I also use my duet exclusively to play local files and I definitely will
not sign up anywhere just to do so. I don't even have internet access at
my summer house. If Logitech really insist on a sign up, I'll have to
either resell the device or stick with 7.3.4 and all its known bugs and
unfinished beta features I'm long waiting for (e.g. head phone jack).
So, please Logitech, rethink that decision. Again. Please.

28244 received as expected. Latest Controller firmware work as a charm

Small question though, and yes I know this is not the correct thread

Yeah, that's been the general consensus among, oh, I'd say 99% of the
beta testers of all the software they've randomly tossed out in the last
year or so. But don't hold your breath. If Logitech can sell players
that don't require a local music server, then they figure they'll sell
more players. One can only speculate about the affiliate deals that
they may have going with all of these as-yet-to-see-a-dime music
services, but I suppose they figure they're covering their butts by
sucking up to them while they try to figure out what their revenue
models will look like.

Completely agree. There are a great many people out there who have
squeezebox's that don't have a connection to the net. In the UK a great
deal of people use 3G connections to browse the net, but cant share that
connection with other devices. Some people just dont use SN anyway. It's
a big mistake IMO.

I agree - I think Logitech may not have researched the market properly
as 3G connections are the significant growth area of user internet
connections not just in UK but also in other European countries and
there are EU reports which document it.

The typical user of a 3G connections are the same sort of users which
use internet most and download music. These are the targetted user who
would buy Squeezeboxes but with this requirement would then have a bad
experience trying to make it work.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Request: Font size adjustment in new controller UI

Dear Forum,

Dunno if this has been requested before:
Could the dev team please implement a function that lets the user

As for now, the font size is far too big.
I would like to see more information than just a few chars in each

Thanks in advance

Could not the install package of squeezeboxserver always contain the
proper fw for all devices, this will solve this for installs w/o
internet.
Now I see that fw get downloaded to my local squeezeboxserver when it's
time for an upgrade, but could not some version be there in the first
place ?
Ie if i download SC7.x today it will contain what's considered an ok
version of fw, in the nightly 7.4 this will be the latest all the time.
This would at least solve the problem when someone gets an 2 year old
duet from somewhere.

Well i f you want SN you obviously have internet, so that would not
pose a big problem, but as said elsewhere al people don't have their
connection to inet up all the time.

So Matt, basically people with no internet connection - people with 3G
internet (which can't be shared), people with satellite (which alo often
can't be shared), people with 56kbps dial up, people in very
rural/remote locations, people who want to use a Squeezebox in their
summer house/vacation cabin... all these people won't be able to set one
up, and thus are effectively excluded from buying a Squeezebox?

Are there no plans to allow this step to be skipped? Why not as a very
minimum, just try and ping a known SN server and look for local SBS
instead if the ping is not returned?

Seems like a very strange marketing decision to excluded so many people
and upset many people who do buy, then find it cant be set up. If this
is the case, i strongly believe this will go down like a lead balloon
with user and will be a decision Logitech come to regret.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Are the keyboard arrow keys supposed to function on the Web UI?

2009-08-24 Thread tamanaco

JJZolx, thanks for clarifying how the Web UI is suppose to work when the
mouse is hovering over the panel. Btw, I understand the Web UI is not
designed to be navigated by keyboard. I use the mouse all the time, but
I would have not noticed the keyboard issue and inconsistencies between
the browsers had my mouse not failed. Btw, I find the keyboard Page
up/down useful when navigating long lists of album, artist or stations
as it is a bit more precise than using the mouse wheel or the scrolling
bar. It is useful when I just want to move to the next page with a
single key press. Ditto, about the scroll wheel differences IE and
Firefox. Since IE is not as snappy as Firefox when scrolling, the
selection bar did not appear to be moving in concert... that's what lead
me to believe that there was a difference.

To be fair, that was DirecTV's only way to verify that you weren't

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bizzare setup procedure with new SBC FW ? should i file a bug

2009-08-24 Thread bklaas

Just for clarity, it's important to note that there is no requirement
for an internet connection during normal use of the device, just during
setup.

There are some valid points being made on this thread, but I want to
make sure we don't go off the rails into FUD where people think
broadband is required for normal use. It is not.

