Berner-Garde Fundraiser is over - BUT - you can still send a check...

2003-09-01 Thread Dr. William B. Neff
The Berner-Garde Fundraiser is officially over - BUT you can still send a
check to me.

Okay - all of you procrastinators out there, you can now think about going
to look at the Berner-Garde Fundraiser Website and can now enter the Name
the Costco Berner Contest and try to win some fantastic prizes. Here is
the website:

http://www.overthefence.com/helpberners/bg/

I do need you to send me an e-mail and tell me how much you are sending and
how you'd like me to distribute your tickets. That way, if your check is
late, you'll still be eligible for the drawingand if you win something,
your prize will be mailed as soon as your check arrives. But, I need to
know how much you're sending and what your choices are for your tickets.

The drawing will take place next Sunday evening, so you have to "DO IT
NOW!!!"

I'm tired of being bored with no tickets to process! I'm still waiting
for that 'avalanche' of envelopes to come! You have a great chance to win
some wonderful Berner items, because with 99 items, the tickets are spread
thinly, which means the "odds are good" that you will win.

Thank you to all of the people who donated those 99 great Berner items!
(Special thanks to BARC for helping us get those lovely etchings - see Tier
A - Items K & L)
Thank you to all of the people who have already sent their checks to
support Berner-Garde!!
Thank you to Karen Pickel for doing our web site again!!!
Thank you to all of the people who are going to heed my plea and send their
checks in now

You are a very special group of people!!!

Joye Neff and Nicky (and Ben)

RE: Berner-Garde Fundraiser

2003-08-27 Thread Caldwell, Liz
Just a few (okay, not so few) words to emphasize how important this can be:

My Sophia is a BARC rescue. She is a Hungarian import, and although the odds
are that none of you will be importing any of her relatives for your
breeding programs, there may be those among you with relatives, as there are
those brokers who have been importing Hungarian Berners for at least two
years, and I have no doubts that they will continue to do so as long as it
is profitable.

Sophia had her OFA x-rays taken this spring and sent in a couple of months
ago. I got the results back yesterday. Unfortunately, my vet had partially
filled out the forms and didn't transfer much of the information I had given
him, so OFA has slightly different information from what I have entered in
BG. But Sophia (registered name Radisson Carmen) has been entered, and Pat
has the health information I sent her from the OFA results.

Sophia's x-rays indicate moderate hip dysplasia, with subluxation,
remodeling of femoral head/neck, and shallow acetabula.
Her elbows are both Grade II, with findings of DJD.

She has had transient limps a large portion of her life, so this didn't
really come as a surprise, and I suspect a slight tilt to her pelvis/hips
hasn't helped. But if only she had had relatives in Berner-Garde so that I
would have been better prepared for my own roller coaster of a reaction to
reading these findings.

I wouldn't want anyone to buy or breed any relative of hers without this
knowledge of her orthopedics. I am more convinced than ever of the need to
check as many dogs in a pedigree as you can. There are certainly those
imports whose progeny don't carry kennel names that provide any clue where
they came from, and we know that there are those who have bought registered
dogs from pet stores whose foreign background may only be evident with a
pedigree search.

I don't know what Sophia's future holds, but I do know that I would feel
awful if any of you were to breed a relative of hers and end up with a whole
litter with the same challenges. I know that I will treat the dog and not
the x-rays, and I will give her the best life I can.

Berner-Garde gives us the information we have to have if we are going to
improve the health of the breed. We owe it to our dogs to make use of it,
and to support those who make it available to us.

TERRIFIC!!! I am always HAPPY to hear that another check is coming for
Berner-Garde.THANK YOU.
I'll let you know when your check arrives.

By the way, my computer is now alive and running well, but if anyone sent a
check and it's had time to reach me and you haven't received a thank you
note, please send me a note to see if I did get it. Many of my messages
were not being delivered when my computer was 'ailing' and in some cases I
sent 3 thank you notes and finally on the 3rd time my message got through.

Don't forget to send in those checks - here's the website, just in case you
misplaced the url:

Thanks in advance for your support of Berner-Garde.

I've seen that new hand-painted etching that was donated by BARC, and
it's absolutely magnificent!! It's not a big piece, but it's a real
beauty! If you haven't taken a look at some of the items that are being
offered, you're missing out on a very big treat!

