Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Lms 7.8?
*Enhancement* request 142 is a problematic one for a reason I think. As the server software is committed to a solution where it never ever write to the files directly and this is very dear to many users. This paradigm wins in this situation. This will undoubtedly always lead to a situation where you loose all ratings, Erland has gone to some lengths in his plugins with an externally available trackstat backup . But this is for technical reasons not safe either as there are circumstances where the file can't be 100% identified . One way it works is by the extremely geeky music brains id and some other means . There are great ideas that could be implemented if the server did not treat the dB as a temp a mere reflection of the tags . But that would need a whole other level of programming where the dB always could be recovered and translated between schema changes and not needed to be " cache cleared" aka tossed away for every minor scanner issue and it would need to hash every file during scan to create unique identities but eventually for safety reason it would need to write an Id to the file . Then the dB could be augmented by all sorts of info and associated functionality not only ratings that would only be the 1% of what would be possible . A greatly enhanced music exploring application that many wants. but even this is a bit over the top for most users that are not committed music nerds you must keep the file collection in order and tagged. There is a lot of pull in the other direction where people just want to play a jumble of misshaped files by folder and file name and those users already treats music as a disposable not a cherished collection. This is eventually also outdone by all taut relies on a service to even have files is a minority solution. I would settle for if they actually fixed bugs in whatever functionality they decided the server should have. As it is now I'm irritated by the fact they do build functions that are buggy and never fix them instead they develop next function that is also buggy ad naseum . And it detoriates, old functionality brakes and is never fixed they are not on top of the maintenance aspect of this . And in many cases this does not lead to high vote counts a prime sample is that album artist issue . Other examples include where less tech savvy user usually think they have done something wrong or never realise how it really should work . Another example it has becoming popular by for example Bandcamp and some other vendors to use separate track art in addition to album art . This is great now every song has a different artwork and the album as a whole one. this actually worked before 7.6 but is broken now the presence of track art even brakes the functionality of album art and this issue has all of 3 votes or similar. So please please fix total lack of quality controll . Do a rudimentary QC before every release have a functional spec and test every function against that . -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Or a buildt in web-page in the unit just like a router or 1000 of other devices you hook up. But none of this solve the basic problem . To reached by LMS /SN it must already be setup at least the ethernet/wifi part . Ehternet is easy you just plug it in and it gets assigned ip via dhcp . But to type in a wifi password you must type on something and see what you are typing . You could ofcourse set it up by first connect it via ethernet and then type in you wifi settings . And the whole mysqueezebox.com account speil could be performed on a webpage after you do that. Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LMS moving forward?
Great , excellent :) Scale up as in functionality previusly not seen in lms ? Return of old functionality , missing menus and custumisation options that dissapeared with " one browser " ? The bugs what about them ? I'll gues I have to stay curius for a while, very curius :) I have some design wishes. Make the scanning better in about a 100 different ways. It's must be so good that end users do not notice other than the time spent at the initial scan, this should be the only full scan ever needed. Adding incrementally over the years should give you the exact identical dB as scanning the whole lot agian with the exceptions of the added dates . Do not force rescans with updates build software that migrates old dB to new dB . Store all information it's a dB rigth, do not rescan because some setting change for the UI on how to include or present artist or anything like that. It's for the aplication itself to fix this not the dB. Done not crash the scanner, note " flawed " files in the scanner logs in human readable form with a fault description that makes sense to end users to ( of course keep the current info on where in the code it went wrong ) . After not crashing it goes on building a dB with files it can read, so the user always end up with a usable system . Do not interupt music playback when scanning ! Ever . Make it yet again possible to BMF while scanning. db should be avaible gradually so that you could start using lms while the dB is still being built. Upgrades ? Keep mysqueezebox.com backwards compatible at least 2 major realeses . Users that do not upgrade can ofcourse not use new services or functionality or bugfixes. Scanning and upgrades is many users main complains about the software, they are afraid of upgrades because they anticipate scanning problems to ? And the smattering of new bugs with each version. If you got in favor again with more resources get your quality controll up and running again :) -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. [SlimDevices: Beta] Scannfor new and changed issue
