2 dogs in a suburu

2003-05-31 Thread Beverly Arnold
Does anyone have any experience fitting 2 berners in a Subaru? I am picking
up a 7 year old girl tonight (125#) and Han is 89 and growing. I have a
outback sport (late model -paid for, thank goodness) Until I find a job I
can't move up price wise but might be able to trade for a forester. I would
appreciate anyone's experience/comments. I haven't been able to access the
archives lately and it seems that the CRV was the smallest car
mentioned -was that one or two dogs?

I have two Berner boys - 125 lb and 112 lb. I cart them both around in
the back seat of my Honda Civic. Just load 'em up!

Hi Beverly,

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback. Daisy, who weighs 75 pounds, goes in
the back. Buddy, who is 115 pounds goes in the backseat. I have a fitted
machine-washable waterproof cover on the seats that cost $54 and is still in
super condition. I also have a car harness that both wear. Buddy is
harnessed to the seatbelt and Daisy is harnessed to a cargo hook with a
carabiner clasp for weights up to several hundred pounds.

For short trips, both go in the back and appear very comfortable. Ok, Buddy
may be comfortable and really enjoys squeezing against Daisy. After about
20 minutes, they sound like toddlers scrapping.

Obviously as a family trip vehicle with two dogs, this car is WAY too small.
We have a Caravan that is perfect for long trips.

For dog shows, the all-wheel drive (for getting out of muddy parking fields)
is great!!

hope this helps.

I also have an Outback , which can hold 3 70lb dogs in the back :-). We got
the 3 dogs in the back , the crate on the roof rack , and the human kid in
the back seat , two adults PLUS food and other sundries in the other
backseat over Easter weekend ! For a two hour trip.
Usually , I let the two berners have the back and the older golden x have
the second backseat for trips of any kind. But they fit and that roof rack
comes in handy !!! I think you can manage nicely with it until finances
allow you to afford a van or other SUV :-))). I'm looking at something
larger for next time around so I can fit a crate or two in the back set up ,
and have air conditioning for the back area as well. Good luck !!!

Beverly;

When I got Klarsson at age 16 months and about 29 tall and 110 pounds, I
owned a full size 2-door coupe. 2 weeks after Klarsson came home, I traded
in my 2001 Monte Carlo SS for a Ford Focus Station Wagon. While it isn't as
tall as the Forester, I have comfortably fit Klarsson, his girlfriend Morgan
(a 2 year old female English Mastiff weighing in at about 160 pounds) and my
poor little Sheltie in the back of the car with, of course, the seat folded
down (permanently). It works fine. I've even traveled with both dogs and
their crates and their suitcase and my suitcase and cooler (crates were tied
to the roof rack) and was plenty confortable. However, you end up with a
permanent 2 seater (which is fine for me as I'm a single dog-mom). I looked
at several station wagons and SUVs and found that the Focus had the most
cargo room inside of the vehicles I was looking (including bigger than some
of the SUVs). I look forward to getting my second Berner and I don't think
I'll have to upgrade my car to have her.

Good luck on finding something.

I have an 85lb Berner and 90lb Golden, not only do they both fit it the back
seat of my sedan, but they sit in the SAME SEAT!!! I could fit at least two
more dogs back there! Tell me again why I'm getting them an SUV???