Oh, and I happen to have a jpg file of the hand painted etching by

Berner-Garde Fundraiser and TWO NEW EXCEPTIONAL ITEMS!!!!

2003-08-21 Thread Dr. William B. Neff
Hi Everyone,

I am indeed alive and quite well, although very busy at work and at home.
Something weird has been going on with my computer and Daniel, my computer
guru nephew, is coming over this week for dinner and to look at my computer
so he can "heal it." I know that some of my messages are getting lost in
cyberspace for some reason. My Norton Anti-virus updates for new viruses
several times a week and it also checks outgoing message for viruses before
sending them out. I do know that people aren't always getting my messages
that I send, though. I sent three messages to my sister on Sunday and she
only got two of them. I've sent Nell Ward three messages about receiving
her check and thanking her for her donation and as of last night she hadn't
received any of them. SoI am hoping that this message will reach
everyone.

THE BERNER-GARDE FUNDRAISER is still going on.it will end on August
31st and, as usual, I'll leave about a week before the drawing to allow you
procrastinating Berner Lovers time to get your checks and cheques to me. ;-D

So far, I have only $1,831 in checks, but I KNOW that you folks always come
through for the Berners and for me in these fundraisers. Please go to the
website that Karen Pickel did for us to see the wonderful items at:
http://www.overthefence.com/helpberners/bg/#top
This is a "Name the Costco Berner" Contest, so when you send me your
generous check, you need to also send a Berner name for the contest. Please
also remember to include your name, address, phone number,
e-mail address (so I can thank you for your donation,) and the number of
the items from Tier 1 and Tier 2 that you want your tickets to go towards.

One generous Berner person donated ten tickets for the quilt fundraiser for
the Entlebucher fundraiser to the first ten people who donated $50 or more
to the Berner-Garde Fundraiser. These people have won a bonus ticket for
the quilt fundraiser. To see a photo of the quilt, go to:
	http://bernese.biz/fundraiser.htm
Here are those very lucky winners of those ten tickets: Nell Ward, Toby
Erlichman, Andrea Brin, Robin Hamme, Helen Hollander, Alexis Smith, Lisa
Elliott, Susan Hayden, Maureen Hayes & Mary Shaver. Congratulations to
each of you and good luck in that drawing!!!THANK YOU for your generous
donations to Berner-Garde.

As a SPECIAL BONUS, I am announcing TWO NEW ITEMS TO TIER 1 for the
Berner-Garde Fundraiser. These two exceptional items have been purchased
at a reduced rate from BARC (Berner Auction Rescue Coalition) who has
always supported Berner-Garde, and I know that everyone is going to want to
try to win themA nationally known artist, Geoffrey Lasko, has made
a gorgeous Berner etching for BARC. He has made 180 titled, signed and
numbered black and white etchings and 20 hand painted etchings. These
are just amazingly beautiful and they are a limited edition of just 200
etchings. The etchings are an intaglio printmaking technique and each
print is a unique work of art. His current project is do etchings for
each AKC breed and these works of arts are available through Sotheby's and
other exclusive art markets. Tickets for these items are $5 each...or...3
for $10...or...8 for $20. Unfortunately, my photos of the etchings are
not to be found this morning, but I'm sure that Jane Heggen can supply us
with a web site so you can see them and I promise that Karen Pickel will
get them on our Berner-Garde Fundraiser web site real soon.Just trust
me on this one - you will feed a great need to send in a check once you see
them.Oh...and don't forget to check out the other 97 items so you can
send in an even bigger check for Berner-Garde!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Joye Neff and Nicky (now 85 pounds at almost 8 months) (and Ben)
Waiting for the checks to pour in - in Mt. Lebanon, Pittsburgh, PA
P.S. I sent this message this morning at 5:57 a.m. and it never appeared
on the berner-l. I'm hoping that this one makes it.

Why Patricia, Maria Crifasi would do nothing like that to get the
paintings. She'd have a much more subtle plan - she'd just walk by with
Buddy and Daisy and when you started paying attention to them, she'd calmly
and collectedly, slip the paintings into her BIG purse and continue walking
her Berners. You'd not even miss them until she was out of sight. All
you'd hear is the laughing as she sped out of the parking area with the
paintings and her Berners.

The wonderful items that we have for our Berner-Garde fundraiser are just
so spectacular, the it drives people to do strange things..

