Karen and Stevie
Dear List, Well I just don't know when or if our luck will every change. Received a call tonight at 10:30 p.m. to say that the house that my son and his dad just moved into this weekend was on fire and no one could find my son. My ex-husband is in another province, (he is a truck driver), I was panicked. Of course, I had already felt like I had abandoned my son by moving Stevie and I into our own apartment, but only because my son Trevor did not want to leave the community that he has known for the last 15 years. But now that I am living in the city and away from our small village I was absolutely hysterical to think that something horrible was happening and I was not there. I did finally locate Trevor by his cell phone and he was at a neighbors house. I immediately took off to go to Trevor. By the time I arrived poor Trevor was pretty much in shock, burns to his right arm and almost no hair left on the side of his head and the rest singed. He had tried to get back into the house to save wee George, (Stevie's faithful kitty). Trevor was supposed to bring him into Stevie and I tomorrow. The house is now completely gone and poor George as well. I am just devastated once again. Of course, I am thankful that my Trevor is ok, but they have lost absolutely everything. They were supposed to go and have the content insurance put on when my ex came back which would have been tomorrow also. After our move, and the closing of our house last Friday, there was no insurance on any of their things, and of course many of their "things" were also my "things". Poor Trevor has the clothes on his back and that is it. I know that this is not Berner related, but once again, I needed to pour my bleeding heart out to someone. I realize that I should indeed be thankful, but it is getting harder and harder all the time. It just feels like you get beaten down and you are never sure if you can get back up again. And of course, I am just devastated to think that little George has perished. Poor Stevie will definitely miss him as will I. Please if you can or will, say a little prayer for my family and wee George, once again. I am very heavy hearted. I will be hugging my big Stevie boy very hard tonight, I am the one needing him to comfort me at this point. Love to you and yours. Karen and Stevie NB, Canada

Phew!!!!! Think that's the Updates Updated
Evening All, (And "No!" I do not care what you try to bribe me with, I am not telling you which major character gets bumped off in the latest Harry Potter!!! Boo, Hoo!!!) Think I am finally up to date with my Updates! What did I do tonight? Another fun picture on the Humour Page (Thanks Herb) which I have now divided into three pages so the new stuff should come up a lot quicker, was getting enormous! Two more new pages on the Friends Gallery of Zoe, Tucker and Hannah Burnell, and also Cooper Gandolfini getting the better of his tough guy dad.(Thanks Chris and Herb) An interesting article on Immune System Support (Thanks Karen C and Willem) Special previews of Willem's latest paintings for the next Fundraiser, details TBA (Thanks Willem! Joye, Pat, Karen P??) A new sad poem which I have added to the bottom of the HistioRollCall Page under the Pet Loss Grief Support Rainbow banner.(Thanks Willem and Author Unknown! ) Sadly and belatedly, a tribute page to Shih Tzu, Muffy Lynn, who died in January after an almost four year fight against Lymphoma. It was with great sadness I moved Muffy's page over from the Friends' Gallery, she has been there since I first started my Site. Nikki, her owner, and I were among the very first members of EndlessLove, the support group for owners of pets with cancer. Could I ask you all to do something very special for Nikki? A photograph of Muffy has been submitted to the July Poster Contest for US Shih Tzu Rescue. Com. If everyone gives a click and votes for her, she will win, Angel Paws down! And Nikki would be overjoyed! It will mark the four years since her diagnosis and the start of her chemo treatment. Details of what to do are on her Tribute Page. And yes, Hugh, have added in the link to your page on the Westchester Berner Walk at the bottom of my page!! Must confess, I did rather burn the Midnight Oil last night.! ZZZ!!! Apologies to anyone who has sent me pics and they are not included on these Updates. My Inbox is now clear, so anyone missing out, they were lost in my recent computer crash! I know Karen (Conors) sent me a gorgeous one taken with Angel and Amika. So please resend!! Now, all I have to do is scan is some rather wonderful photos of a recent visit from Barney's ex-owner, Cassie! And for once I get to be in the photos too with My Gang!!! But, not tonight! It's five to midnight here UK and I am definitely off to bed very soon! All Love, Jean, Sunny, Sim, Barney and the Longlease Gang http://bernese.biz
Re: Migrating Chip
Mary Ann, When I got my BARC baby, Star, the chip had already migrated down her side (towards her butt).I was told not to worry about it that the dogs are scanned with the chip migrating in mind. About once a year I ask my Vet. clinic to scan for the chip. I do this for two reasons First to be sure that it is still readable and second that it is findable. I will be interested in hearing what others have to say about your question though. Marilynn & Star Minneapolis, MN
Migrating Chip
I recently discovered something under the skin down on Halo's shoulder, and it turns out it is her microchip. It has migrated down about 5 inches from where it was inserted at eight weeks -- she is now eight months old. If she were lost, it is not likely they would scan down towards her elbow to find it so she now has two chips -- one where it should be and one that is apparently migrating south for the summer. Does anyone have any experience with migrating chips? Should it be removed? Should I be concerned about it? Thanks, Mary-Ann Bowman

