Help from Canada?
I'm hoping someone in the vast Berner network might be able to help locate an unknown Canadian breeder. How's that for an opening? A family who bought a puppy from me five years ago recently moved to Hurricane, W.Va.: not a Berner hot spot. But about three months ago their vet saw a Berner along the road and picked it up, thinking it was their Winston. They found the owner, but she had recently placed the dog with a relative as she was having personal problems and felt she was unable to care for the dog. The relative was keeping the dog chained in the yard with very little human contact or care. So Lisa, my puppy's owner, offered to take the dog in. She has had her since then, and says that after working on socializing, she is an absolutely wonderful dog, and their whole family has fallen in love with her. They would like to keep her, but the actual owner, the woman with personal problems, will not relinquish ownership. She calls periodically to say her problems are straightening out and she wants the dog back, then several weeks will go by until she contacts them again (Lisa suspects that alcoholism is part of the problem). So what we are hoping is that someone out there might know who bred this dog, and if we can find the breeder, maybe they can persuade the owner to turn her over to this loving family. All she knows is that she was born in Jan. 1999, that the breeder lived in Ontario, Canada, and that this was her first litter. The dog's name is Cassidy, and she has not been spayed. Lisa said she is a beautiful medium-sized female with a particularly smooth and lustrous coat. So if ANYONE out there has any idea who might have bred this litter, or sold a puppy to someone in West Virginia, any help would be greatly appreciated. Joanne Prellberg Polaris Bernese Mtn. Re: Migrating chip
Out of curiosity, what kind of chip was it? We have had several in our hospital that have migrated - they have all been AVID chips. I don't think we're unique in our scanning method - we start at the shoulder blades and if we don't find one , we go all the way down the dog. We found one AVID chip in a pastern, and one by the sternum. Have never found a Home Again chip that migrated, but I do know of one we put in that was irritated by the dog's draft harness and created an abcess. We no longer use or recommend the AVID chips, though I have been told they now have an anti-migrating feature like Home Again. Joanne Prellberg Polaris Bernese Mtn. Dogs Scottsdale, AZ
Re: OFA heart
In a message dated 6/18/03 10:05:06 PM US Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Only a certified cardiologist can perform the OFA Heart Test and yes it is more certainly worth it!! Actually, the submission form from OFA states that a cardiologist, or a vet with specialized cardiac training should do the test. However, they will accept them even when done by general practitioners - I know of a number of cases where it was done by regular vets, including by my own boss - so I take the OFA heart cert. with a grain of salt. I think it's worth doing, but without more knowledge of who did the exam, I wouldn't take it as definitive proof of a clean cardiac bill of health. Joanne Prellberg Polaris Bernese Mtn. Re: Dogs call names
I started a list of potential dog names (both registered call names) when I was about 14 (this helps explain why I didn't date a lot as a teenager). Still have some good ones on there, waiting for the right dog! In my 30's, used to joke with my then-husband that when I turned 40 I was going to look like Christie Brinkley. Alas, something went awry and that didn't happen, but since my 40th birthday present to myself was a lovely puppy imported from Switzerland, she had to be called Brinkley (Ch. Zenith v Bernetta). Earlier dogs included Labrador Fenway (Polaris Green Monster CDX). Then-hubby, who was not a Red Sox fan, but was a Cardinal's fan, wanted the next dog named for his team. Wanted to call her Busch, after their stadium, but I refused. So Ch. DeerPark Double Play, CD, became Scarlet...not for the team's colors, but because the owner of the team had an illegitimate daughter named Scarlett. I was originally to have gotten a dog from a C litter, and her registered name would have been DeerPark Cardinal Sin. (It would have been so good!) Scarlet's son, Shiva, was named by the vet tech who spent 30 minutes reviving him after being born 7 days premature. She said Shiva was the Egyptian god of energy. Come to find out he was also a Hindu god of destruction. He was my lesson that they always live up to their names! Thus my next boy, who came along at a very difficult time in my life, was Better, as in life has to get better. Ch. Edelweiss Beacon v Polaris was my heart and soul until succumbing to histio on Dec. 4 at 9 1/2. He was definitely the best named dog I ever had. Joanne Prellberg Polaris Bernese Mtn.
