Cathee Arthur's puppies
I was contacted earlier today by someone asking if my sister, Cathee Arthur, had a litter of puppies. This person had been told same by someone else, who was absolutely positive Cathee had puppies. For those of you in Southern California who may have heard this, I just want to stop the rumor and say that Cathee has NO puppies. No puppies have been born, no bitch has been bred and no breedings are currently planned. She did, however, recently welcome a lovely new Holsteiner/Hanovarian filly, who was born a couple weeks ago. Perhaps someone got their canine v. equine births confused! :-) Karyn Beyer Mt. Shasta, CA [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Do Berners ever die of old age?
My Cricket was put down on December 29. She was 11.4 years old. She had been a bit slower in her old age, but was just fine until about 48 hours before I put her down. She failed quickly, for no discernible reason. I had a whole battery of tests done on her which showed nothing conclusive as being the problem. Cricket was ALWAYS a voracious eater, and I always said, somewhat jokingly, that the day she stops eating is the day I put her down. Turns out, that was exactly the case. I did not do a necropsy on her. Why? Cricket had a few homes before she made it to me, and I had no relationship with either her original breeder or the breeder who placed her with me. She was never bred, and I have no knowledge of any of her close mates being bred. At her age, it did not matter so much to me WHY she died; I know I was blessed to have her live as long as she did! Spencer died on March 12, 2 months shy of his 9th birthday. He had been diagnosed with Fibrosarcoma at the age of 3. Although his original prognosis was not good, he lived a happy, healthy life until that last month. Barium tests showed massive cancer in his stomach. Since the Fibro had originally been found in his abdomen, I went on the assumption that Fibro is what killed him. I did not do a necropsy on Spencer because (a) we knew it was cancer, just no the specific kind; (b) he had a history of cancer in that region that had previously been identified; and (c) the breeder had never expressed in interest in the last 5 years of his progress, and while she continues to breed, we are not on speaking terms. She reads the L so she can get the info here if it matters; and she certainly has the option to contact me if she is bothering to keep records. My family's first berner lived to nearly 12. Although we knew he had liver cancer, it was his heart giving out that finally killed him. Again, no necropsy. We had been monitoring his health, and knew it was simply a matter of time. Spencer's packing up for the bridge
Diagnostic tests yesterday confirmed that Spencer has stomach cancer. This may be a recurrence of the fibrosarcoma which has been in remission for so many years. About 1/4 to 1/3 of his stomach is non-functional, and little is passing through (which explains last month's blockage and the continued vomiting). He is home with me now, and I shall spend today with him and say goodbye. He'll be euthanized on Wednesday afternoon. Re: Where did you get your dog?
I have to admit that I find this thread potentially fraught with problems. While I am happy for all of you that were fortunate enough to get dogs from breeders that are conscientious and involved, not all of us have been that fortunate. In fact, some of us have had very different experiences with certain breeders. All relationships - person to person, breeder to buyer, trainer to trainee, stranger to stranger, family members - are different. You may think someone is just fabulous and the best person; I might disagree with that. Its human nature. We aren't all going to get along, but I hope we all do our best. To that end, I won't discuss my dogs' breeders, as I having nothing nice to say about one of them, and, I am certain, she has nothing nice to say about me. Hence, my feelings that this is a problematic thread that could easily turn unpleasant. Karyn Beyer Mt. Shasta, CA [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Specialty draft judge
Please be advised that we have had a change in judges for the Tuesday draft test at this year's Specialty. Val Horney was originally scheduled to judge. However, Val was recently appointed to the BMDCA Board and will be attending the Board meeting on Tuesday. Eden Jonas has graciously accepted our invitation to replace her as Tuesday's judge. Therefore, the judges for that test will be Paul Emerson and Eden Jonas. Please contact me if you have any questions. Karyn Beyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003 Specialty Draft Chair

The histio roll call is depressing. :-( My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a dog to any form of cancer. Its always a heartbreak. I hope the roll call helps get the word out and makes people realize how important it is to support our health studies and research efforts! I thought we could do another roll call to celebrate life as well as loss. Someone recently asked about how long berners lived. How many listers have dogs over 10? I'll start, and I hope to see many names added! Mi-ja's Solo Singer NDD, BNDD, CGC aka Cricket 9/4/01 (10 yrs., 2 mos.) Duh!!! Since I mentioned dogs over 10, that number was sticking in my head. Math not being my strong suit, I totally blew my own girl's age. It should read: Mi-ja's Solo Singer NDD, BNDD, CGC aka Cricket 9/4/01 (11 yrs., 2 mos.) Thanks, Pat for pointing out my error! Karyn, Cricket Spencer (who is still 8.5, no matter how you do the math)

I am keeping a list of all our seniors as the info is posted to the list. If you wouldn't mind, please copy me on your post ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) so I don't miss anyone. I'll post an updated list after Thanksgiving. Can't wait to see who our most senior of seniors is! So far, the oldest is Haley at 11 yrs., 5 mos. (At least we think its Haley, assuming she was born in 91 and not 01 - glad I'm not the only one with math problems! :-) Karyn Beyer [EMAIL PROTECTED]