Consider that an out-of-the-box Squeezebox Controller was manufactured
with a very old firmware. It's extremely important for us to be able to
get all new users an update straight away, or their experience to put it
mildly will be miserable. The way we manage this is having a central
repository that distributes these updates, and it is done over the
internet. After setup, pull the internet plug and use a local Squeezebox
Server and never connect to the internet again.

I'm not posting this as a dismissal of the previous posts, but to
clarify both the scope and the justification for the network
requirement.

cheers,
#!/ben

Yeah, a smaller font would be nice. It'd also be nice if the text in the
black box that appears when you press PREV or NEXT would wrap at the
edge of the box instead of running outside of it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bizzare setup procedure with new SBC FW ? should i file a bug

2009-08-24 Thread andynormancx

I want to add a further reason why requiring an Internet connection
during setup is a very bad idea.

Imagine someone buys the product, takes it home and through bad luck
their broadband service fails before they get setup. In the UK at least
it can take days or weeks to resolve problems with people's broadband
connections (especially if everyone in the household works and therefore
they find it hard to be around when the telecoms engineers are on
shift).

They are going to be unable to complete the setup and use the product
for potentially weeks because of this.

And this isn't just hypothetical, I've had broadband faults that took a
couple of weeks to resolve on three of the DSL lines I deal with for
myself and relatives.

Requiring an Internet connection for setup is a bad idea, please don't
do it.

In addition, Internet Access is already required for all of our
product-setups (for new users) because we do not ship our software
in-the-box. This is not a new requirement, its only new for users who
already have SC running (assuming its up-to-date-enough for their new
product), and don't have internet access available at that very moment
for setup.

IMHO, there is a difference between requiring a piece of standalone
software to be downloaded pre install (I can do this at an internet cafe
or at work, onto a USB/smart card) and requiring an internet connection
at first use. In fact, this is what I did when I was stuck post-move

Can someone clarify _exactly_ what this new requirement is ?

Does the SBC need to contact SN the first time it is turned on ? Or
every time it is factory reset ? Or some other rule ?

Look back at Ben's post. He clarifies it. It's only during first-setup
from a factory reset.

I was asking for clarification precisely because Ben's post wasn't 100%
clear to me.

"there is no requirement for an internet connection during normal use
of the device, just during setup"

It wasn't clear what "setup" meant in this case, whether it meant the
first time the device was used, during factory reset or maybe some other
point.

But for win user the installer is an exe that could be downloaded in
advance, for example at work.
Or one might install the server in advance for other platforms to.

And for SC /SBS is it no longer possible to skip SN account setup ?

I'm ok with the reasoning behind "very old fw" in controller it's all
to true.

But to able to download fw from the net, is it also necessary to join
squeezenetwork ?

I think the mandatory signing to SN is bugging people the most ?
I'm already a member because i chosed it for the benefits it have.
But why should you always be prepared to shed some of your privacy for
using a product these day's ?

An anonymous download of firmware would be ethical to me.

My thought was the installer for squeezeboxserver should always contain
up to date firmware (up to date meaning fw from the day it was
downloaded ), fixing these old firmware problems if the Internet is
unavailable.

I realise normal use does not require it, in fact that point could
actually confuse people even more. Because if you are buying an internet
device, you obviously expect to need a net connection. But people who
are buy this as a 'network streamer' wont expect it required.

And there wont be and 'normal use' if you cant it it up in the first
place.

I also think that there is a big difference in needing to download SBS
before hand - many people will expect that and can do it at work etc. A
lot of people buy NAS's with SC pre-installed too.

It reminds me of the debate when people bought computer games, which
needed online activation even for single player off line use.

Note that this is not entirely dissimilar to the Logitech Harmony
device setup requirements. The Harmony web app is the only way to get
a device configured and while there may be a few outliers, most people
have accepted this as a requirement given the device architecture.

In this case, however, we're talking about a very different device
architecture and the utility of activating a device over the internet
is of questionable value to me.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4-r28249 is terrible

2009-08-24 Thread MeSue

Since installing 7.4-r28249 on WHS this morning my players all keep
stopping and rebuffering. I can't get through one full song without it
stopping. The controller is constantly showing the reconnecting spinny
which ran the battery down to the recharge message in less than one
hour. The WebUI can't load the playlist--just shows a "loading" spinny
in the playlist panel forever.

