Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Remote SqueezePlay through ssh redirect

2008-10-29 Thread dwilliams01

OK, any ideas or suggestions on how to "enable udp" through ssh? I was
pretty sure that I'd already done that for softsqueeze a while back...

Also, I download the latest SqueezePlay and switch to the desktop skin
and I don't see any buttons - the window just gets bigger and otherwise
looks the same. Perhaps this is a Windows Vista issue?

Should we start filing bugs for SqueezePlay issues or is it too new
yet?

Thanks!!!

Here is the latest one that I am testing with and the latest protocol

have that already works with 7.3.

Are those firewall rules on the SqueezeCenter computer or on your
actual Internet gateway? Or is your SqueezeCenter computer also your
home firewall?

I've seen the audio playback feature still take a few tries to get
going--as in, enable the player, exit and restart SqueezePlay. Perhaps
more than once. There's some weird state persistence that takes a few
restarts to fully resolve. I assume it's an interaction not just on
the client side but the server state.

I'm wondering if you discovered anything from these logs?

I've tried new SP builds from time to time but even the latest builds
operate exactly the same. The logs report the same things as above.

Here's the pattern I'm seeing:

- just after installing a new build, a command window will often open
and close and I can get to the setup screen, but it freezes there

- every time I start it afterwards, it freezes at the "Free Your Music"
screen. Sometimes the command window will open and close.

- sometimes when I move the cursor to the SP screen it remains as an
hourglass, sometimes it changes to the proper black pointer

- if I click anywhere in the SP screen, the title changes to
"SqueezePlay Beta - Not Responding" and I have to kill the process

I fear it's some dumb Windows conflict. The firewall should let
traffic through and I can definitely see the server - SoftSqueeze works
fine on this computer. I do notice that sometimes my wireless software
(Intel PROSet/Wireless 11.5.1.2 for Intel 2200 BG) drops the connection
and at first I thought it and SP were conflicting, but it often drops
the connection when it runs out of CPU resources.

It's not the latest and fastest machine but it ought to work: Pentium M
1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM.

Could it be that because it doesn't complete setup after installation
it's in an inoperative state?

Thanks, I'll be happy to test. If it matters, I'm on Linux and am
mostly interested in transcoding from WMA.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Web UI borked in Firefox

2008-10-29 Thread oreillymj

Just updated to the latest nightly
Version: 7.3 - 23729 @ Wed Oct 29 03:33:30 PDT 2008

and when I try to open the webui in Firefox, I get a download dialogue
box, telling me I'm trying to open and application/octet-stream.

Seems like the page is missing the correct MIME type.

I.E.7 blissfully ignores the mime type and renders the page.

My comments refer to SC up to 7.2.x

In 7.3 it may be associated with the new streaming method and not
transcoding. It may be the case that it is "normal" in 7.3 but the
message level was not changed from "error" to "info".

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Feedback requested for 7.3 controller fw r3206

2008-10-29 Thread chinablues

Rolled back to 7.2.1 23190 and after a lot of fiddling with settings,
eventually got all wireless 'things' working. Transporter, Duet box
and a Linksys wireless camera. (Transporter always connected OK, the
Duet box & camera were a lot of trouble). I don't think the camera was
relevant...but just one of these 'connection' issues where things don't
work & then suddenly they do. And then you unplug & move to correct
location & they don't work. And then they do. It's a bugger when you
think you carefully log what you changed & what the results were, which
combos work & which don't etc., & at the end of the day you still don't
know what magic button was pressed to make it all work. The wonders of
Microsoft...(I changed the router..which introduced a lot of
non-connection issues).

Once all seemed OK on 7.2.1, tried to install 7.3.23711, but the icon
just kept saying "Squeezecenter Starting" After a couple of hours of
this..., ran uninstall & then installed 7.3. 23686. Ran/installed OK.
Controller said the firmware was 'up to date' at 7.2.r3191, but I ran
the update utility anyway. Controller updated to 7.3 r3220. (despite
saying it was 'up to date').

