He has gained almost all the weight that he lost except for approx. 4 pounds. The vets are equally as amazed as I am and said that Stevie definitely had an angel with him, back that cold, grey day in January. I am so proud of Stevie and my heart is just so full, I could just burst. Even though my own personal life is still somewhat of a mess, these milestones that we make with my beloved boy seem to make everything alright and it definitely gives me purpose. I will never complain about the black tumbleweeds of berner hair that I find under and in furniture, I gladly and lovingly wash up the mud and crud and corruption that this time of year brings when you have a gentle giant who is now slowly becoming more and more active outside I scrub and clean that floor actually with a big grin on my face, can you imagine!! Thank you all so much for the continued love and support, it is so important to us and we appreciate it deeply. Love from Karen and Stevie NB, Canada
Re: Oh where, oh where.......
Elisabeththose beautiful berners were probably just out of view behind and around all those hills and mountains :) I suggest you go back and visit the lovely little mountain villages of Murren and Gimmelwald. Five years ago I was there and in the first hour in the country I saw Berners. Coming into Bern I saw a berner out in a field and then as I pulled up to a stoplight in Bern a car pulled up along side in the other lane and when I glanced over there was a Berner in the car looking at me. Then somewhere between Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen Valley I watched as a doorman for a restaurant held open the door for a couple and their Berner to enter the restaurant. And we no sooner stepped off the little funicular that took us to the town of Murren high up an alp (no cars there) and there was a gentleman out for an evening stroll with his Berner. All of this my first day in Switzerland. Sorry, not trying to make you feel bad. Thanks for bringing back memories of that magical place. Cindy Reid have all the Berners gone, oh where, oh where can they be? That's the question I have after having visited my home country of Switzerland once again and did not see a single Berner any where. We were only out in the country sites, no cities. We hiked all over, but never saw a Berner at any of the farmer houses we passed or out on the pastures. The same as my past 2 visits, NO BERNERS. Saw all the in dogs like Goldens, Retrievers, Akitas, etc., anything but a Berner. Can anyone on the L in Switzerland explain this. Elisabeth, Digby (all my ancestors are Swiss) and Donzi (I doubt I have a drop of Swiss in me)
RE: Cure for Backtalk
Jenn: The cure for back taught is not rewarding it. It is often helpful to have a friend watch what YOU do when he barks. You may be unknowingly be encouraging him to bark back (e.g., by looking at him, touching him, giving him a command to stop in a tentative way, or using some form of body language that he finds encouraging or pleasant). An independent observer can often pick that up quicker than you or your family can. If you don't have a friend, hire a dog behaviorist to come out and observe. I have a personal story where we used this observational technique. My husband was clearly encouraging certain bad behaviors from one of our dogs (i.e., the dog was jumping up on him when he came home from work). He insisted that he was not doing anything to encourage this behavior -- fortunately, I was able to capture him on video tape and he realized that indeed he was encouraging the behavior (touching/petting the dog as he tentatively said no jump). He started carrying a treat in his pocket and upon entry, he gave a firm command to sit, when the dog sat, she got the treat. The jumping was gradually extinguished over time. This doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen. Make sure that all the family members expect the same out of the dog and behave consistently toward the dog when he is barking. By the way, does the dog bark back at everyone in the family or only you? Knowing this could also give you a clue on how to deal with it. If this does not work, the citronella collars are also useful. Glad you are enjoying your Berner. Nancy Melone Mars, PA Please someone save me and tell me what is the cure for talking back. Im used to it from the humans, just wanted my puppy to be different. I have no clue what to do on this one. HELP! Jenn and Charlie Gill, MA -

Sir turns six!
Everyone, This is my yearly HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my boy and to the littermates that we know the whereabouts of. For those of you new to this story, Sirius (Sir) was purchased from an ad newspaper 6 years ago. Every year , I put out another call to anyone who may have purchased a puppy from this litter. By word of mouth and shear cussidness, I have managed to find out the whereabouts of four of the nine. They were born on March 27th in Olympia. Washington to Pollux and Celeste, owned by Ed and Carman Taylor(a military family). After a second litter was produced (one of which died at age two of bone cancer) the family moved, leaving no address for any of the owners. So if you have a dog purchased around this time, in this place, PLEASE contact me! And to Sir's littermates Lacey, Ben(re-homed once to his forever home), Angel(re-homed twice to her forever home) and Lila, Happy Birthday to YOUUU! from Sir. We were at the Kitsap Peninsula Dog Show(in Bremerton, Washington) this weekend at the Education booth for the Bernese Mtn. Dog Club of Greater Seattle. Sir as usual was a big hit and such a gentleman! Best wishes and MANY MORE HAPPY BIRTHDAYS to Sir's family, Happy Birthday to my baby boy, Lynne and the guys Keyport, Washington

The Unicorn Factor.....