ANNOUNCING........THE 5TH ANNUAL BERNER-GARDE FUNDRAISER~!

2003-07-13 Thread Dr. William B. Neff
ANNOUNCINGTHE 5TH ANNUAL BERNER-GARDE FUNDRAISER~!

This is what you have all been waiting for ~ it's the 2003 Berner-Garde
Fundraiser. This year, we are doing something a little different to add
a little variety to your lives! Nancy Melone, Berner-Garde Treasurer, has
donated one of the those big stuffed Costco Berners to our fundraiser.
So...we are going to have a .
"NAME THE COSTCO STUFFED BERNER CONTEST!!!"

It's easy to enter your name to win the stuffed Berner, but you must pay a
fee to enter the contest. You can send in as many entries as you'd like.
For every entry, I will give you free tickets for our fundraiser items.
We have two levels of items: The First Tier has 10 items, which are
lettered A through J. If you'd like the tickets for those items, here are
the prices to enter the "Name the Costco Berner Contest" - Entries cost $5
each...or... 3 entries for $10...or...8 entries for $20. The Second Tier
has 87 items, which are numbered 1 through 87. If you'd like the tickets
for those items, here are the prices to enter the "Name the Costco Berner
Contest" - Entries cost $1 each...or...6 entries for $5...or...14 entries
for $10. Just send me a note with your name the Berner entries and tell
me which items you'd like your free tickets to go towards.I also need
to know your name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

As an added bonus, anyone who donates $20 or more will receive a beautiful
Berner poem bookmark made by Faith Hopperstad. Thank you, Faith!!!

Oh, and in case you were wondering..all donations to the "Name the
Costco Berner Contest" will go towards Berner-Garde. The Berner-Garde
Foundation was established to collect, maintain and disseminate information
about genetic diseases observed in the Bernese Mountain Dog. It is a
501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation and donations made to The
Berner-Garde Foundation are tax deductible. The mission of The Berner-Garde
Foundation is to ensure that all Bernese Mountain Dogs have a long and
healthy lifespan of twelve to fourteen years! To accomplish this goal, the
incidence of several serious hereditary diseases must be decreased and,
over time, eliminated. It is the hope of all who know and love a Berner
that the work of The Berner-Garde Foundation will lead not only to an
understanding of genetic diseases in an individual dog, but also in the
Bernese Mountain Dog breed as a whole.

The history of the BMDCA and Berner-Garde is a lengthy one. There has
always been a close working relationship between the two groups. A new
effort is underway to develop a DNA Bank for the storage of Berner DNA,
along with a tissue repository for the breed. Several other breeds already
have a DNA bank. Berner-Garde and the BMDCA already have something like
this with the Tumor bank. But think of it - the tumor bank only has
abnormal tissue, where a DNA bank would also be able to house DNA samples
from all Berners, healthy as well as ones with any diseases. It would
include pedigree and medical history information, too, thus making it much
more valuable to researchers. Genetic research could proceed more quickly
without the need to wait several years for sufficient samples and would
support research into genetic diseases affecting the breed, both now and in
the future. This effort is a joint developmental effort between BG and the
BMDCA. There are still many details to be worked out, and many issues to
resolve. And when it is finally implemented, there will be costs for
storage and processing.

With the DNA Repository in the works and the other Berner-Garde projects,
we need to raise funds to support these efforts to extend the lives of our
Berners. I'd like to make this fundraiser one of our largest ones ever.
Rememberit's "for the LOVE of a BERNER!!!"

Now, you might aks, how can I see all of these wonderful items? It's
easy. Go to the web site that Karen Pickel made for our fundraiser and
you'll see the 97 items and the specific instructions for sending in your
entries for the "Name the Costco Berner Contest." It will be exciting to

Don't worry, Janice, you didn't miss the information on the Berner-Garde
Fundraiser, because it hasn't been announced yet!!! I was just telling
Mary-Ann that Nancy Steward had donated a pair of those lucky green sockt
to the Fundraiser - sort of a "teaser" for the upcoming fundraiser!!! I
will most likely launch the Berner-Garde Fundraiser tomorrow evening.

Hi Joye!

I missed the post on the Berner-Garde Fundraiser-must have been when I was
away and I postponed the list. Can you give us the info again, for those of
us who may have missed it?

Thanks,
