Jim said that the memory usage is effectively 4x greater, and performance is
several times slower than 7.6 before onebrowser.

Sounds like it needs fixing to me before it is released. Someone else said it
can even cause stuttering playback because its spending too much time and not
feeding player buffers?

I don't see why you would need that file: if there's no scanner.exe in
your installation folder, it should automatically fall back to scanner.pl.

And the additional plugins folder is just for your convenience, not a
requirement, isn't it?

I got this info from the Spicefly forums. It seems that some specific
things it uses are left out in the latest 7.6 builds.
Since it's the only plug-in I use (I even donated), I wanted to be
ready for the next release, without mySQL support.

I'm not sure it's a simple factor. Actually I think it's lower to start

about 80MB to 100MB while using various options in the web UI. I then left

No, rather an attempt to bring three different implementations of the same
functionality (browsing your music collection) in to one single
implementation.

Historically there have been three distinct collections of code for the
classical display (aka ip3k), the web UI and the newer players (aka SP,
SqueezePlay), each of them with their own tweaks and issues.

No, general memory use isn't 4x greater, but it's not hard for certain
operations to run it up to that point. And the overall memory footprint
may fall back after some time. I'm sure that's somewhat dependant on the
Perl implementation and OS.

>

That shouldn't be difficult to verify, although it's only in some
situations. For the most part, I'd say that performance is on par with
7.6 trunk. Still, it's troubling, and I'd expect it to cause a lot of
problems in the long run.

All in all, I'm beginning to seriously doubt the benefits of
onebrowser. From a user perspective, the idea of a consistent
experience in each of the different user interfaces is certainly
attractive, but at what cost?

The choice of solution for the web interface seems to be a step
backward in several areas. But the thing that I just can't help
wondering is: Why were all the many bugs with Squeezeplay never
addressed until now? For a while we had the mythical "new schema" that
was conveniently tossed out to solve all problems. And then
"onebrowser". How did SqueezePlay ever get to be so broken, and why did
nobody ever honestly try to fix the consistency issues until now?

To me it seems like this great code simplificaton is just going to
cause a lot of different problems, and incur a great deal of interface
inflexibility that should not be there. There must be a better
solution.

The benefit of onebrowser is simply to at least offer a remote chance
that all the interfaces can be preserved over the long term.
You know who's working on SB-Software at Logitech so count one and one
and you'll find that this is the only way to realistically make sure
that there will be _any_ web interface and support for older Squeezebox
models in future SBS releases.

This is not about consistency or usability, it's about simplification.

True, the extra plugin dir was for my own use.

I've been using this Custom.pm since 7.0 betas with a few tweaks along
the way as the server evolved. Back when I first tried to get SBS 7.6
from SVN to run, shortly after the branch was created, the scanner
could not be found without the scanner function override.

Just checked 7.6 r32188 and the scanner appears to work with the
scanner function commented out in Custom.pm.

I only use Browse Music Folders when I have some tracks that haven't

And from a third party plugin perspective it actually have some
benefits because the "onebrowser" implementation means that third party
library browse menus can focus on the menu content and leave the user
interface rendering to standard SBS code. Hopefully this might also
open up some possibilities for simpler third party browsing plugins
instead of advanced solutions like the current Custom Browse plugin. So
even if Logitech doesn't implement all the browsing alternatives we like
to have, the "onebrowser" implementation offers a lot better support to
add new browse menus and replace existing browse menus and make them
available in all interfaces with correct look and feel.

So even though a few things might seem like a step backwards currently,
I think we are going to look at this as something positive in the end.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms?

2011-03-28 Thread erland

Is the idea to keep the current principle where LMS just scans the disc
for images/video and drops the database in-between full rescans or are
you also on longer terms thinking about adding more library management
functionality where you can manage the library similar to what WMP,
iTunes and similar applications offers ?

I'm just asking since for images things like being able to tag photos
and structure them is very important functionality for me personally in
a media server. For video, library management functionality might be a
little bit less important but I'm still interested in functionality
like IMDb integration to get more information about about a video but
maybe that's already handled on the Revue on the client side ?

I'm guessing the plan maybe is to just do something simple to at least
make it possible to use LMS together with Revue, I'm just asking these
questions to make you guys think one step ahead. On longer terms a
media server without any library management functionality feels a bit
complicated since it means that you need to use at least two other
external applications, one to tag and manage photos and another to tag
and manage videos, besides the already existing need to have the same
for audio files.

I tend to agree, although I still worry about losing functionality for older
players that isn't in newer players. i.e. onebrowser offering support for the
lowest common denominator, and the lossed functionality never getting put back.

But if memory consumption and performance are drastically affected by the
change, it sounds like a non-starter. Sounds like something is wrong though,
as one might expect memory consumption to be lower if all interfaces share the
same back-end implementation.

I haven't tried yet. Scanning in 7.6 still seems a bit broken for me, even
when I use SQLite. I was going to try again with no shortcuts in my music
library, but haven't had time in the last couple of weeks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms?

Andy: will you let us know when LMS is at a point where you'd like us to
start kicking the tires? I've got a fair amount of DRMless M4V content
that I stream via mediatomb to MLPlayer Lite on my iPad...so I'm ready
any time.

I look forward to seeing how this works with the Revue. Right now my
Revue is mostly a Netflix and Amazon VOD device. Support for video
formats is limited.

Maybe they like to you to get the more expensive Boom if you want
stereo support ;-)