Things 'look OK', but time for bed here, so no chance to try out music
or anything else. Rained a lot today, so no time for golf either. But
nice dinner by the beach.

UDP is used to discover SCs, just like a real player. I expect that
sometime or other an option to enable you to specify the server's IP
address will be added (like with a hardware player) but I have no idea
when. I guess it ought to default to using/offering-to-use the same IP
address as the controller-SC connection.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Remote SqueezePlay through ssh redirect

2008-10-29 Thread dwilliams01

I thought that I was forwarding 3483 through ssh. I have both that port
and 9000 forwarded. I remember setting up udp forwarding in my firewall
and the server side of ssh, but it was a while ago and the details are
no longer clear. I am using Bitvise Tunnelier as my ssh forwarder. Is
it just not possible to setup udp forwarding through ssh in general or
just "difficult"? I was pretty sure that there was a upd need back
with SoftSqueeze as well, but that worked. Odd.

I had installed the latest version available on the nightly when I
originally posted and didn't see any on screen controls - just a bigger
menu. I guess I was a few hours behind... I"ll try harder to keep
up... :)

Definitely have UDP open too:

gently:~# iptables -L -v -n | grep 3483

Possibly. It's annoying if the 'A' shortcut doesn't work, and the volume
too, as there's no other way to access those features without the hotkeys.

Ok. Just trying now. Here's what I did:

1. Shutdown SoftSqueeze
2. Shutdown SqueezePlay
3. Uninstall SqueezePlay
4. Clear out the install folder (there were a few 'settings.lua' files, and
the log files in the top directory)
5. Download the latest SqueezePlay (dated 29th Oct, 01:07)
6. Install this
7. Run it
8. Hold down 'left cursor' to get to the top menu
9. Go to 'Settings->Music Source->Other server'
10. Enter my IP address
11. It goes back to the 'Music Source' menu, with the name of my server in
there
12. Go to this server, and use the right cursor to select it. All I get is
the noise that implies that I'm doing something wrong. I've got
further than this before though I'm sure.
13. Now, if I go up to the top and do 'Select player' all I get is the SB2
in my house
14. Go into 'Settings->Advanced->Audio Playback' and turn it on.
15. Back to the top level and into 'Choose Player'. Still only see the SB2
in my house. No evidence through my firewall logs of any packets
being dropped.

Any thoughts? It's connected to the server enough to be able to browse my
music. Could it be because the server already knows about the instance of
SoftSqueeze in the same remote location?

Thanks

Andy

'A' doesn't work for me using the latest version (downloaded today).

Actually, it's not that exciting...the controller has a port for
attaching a serial port on the bottom. It's useful for debugging
console output, esp. during boot before SSH is possible. Basically, it
gives you a linux prompt where you can watch things.

But I would note the awesome scale model of R2-D2 on top of the big
screen.

cheers,

For the keys issue: What OS are you running SP on? I have been working
in that area of the code but I haven't seen any issues (on Mac).

Some additional shortcuts have been added but all the old ones should
work (p,a etc...)

The latest keyboard shortcuts for SqueezePlay can be found at:

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Remote SqueezePlay through ssh redirect

2008-10-29 Thread mrfantasy

I haven't been able to get SqueezePlay to work without being able to get
to UDP port 3483 on SqueezeCenter. Since you can't easily do UDP
forwarding through SSH I don't think it will work. I'm not sure what
the UDP dependency is (I've been meaning to get some packet traces) but
it is definitely there.

Later builds of SqueezePlay have a much better looking Desktop skin,
with play/pause, and previous/next track controls on screen, clickable.
I'd like to customize the album info (track number and date would be
nice) but that's not available yet, at least through the UI.