Hey, Mary Kay My Husband I had a similar experiance at one of the local lakes. You would have thought we had brought a Unicorn out for a walk. We got about 25 yards from the car and 25 yards back an hour later. We never got our walk in. Zoe was on her best behavior and loved the attention. It is magical. Hello My name is Mary Kay and I have been lurking for some time now, but I felt I had to share my experience! I have a five month old berner girl that is everything I had ever hoped for. So in keeping with the plans I made for this puppy (confirmation, obedience, carting and therapy work) we were on our way to puppy class. On the way I realized that the slip lead I had been working her on did not meet the requirments for class. No problem, petsmart is on the way! I had planned a quick in and out and on to class. Boy was I wrong! I of course had to take Pyper in to look around and properly fit the collar. From the time we walked into the store we were mobbed! I have had her at puppy matches, the training club and petsmart before, but this was something else all together! We could not take more than 3 steps at a time! Pyper of course took all the attention as her due and hammed it up for any one who even cast a glance in her direction. One little girl just followed her around. As her parents were leaving, they mentioned that the she was generally afraid of dogs and had never seen her so taken, especially by a big dog (about 50lbs). Needless to say it was half an hour before we were back on the road! So much for a quick trip! It made me feel so good to see this silly puppy make everyone smile with a single look. Even at class other owners were paying more attention to my dog than their own! I have not always been the most outgoing person in the world, but now theres no other option! It took me about 5 years from the time I decided on the breed until I brought this bundle of joy home, so I, of course, think she is very special, but what is it about this breed that brings people out of their own worlds and shells? Fw: Berner survey
Woops - just sent in html vs pt by mistake - so sorry, Pat. Trying again. Here are my responses to the survey: 1 --- Do you live in I live in the burbs (but close to the city, with country woods behind us) (btw - I tried to put the whole word for this response here instead of just saying the burbs - and my email was rejected because that word is a command word - did anyone else have this problem?) 2 --- Where does your dog spend the night? He used to always sleep on the cold tile in the bathroom, with his head resting part way into the hall, so he could see all of our bedroom doors. Lately, he varies between that spot, my son's bedroom right beside his bed (this has only been since we rearranged my son's furniture so there's a good spot beside the bed with a view of the hallway), and our bedroom on the wood floor (again with a view of the hallway). 3 --- What is your dog's favorite toy? He has SOOO many toys and loves them all, mostly those with squeakers, but I'd have to say his favorite is one he's worn through three versions of - a large stuffed jack with squeakers in each spike or leg of it. He likes to lick and chew it. We get a new one whenever he rips through getting close to getting the squeaker out. 4 --- Your dog's most remarkable feature is (fill in the blank) How happy he makes me... and His amazing consistency at meeting me at the door with a toy in his mouth - and his great joy at just seeing me, which is equal to mine at seeing him. It's so nice to come to him. His submission to my sister's 11 year old female Jack Russell Terrier - and apparent belief that she's bigger than him. His belief that EVERYONE he meets loves him - although it is mostly true. 5 --- You bought a new car for your dog(s) No - had an SUV AND a four-door pickup with full size backseat. 6 --- Your dog participates in (feel free to list any titles your dog has won) Kids soccer games (not by invitation, but by accident) His greatest accomplishment was PASSING his beginning obedience class without being the worst behaved dog in the class. (with a reluctant ok by his teacher that he could move up to the next class level). 7 --- The naughtiest thing that your dog has done is. Eating a (expensive, treasured) American Girl doll - Felicity, for those who know of these dolls. Cost me $80 at a doll hospital due to my daughter's insistence that buying a new one wasn't the same. Help (ASAP)
Smokey at a lightbulb. It was on the counter and he just ate it when I went downstairs to do laundry. I called the vet's office but they are gone for the night. He seems fine right now but should I take him to the emergency room? Should I give him something to eat? Should I make him throw up--I worry about the glass. Please help. Radha __ Do you Yahoo!? We're Okay
THANK YOU!!! This is just wonderful. All of the advise about cotton balls was right on the ball. After writing the list, the answering service at my vet's had a vet call me and I brought Smokey in. After an X-ray and some examination it turns out that smokey swallowed the bulb whole!!! That's right--it is one of the those small vanity mirror bulbs and he just swallowed it in tact (you can actually see it on the X-Ray-- I have saved it and when I make a webpage I am going to scan it in!). Anyway, long story short, the vet said to give him soft foods and cotton balls soaked in cream--just in case there are a few splinters. For future reference to anyone else, the vet also said that it is very, very important to go in right away if a dog swallows glass. The reason is the shards can cause internal bleeding and serious damage to the stomach and esophogus. Cotton balls soaked in cream or milk as well as soft, solid foods (like soaked bread) can stave off the impact and should be given immediately (which I did based on the list advise). But if the bulb is only half crunched out surgery may be necesarry as the pieces will be too large to pass without injury. If the bulb is mostly intact or thoroughly crunched up it can be passed but the dog must be watched. This was quite the heart attack. I never imagined a dog would eat a lightbulb!! Why? Well thank goodness it was whole so that surgery wasn't necessary. Smokey is uncomfortable (but more from eating the cotton it seems than from the bulb). And it seems like everything will be okay but I am to watch his stools for the next few days and then take him back. If it doesn't pass, then we need surgery to remove it but it looks to be a reasonable size and shape that it will pass (what luck he chose that lightbulb to eat and not a standard 60W bell-shaped bulb). From the bottom of my heart thank you to everyone who responded to me. It really made a big difference both to know what to do, to hear that this has happened before, and to just keep me from panicking while I waited for the vet to call back!! Have enjoyed reading the survey results. It seems to me that more that a goodly bunch of us Berner folk are ending beginning each day with a Berner hopping into bed with us for some cuddles. This is one of the bestest parts of our day with the Berners... and knowing so many of us -each in our own space time- are sharing such a sweet moment is warming to the heart.