I'm attempting to roll back, but it took me 20 minutes just to open the
WHS Console so I could uninstall.

I'm one of those users who almost only uses my transporter to play music
from my own library. And I think I'm not the only one. I find it
occasionally nice to play with internet radio because it's there and I
have a good internet connection, but that's all.

As others have said, an internet connection should not be necessary,
even during setup. It should be possible to download the latest server
software (including the firmware) somewhere else and setup your device
and play your own library music without any internet connection.

Actually, this weekend I just installed a new duet at a friends place.
He doesn't have internet there (his weekend house) and it just worked (I
had all the necessary stuff on disc).

Ok rather than arguing about the logic of the decision (that has been
made, and for the near-term future is essentially set-in-stone) -- why
not focus the efforts on coming up with scenarios where the user will be
unable to setup their product, and workable solutions.

These would make a great Wiki article for setup of SqueezePlay devices.

Partly answered, there are two issues that get mixed in those treads.

1. Internet connection

2. Mandatory SN membership

They don't necessarily belong together.
I'm aware of that some SC functions get supported in the background by
SN.
You might not get the full experience as conceived by logitech without
it.
And of course partnering services probably want their offerings to
exposed to new customers right out of the box.

Well that would rely on making the SN registration avoidable/optional.
Otherwise the only only option would be to take you SB to someones house

Exactly. They are two completely different issues.

Number 1 is going cause a FEW people without 'net connections endless
frustration when they buy a shiny new Squeezebox Touch and find out it
can't be used. I thought this has been addressed, though, by allowing
the box to get its mandatory initial firmware upgrade from the local

I can understand the logic of needing a signin to update firmware, but
for those who neither want to, or can't (not all people have broadband),
the dialog should have an option to skip to the next page. I can't
believe that that option is not possible.

The day a company stops listening to customers is the day it start to

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bizzare setup procedure with new SBC FW ? should i file a bug

2009-08-24 Thread funkstar

I may as well chip in, everyone else has :)

Requiring a net connection on first setup - Understandable (although a
work around would also be a good idea)

Requiring a MySB account for setup - bad.

You can't forget a MySB account unless you factory reset, and then you
require one again to get it going. That means the device permenantly
requires a MySB account. I'm sure there will be a lot of folks that are
uncomfortable with this.

This is all I get when trying to use SN, as well. A prompt on the sb
that I have to enter a pin (given) at the website somewhere and no where
on the website to enter it (that I can find). The players show up
automatically, though, on the website. I just can't use them. Also,
I've noticed that the "remote control" feature has what appears to be a
drop down of players - it is blank for me.

So long as people who download SC from work/friends/cafe realise they
need to also download the latest firmware and also know what to do with
it.

Worth merging these two threads?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bizzare setup procedure with new SBC FW ? should i file a bug

2009-08-24 Thread bluegaspode

> why not focus the efforts on coming up with [...] workable solutions

As I understood your specification says:
1) new users should be forced to run the latest stable FW on their
controller, there shouldn't be a way to work around this.
2) it isn't mandatory for users to have a SN-account to achieve that
(though your current method works this way).

>From these specs follows a third mandatory spec:
3) new shippings of the controller can't contain an installation CD
with a probably dated SqueezeServer-version. If you had such shipping,
the controller would be upgraded through SN upon first start, and than
be downgraded by the dated SqueezeServer from the CD. The user would be
in an inifinite loop of up- and downgrades.
I conclude, that the SqueezeServer will have to be downloaded 'fresh'
by new users as well.
If you ship a CD it will 'just' have a small application that will
guide through the process of downloading.

If 1+3 hold true, we are in a very comfortable situation:
- On first boot the controller just has to look for a local
SqueezeServer. If it finds one it can be sure, that this must be a
'fresh' downloaded one with the latest firmware that was available at
the time of buying.
- If it isn't finding a SqueezeServer (because the user didn't install
one yet), it is forcing the user to open a SN-account, to give the user
instant access to the latest firmware and internet-radio.