If SoftSqueeze works, you shouldn't need any other firewall ports (just
9000 and 3483--but make sure 3483 is UDP and TCP. TCP only will work
with SoftSqueeze but not Squeezeplay.)

I had a problem in Vista with keyboard shortcuts if you didn't run
SqueezePlay as administrator. You might also have the problem in XP,
which I assume you're running at work. This happened even though I'm
an administrator on my desktop.

Also, when you install a new build, make sure you not only uninstall
the old one but check for files in c:\Program Files\SqueezePlay. I had
a bunch of lua files left behind, and it seems if those are inconsistent
things don't work, notably audio playback.

Also, perhaps unrelated, I had my home IP address change, and I had to
reenter it in SqueezePlay, but to get it to actually change it, I had
to remove all the application files as above. It'd be nice if you
could identify a player by DNS name (I have a dynamic DNS host set up
for my home address)

Selecting audio playback is now done in Settings/Advanced/Audio
Playback/Enable Playback (BETA).

Hope something here helps. I'm guessing you either have the UDP port
issue or the old install conflict thing going on, since I've seen
similar symptoms due to those issues.

I'm a software engineer, and have developed a very 'keyboard centric' way of
working. I try to avoid having to touch the mouse if I can avoid it, it just
slows me down.

With SqueezePlay controlling the SoftSqueeze instance no my PC, it's very
simple to ALT-TAB to SqueezePlay, use the keyboard to navigate and select
some more music, change volume etc. I can't do a lot of that with the
keyboard alone using SoftSqueeze, and virtually none of it using the web
interface.

I'm yet to have any success in getting SqueezePlay to work as a player from
work (with my server on a Linux box at home). SoftSqueeze works flawlessly
using SqueezePlay as the 'control' app in this configuration, but I just
can't get SqueezePlay to work as a player.

I've also found that the last build I tried (a day or two ago) had the
problem where a lot of the keys didn't work (P, A and the + and - keys are
the ones I use most).

Any hints greatly appreciated. Any extra firewall ports I need to open?

The only thing I ever play on my system is MP3's.

I have occasionally tried listening to Newstalk & TodayFM's MP3
streams, but given up because the URL's change so often.

However the entries in my logs are far more recent. I'll need to check
again when I get home.

What are you playing ?
I see that message when a stream is being transcoded but there is a
problem with the transcoding application (e.g. the source device is
busy and so fails to provide data)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Feedback requested for 7.3 controller fw r3206

2008-10-29 Thread oreillymj

I tried 3206 with 23711 and had quite a few strange things happen to me
while setting up my new Boom. I recycled the server a few times and got
the BIOD, which I actually haven't had for a while. This required a
reboot.

I had all sound feedback go, so the wheel was silent while turning
requiring a reboot. I posted a thread about this recently thinking it
was only caused by putting the controller into Sleep mode manually and
re-awakening it. But it may be a more general issue.

Album art is now slower to download and a bit buggier then it was
before. Sometimes the thumbnail will appear, but not the full size
image and vice/versa.

On the whole, this release feels sluggish. I fired up the old beta
controller I had with r2080 on it from March and it felt much more
reponsive scrolling through menus. Unfortunately I can't upgrade this
controller ude to the UUID/Mac bug.

[SlimDevices: Beta] FFWD/REW behaviour

2008-10-29 Thread oreillymj

This morning, my new Boom's alarm went off and started playing the
desired playlist.

I sleepily hunted around for the pause button, but accidentally hit
FFWD. I then eventually hit Pause and then for some reason decided to
put the track back to Track 1 of the playlist.
I hit REW and went to close my eyes for a little snooze when I noticed
the analog VU flickering. I couldn't hear anything, but the volume was
pretty low.

So after getting up, I tried the same on my SB3 and found that REW and
FFWD will now unpause a player and begin playback.

Is that the expected behaviour? I can't remember if it Sc always worked
this way.
Most CD players that I own will keep music on pause as I move from
track to track.