Happy Birthday Boris!
My Big Bouncing Berner Boy, Boris (how's that for alliteration!) is 5 years old today! Woo Hoo! Extra cheese for Boris today. No long walks, it's just too hot. 33C again today. Phew! Hoses and the wading pool, I think! Funny story: yesterday morning, Boris was entered in his first agility fun match. We entered the ring, Boris raring to go. Bell rings - ready! Off he gallops round the ring, out the ring, goes to visit a nearby tent, back in the ring and out the other side without taking a single obstacle! I politely bow out and go and retrieve my dog who is happily prancing round in a neighbouring field. On returning, I was chatting to one of the other competitors who was admiring my beautiful dog and heaping praise on his doggish good looks. He was about to console me over Boris's performance in the ring by saying, "oh, he's still young, he's be fine when he matures a bit". Then he asked "how old is he?" 5 tomorrow, I reply. "ah" he says. Here's to Boris, the eternal puppy. Happy Birthday my big daft dog! Wendy and the Pointy Pests Boris Beard Ottawa, Canada http://members.rogers.com/bernerboris/bernerbooks.html

We had a wonderful morning- meeting lots of new two and four legged friends; sharing Swiss chocolate, swiss cheese, dog treats, beautiful views of the majestic Hudson River and Rockefeller State Park. The rain held off until the last dogs and their people returned to the meeting area. We were thrilled to meet all of you intrepid walkers and hope to see more of you next year. A special thanks to Linda Seaver and Belline for their hard work and friendship.
Re: warm weather behavior
Terry -- In warm weather, our dogs eat much less than in cooler weather. Maybe because they are less active and need less energy? Anyway it is normal as far as I can tell. This has been going on with our dogs for years, and they are quite healthy & happy otherwise. On walks, we have had our dogs lay down when they are very warm. Since we walk them a lot off-leash, they also will seek out shade when they are overheated. They rest, and then continue. If she is hot, let her cool off before asking her to continue the walk. If she is panting a lot, dripping saliva, her undersides feel quite warm and the bottoms of her feet are wet (that is where dogs "sweat"), she is probably too hot for the walk. If she is just being stubborn, she needs incentive to do what you want her to do. Bring really yummy treats with you initially to bribe her with. She needs to know that it is better to go with you than to rebel :-) We do not walk our dogs in the heat of the day - only in the morning or evening when it is cooler. Some days are just too warm to take the dogs out, so we go without them. Our dogs do have full access to the house AND fenced back yard so they can pick where they prefer to be - in warm weather they pick the linoleum floor in the lower level. One of our dogs licks her paws more in warm weather - I do not know why. Sounds like your girl likes the salty taste of those items ;-) Make sure your girl gets plenty of water to drink, has a cool place to be when it's warm, and doesn't have to be exercising in the heat. If you do not show her, you might look into trimming her undersides and keeping her undercoat brushed out, so she has less coat to carry around and better exposure to cool surfaces when she lies down. I don't know where you live, but much of our US climate is warmer than what our poor dogs can handle with the thick coats we breed into them. It takes some creative maintenance to make it as comfortable as possible for our furry friends in warm weather. You might also want to look into the misters that show people use on their crates tp keep their dogs cool. Someone else on the List can probably tell you where to find them. Then use it near where your girl likes to rest during warm weather. Is this natural or might there be a problem with her stomach? She had diahrria before so we switched to to straight dog food and a little cheese. That seems to have settled the diahrria problem. Also with the warmer weather she seems to be developing other habits, laying down on even short walks (unless, of course she sees another dog) then she has all the energy in the world. We have tried most of the collars and harnesses but she can be very stubborn and doesn't seem to address the stubborness issue. Terry Bering