Actually you are able to solve all of your problems:

- new unaware users, who just turn on their new gadget, have a great
first time experience, given that they have a very good internet
connection.
they are forced to open a SN-account, get the latest firmware and are
really happy about all those cool radio stations they now have access
to.

- users with no or very low bandwidth have a very simple workaround:
just donwload and install a new squeezeserver on the local network -
then still have a lot of fun with local music (these type of
'low-bandwidth'-users isn't helped with a SN-account and internet-radio
anyway)

- people doing a lot of factory resets (beta-testers, developers) are
happy as well: they are not forced to always enter their full account
details (this made me going nuts with a long email-adress + long
password), because they have a SqueezeServer running as well.
SN-account-details are saved in the server settings - so they have the
goods of both worlds: SN-access + local-music.

Please give me hints on where I made mistakes in my thinking. I can
only think that if point 2) doesn't hold true, you will have to stay
with your current implementation, because thats the only one that forces
users to have a SN-account.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Bizzare setup procedure with new SBC FW ? should i file a bug

2009-08-24 Thread sschulte

There are a few different concerns that have been raised but I wanted to
clear up two things that I think address the core questions.

First, I definitely want to state that the primary case that setup has
been optimized for is users who a) do have an Internet connection that
can be accessed by their Squeezebox and b) who want (or may in the
future want) to use SqueezeNetwork-based services and the SqueezeNetwork
site itself.

That said...

You will be able to set up a Squeezebox and play local music without an
account and without an Internet connection present.

In this scenario, the device will first attempt to connect to
SqueezeNetwork. Since there is no Internet connection present, it will
fail. However, if there is a SqueezeCenter instance running, you will be
able to connect to SC.

Note that if you've also downloaded the latest firmware (while at work,
for example) and dropped it in the relevant SC directory (I believe it's
/cache/updates/), you will be notified that there is a firmware upgrade
is available and will be able to complete a firmware upgrade (again,
with no Internet connection present).

After the player fails to connect to SN (since there is no Internet
connection), you can press-and-hold the left/back button on your player
or remote to go to the home menu. Once there, you can select your music
library and play your local music.

FYI, I just logged a bug to include a menu item on the "can't connect"
screen to display any SCs that are detected and, when selected, take you
to that library. If you then go "back" from there you will be on the
home menu (with a menu item that can take you back to complete the setup
process so that it's easy to get back to if your Internet connection is
available again at a later date).

I'm not sure if adding the menu item on the "Can't connect" screen will
make it for the next release, but at a minimum, you will be able to
press-and-hold left to go to the home menu where, to repeat, you will be
able to access your local music library with no SN account and no
Internet connection.

Hi sschulte, thanks for taking the time to register and respond on the
forum. I take it you are one of the new guys :)

That does sound ok, if that's the long term plan. There does seem to be
some confusion as it sounded a bit like the long term plan was to
absolutely demand on an internet connection for setup, period. I think
it would be better if the device checked for an updated FW with SC and
even on SD card first, but understand you can be certian SN will be the
most up-to-date.

However, what is not clear to me is whether or not it will require a
MySB account or simply just an internet connection?

[SlimDevices: Beta] mysqld and 100% CPU usage

2009-08-24 Thread JHC

After installing Squeezebox Server 7.4, I am seeing the same behavior
over and over again:

1. Every time I start the server, mysqld cpu usage goes to 100% and the
server doesn't complete startup (i.e. I can't log in via a web browser).
At this point, if I kill the mysqld process, it gets restarted somehow
and the Squeezebox Server becomes available.

2. After any music scan, the same thing happens.

What logging should I turn on to get to the root of this?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Thanks to some other messages from awhile ago, I have narrowed this
down to behavior caused by one of erland's plugins. I will re-port this
in the plugins area of the forum.

After disabling trackstat, dynamic playlists, and sql playlists,
Squeezebox Server starts up normally.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Activation and "notnat" (WHS 7.4)

2009-08-24 Thread hohum

Sometime last year, I had registered before for mysqueezebox.com
(http://mysqueezebox.com/). I had no problem logging in when I went to
the website.

