Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Changing order by doesn't have any effect

2009-07-29 Thread frank1969

yes, it been a typo (the ARTISTSORDER thing) and yes, 1974 - ABBA -
waterloo was used to simplify it's really:
year: 1974
artist: abba
albumartist: abba
artistsort: abba (removed for after adding sc didn't show up abba in
the artist library anymore)
album: waterloo

so the suggestion is to delete the albumartist-tag in any compilation
files and leave it empty? how does sc recognize compilations? just from
the compilation-tag = 1? and then those albums are listed behind the
albums of the original artist?

can anyone confirm (for i have to re-tag some 25.000
compilation-files)?

thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Changing order by doesn't have any effect

2009-07-29 Thread JJZolx

The compilation settings may also play into the behavior you're seeing.
Under Settings Music library, you probably want:

- Group compilation albums together
- List albums by band

If you don't have these settings, try them and see if it makes any
difference before making any tag changes.

Compilations are recognized in one of two ways: Either SC sees that
there are different artists on different tracks in the same album, or by
using the COMPILATION tag. The COMPILATION=1 tag shouldn't be necessary
on compilations, though; it's mostly useful for non-compilations that
have different artists (such as with guest artists) by setting
COMPILATION=0 to keep SC from calling the album a compilation.

You can verify how an album is categorized by browsing into the album
in the web interface. You should see the track listing below, and above
the tracks you should see the cover, album name, year, duration. If SC
thinks it's a compilation, you'll also see 'Compilation: Yes'.

I would make tagging changes to no more than a couple of albums until
you've confirmed that the changes do what you wish.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Detecting new server version?

2009-07-29 Thread Mark Lanctot

Version: 7.4 - r27832 @ Mon Jul 27 08:45:52 PDT 2009
Server HTTP Port Number: 9000
Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Platform Architecture: 586
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread

I see 7.4 is up to 27885 now. Some versions of Squeezebox Server would
detect and download a new version, indicating one was available through
the Control Panel - Advanced - Software Updates. I believe some even
had a popup indicating a new version was ready.

However I have not had a popup or indication that a new server version
is ready since I installed this version. Should I be expecting one or
do I download it manually?

Thanks.

This is irrelevant. It has nothing to do with what gets listed; it onlt

Where artist or band is replaced with Album Artist if there is one set

Compilations are recognized in one of two ways: Either SC sees that
there are different artists on different tracks in the same album, or by
using the COMPILATION tag. The COMPILATION=1 tag shouldn't be necessary
on compilations, though; it's mostly useful for non-compilations that
have different artists (such as with guest artists) by setting
COMPILATION=0 to keep SC from calling the album a compilation.

This is true. Albums that have differing artists are automatically picked up
as being compilations, unless that is overridden by having an Album Artist tag.

As Frank has an album artist present, the scanner doesn't see it as a
compilation, but as an album by album artist.

Two options:

1) Remove the album artist, and SC will show the album as a compilation
automatically. This is perhaps the best course of action if you only use
SqueezeCenter.

If you also use other apps, you may want the album artist tag still though, to
group all songs on the album together under that artist name (or Various
Artists if it's a compilation, for example).

In which case,

2) Add a compilation tag. This depends on the file/tag format. eg. for mp3
id3v2.3, you could use Mp3Tag to set ITUNESCOMPILATION=1 (which actually stores
in a non-standard frame invented by Apple, called TCMP). Alternatively, add a
custom tag called COMPILATION (most likely only used by SqueezeCenter).

I see the same. Posted this as follow up to your bug report:

I see the same, but not consistently. Sometimes I get to the track
info, other times I see the same as you: some spinning an then the list
again, in which you can't scroll. The home button works though.

I think related: since this version I often get 'Connecting to server

on the info screen 'not connected', but I can control my transporter
with the controller!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Changing order by doesn't have any effect

2009-07-29 Thread frank1969

well, thanks - I tried it all and it got worse (fourtunately I only
tried it with some files to see, if they behave in another way than the
others).

First of all:
They didn't and it didn't solve the problem, so I still don't see any
changes choosing the artists, year...-order.

