Re: List Messages - ADMIN: Plain Text versus HTML

2002-11-22 Thread Pat Long

You see? This is what I'm talking about!! I am NOT making it up!! As a
matter of fact, I'm going to forward what it is that many of us see when you
post in HTML. I'll remove the culprit's name to protect the insolent, I mean
innocent.

Subject: List Messages

I'm just curious, does anyone else get the digest form of the list and if
so, do you have any problems with not all the messages showing up? I
notice that quite alot of the messages never get posted on the digest form.
I get a funny message about HTML in where the message should be.

I'm wondering if there is anyway for me to correct that in my mailbox?
This is something I only started noticing using my hotmail. Back when I
use to get this list at my home mailbox, about a year ago, I never had this
problem.

Thanks,
Karyn

ADMIN: Plain Text versus HTML

2002-11-22 Thread Pat Long

HTML, or hyper-text markup language, is what allows us to post with colors,
underlines, italics, and all of the special text editing techniques that we
have available to us.

The Berner-L cannot handle it properly, nor can everyone's email software.

Plain text is what is required to post to the Berner-L so that all of us can
enjoy all of the posts. When you post in HTML some people will see your
message, some others will see the message along with an error message, and
some of us will ONLY see that error message. It seems to have something to
do with the way that the List Proc sends out the messages and the way your
email software displays what it gets.

Anyway, please learn how to post in plain text. If you are on AOL 7.0 or
later, I can tell you right now that you will have to go to www.aol.com to
post that way. AOL helpfully removed the ability to post in plain text from
their recent releases.

Other email software often has an option for HTML, Rich Text, or Plain Text
formats. Please select plain text as your default for the List. My
[EMAIL PROTECTED] address I use with MS Outlook. When I recieve an HTML
email and then reply to it, my reply is in HTML. I have to switch it to
plain text.

I do not know all of the different email software out there, and I can't
tell each of you how to post in HTML. But I'll be happy to try to help you
figure it out! If you aren't sure, then send me email at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll let you know if it's in HTML or not.

I know of one person that is posting in plain text, but error messages are
still generated. I have no idea what is causing this, and can only guess
that the email is being treated as an attachment somehow - also a no-no.

In case you're wondering, the scrubbing software at the List Proc that
causes this issue was put in place to stop the viruses we were getting so
many of last year. That part seems to have worked just perfectly!

Thank you all for your help and persistance in resolving some of these
anomalies,

Pat Long, a babysat Gabby (& Luther)