However, just recently, I reinstalled my WHS (if you want to know what
NOT to do, just ask me). I was pleasantly surprised to find that the
software was available for WHS, albeit in beta!

Gleefully, I installed it and everything seems to be working fine - at
least in terms of streaming and playback... However, when I try
supplying my original username and password via the Squeezebox Server
program on my Windows Home Server or via the actual Squeezebox Boom
itself, I get an error stating that I have an invalid username or
password. Well, considering the fact that I can actually log in at the
mysqueezebox.com (http://mysqueezebox.com/) website using the exact same
combination, I KNOW I have the right username and password. And no, I'm
not mis-typing it or anything like that...

I kept trying to no avail. Ultimately, on the Squeezebox Boom, I
followed the prompts to create a NEW account. I used the exact same
email address and password and it told me it was successfully created.
Now it seems my Squeezebox and the Squeezebox Server program on my WHS
can both connect to mysqueezebox.com (http://mysqueezebox.com/). But, at
the same time, I cannot log in at the mysqueezebox.com
(http://mysqueezebox.com/) website.

Additionally, I got the activation email for my "new" account and it
tells me to finish my registration at:

http://notnat/user/activation?acode=8707802a

I have 30 days to activate my new account. However, I've tried the link
and this link goes nowhere (where's the TLD?). Please advise as to the
following:

1. Proper activation link.
2. Why my mysqueezebox.com (http://mysqueezebox.com/) login and
Squeezebox and the Squeezebox Server program on my WHS login are
different.

Thank you.
PS - Delivery to supp...@mysqueezebox.com fails...

Wow, that's very strange. It has been like night and day since I
switched back. I'm running on an HP EX470 up'd to 2GB, though I doubt
that would be the difference.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Activation and "notnat" (WHS 7.4)

2009-08-24 Thread gcurrie

If by recently you mean in the last two weeks, then the "beta" has been
repointed to test.squeezenetwork.com instead of www.squeezenetwork.com.

You need to create a new account on test.squeezenetwork.com. I used the
same username and password to make it easy once they point the beta back
to the production server.

So creating new accounts on www.squeezenetwork.com doesn't work since
the beta doesn't look there.

If you have a version earlier than the high 27??? (don't remember the
exact numbers) then this doesn't apply. Today's build is 28249.

I'm using Version: 7.4 - r28225 @ Wed Aug 19 04:02:36 PDT 2009.

Regardless, I don't follow your reply. I never said
"squeezenetwork.com" - I said "mysqueezebox.com" - are these the same
thing??

I'll go and make a new account on test.squeezenetwork.com; however,
does this really explain/solve the cause of my issue and the weird
"notnat" domain?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Activation and "notnat" (WHS 7.4)

2009-08-24 Thread gcurrie

You have the new beta that uses test.squeezenetwork.com, which is a new
site entirely.

Your old mysqueezebox.com account is still active, but you cannot
access it with the current beta. You need a new account. It will log you
in to the "new" mysqueezebox.com.

There is a long thread on this:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66441

I have no idea what notnat is. Looks like a typo to me. I don't
remember seeing anything like that when I created a new account.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Activation and "notnat" (WHS 7.4)

2009-08-24 Thread blblack

"notnat" is just a red herring, it's unrelated to your original problem.
It's just an internal hostname used within the SqueezeNetwork equipment
racks for some internal purposes, and the code the generates the email
is mistakenly giving you a link to this internal hostname that you can't
see or reach.

That issue aside, the real issue is just confusion between the domain
names and the test vs production environments.

Production SN has traditionally been www.squeezenetwork.com. It's
getting a new name officially in the near future, which is
www.mysqueezebox.com (and actually, that name is already in place as an
alias to the www.squeezenetwork.com production envionrment).

At this time, SBS 7.4 and our current Beta hardware players' firmwares
actually connect to www.test.squeezenetwork.com, which is a completely
different environment than production, with a different set of user
accounts. If something on a player or SBS user interface tells you to
go to mysqueezebox.com or squeezenetwork.com during the beta period,
you're best off ignoring that and going to www.test.squeezenetwork.com
instead, which will actually work.