What I tried:
deleting the ALBUMARTIST-tag in compilations
adding the ITUNESCOMPILATION = 0 for one artist-albums
the ITUNESCOMPILATION = 1 is set on compilations in all my files.

But now what it made it worse:
For the ARTISTSORTORDER and ARTISTSORT tag didn't have any effect
either I deleted them again. But - You remember ;) - after adding those
tags, the artist (e.g. ABBA) wasn't listed in the artist section of the
library anymore. This behaviour still continues AFTER deleting the tags
and update-scan the database.

BUT - what I recognized - using the SEARCH-function of the browser,
they are shown but listed at the very end:
e.g.
Black Sabbath
Elisa Gabbai
ABBA

So I guess, this function orders by ARTISTSORT (or ARTISTSORTORDER)
and it lists first those who have the tag left empty, and then starts
mit ABBA.
And further on I guess this could correspond with a bug I filed, that
the scanner doesn't re-move old entries from tag fields, so i guess,
although the ARTISTSORT is left empty in my mp3, the database has still
ABBA; or ABBA;blank.

Can anyone test, if those behaviour could be reproduced so we/I could
file a bug and get this solved?

Thanks!

Frank

I haven't been following the full thread, sorry.

It's not clear to me what actual problem you are having now (It got worse
isn't very descriptive!).

Some things to bear in mind:

You may need to do a full rescan, rather than a scan for new/changed files.
Especially if:
1) You change compilation tags.
2) You change sort order tags.

If you change artist sort tags, make sure you've changed ALL songs that have
that artist name. The scanner is non-deterministic; if you have several songs
with the same artist name, but different sort order tags, I'm not sure which
sort order will be stored for that artist in the music library database. This
is similar to issues reported in bug 10324.

Are you really using a custom tag called ALBUMARTIST, or the id3v2.3 Band tag
(aka TPE2 frame)?

If you search for the artist to find an artist that isn't sorting correctly,
and open that artist to view albums, and drill down into an album, or even into
a song, what does it display in the album details and sort details? i.e. it
will tell you if it thinks it's a compilation, and if it has found an album
artist.

frank1969;444230 Wrote:

Obviously you're using Mp3tag, but you're making the same mistake as
when you tried to use ARTISTSORTORDER. These are Mp3tag's _internal_
field names. They map to ID3v2 frames for MP3 files, but they do NOT
map to anything in FLAC files. You're getting a literal
ITUNESCOMPILATION field in your FLAC tags, not the desired COMPILATION
field. (In Mp3tag open the Help, then go to Names and mapping of
ID3v2/WMA/MP4 tag fields. You'll see the mapped field names, but note
that they're only for ID3 and WMA. For FLAC files, use the actual field
names.)

So I guess, this function orders by ARTISTSORT (or ARTISTSORTORDER)
and it lists first those who have the tag left empty, and then starts
 mit ABBA.

No, that's not how it works at all. If you exclude an ARTISTSORT field
then SqueezeCenter should simply use the value in the ARTIST field for
sorting. Needless to say, for 'Abba', an ARTISTSORT containing 'Abba'
should have no net effect.

And further on I guess this could correspond with a bug I filed, that
the scanner doesn't re-move old entries from tag fields, so i guess,
although the ARTISTSORT is left empty in my mp3, the database has still

The scanner will remove old data if your run a 'clear library' type
rescan.

Can anyone test, if those behaviour could be reproduced so we/I could

I don't think you're seeing the results of any bugs. Are you running
SC 7.3 or SC 7.4? SC 7.4 does have some scanning bugs, but it scans my
library, tagged as I've been describing, with zero errors.

2009-07-29 Thread JJZolx

You know what... You may be seeing an obscure bug, after all. I didn't
think it manifested itself in the web interface, but maybe it does
sometimes.

When you have exactly _one_ artist in your library that has their own
album(s), and then you also have compilation albums, sometimes the
artist count is off by one and you only see the Various Artists in the
artist list. The thing that makes it a really obscure bug is that
virtually nobody has a library like that.

Try adding an album by a different artist and see if Abba then shows
up.