had some weird one lately . Have been using the 7.7.2 beta since before xmas and been adding music continiusly. " new and changed " had usually worked fine . But not yeasterday ? It did scan added the files, but then died before updating the server so it was thinking it was scanning forever ? The last famous words was error cant read tags for bla bla , in some case some m4b audiobooks that i had for years and they never made any trouble before. And in one case a mp4 video ! Now I have not ticked in video for my music library so it should be ignored and further ir run the server with --novideo . A clear and rescan everything works fine . I will add more music later today and do a scan for "new and changed " and see howmit goes . This sugest that something is unstable with dB or scanner , if I can add music to a " fresh " dB but not one thats been in use . I did some changes due to an album with wierd modification dates I fixed those and rescanned then lms started to act up ? -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. They made quite a lot of scanner changes and when this feature was of so obviulsy not accounted for ? wonder if they ever plan on bringin it back . Why maintain features that are no > longer called for? +1 keep choosen parts of 7.7.1 that worked . With limited resources you can't work on video scanning bugs anymore ? It starts to be bugs in bugzilla about certain players and tv's that don,t work with lms. Given that the so called dlna "standard" is what it is, this is endless work there will always be something that don't play nice with lms a total waste of time for the devs. And then we have the comlete jungle of different video standards defacto standards and weird formats that is used anyway ? there seems to be no tagging or losely agreed metadata . so the database aproach as it is realised for music can not easilly be aplied for video, let it be someone elses headache :) If you want to use your squeezebox music to a dlna player there is the whitebear third party app that integrates with sbs/lms and is well tested and seems to work ( acording to it's dev and userbase ). And for video and picture content you can simply run another server software ( you can do that for music too ), I'll bet that mediatomb or any other dlna server have much more dev resources than logitechs squeezebox team wich seems to be needed if you want to be on top on that game. Developing for a limited set of players with known properties seems "easy" if you compare ;) Having controll of both ends you can do what you want. my Touch behaves my radio is more random . but in reality I use only clock on black background when not playing and now playing with the big cover ir style when playing. i rarely use the off state ( I opted for black screen ). this survives server reboots fine . but then agian I use my iPad all the time not touching the players anymore, so they toggle between these two states and have probably fallen in to some semi stable loop. I think kaos is present in the bizarre state machines running on both server and player to keep everything in check ;) Are programmers thinking in these terms any system with feedback can get in to caotic behavior where semingly simple functions amplify each other into a mess ? the old players where stupid they have no choice but to be as the server comanded, squeezplay is semi independend I bet things can be unpredicable depending on exactly what it is doing when the server want something. [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.7 LMS onboard Touch Idea, more than one file location
Now that 7.7 can have more than one music folder specified . Can it not be so that , Tiny LMS or what you want to call it . Can be given the ability to use SD card and USB port at the same time and more than one USB device . This whole idea falls apart if the scanning invoked upon adding a new folder gets to be a total scan of all folders, it should scan the added USB stick or SD card .(otherwise it would be a disaster and making everything worse not enhancing it) The idea is that users having an USB drive and then friends pop over with USB stick of some more music . But ofcourse then removing it should not cause a complete rescan of all folders.(that would also be a disaster) maybe this requires some adjustment to the multidirectory scanning in LMS and can not be considered to 7.7.0 I will not post it as an enhancement request myself , as imho server onboard Touch is waste , I'll rather have you all working on 8.0.0 or a new product :) But I would not keep what I think is a good idea from you -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Ok then must be something not understod by me with the changelog it reads tag 7.7.0 on 33626 . But apparently it is ..614 Then 33626 is the log entry for making 33614 the release ? So it is out now, sort of ? mysqueezebox.com claims that it still is 7.6.1 But you can get from the link frank posted . They holding the announcement for some reason. Tried to load plugin saw no dB locked error at least . But as experienced in bug 17639 your plugins brake the functionality of separate scan for a folder . Don't run the dlan plugin. And most importantly edit the sysconfig/squeezeboxserver file (or what it is on freeNAS ) and add --noimage --novideo as an argument for startup . This will make 7.7 very similar to 7.6.2 it may not work at all :-/ just an idea to single out if it is the newfangled video and picture scanning parts that breaks functionality In my case i have noted that you don't rely need to have any media files it is enough that these things are running to disturb my server. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. That actually concur with my experience the squeezeboxserver part is not broken *If* I really managed to bypass all issues by disabling picture and video support ?? Did I . Dlna server ? is not most of the people *not bying squeezeboxes* miffed about that the players wont conect to a typical dlna media server ? So the teaming masses want's dlna enabled players not dlna servers ? " rushed " can it be installed on all platforms yet ? I'm quite happy that SS/SC/SBS/LMS do exist that really makes these players go for me :) focus on that. the potential for improvement is wast this tread is not the place to rub in the 100's of improvements that are needed i do hope that this years core development in "one browser" makes the product easier to maintain and enhance. For me most improvement lately has come with the "side show" like iPeng SqueezePad , Triodes spotify plugin m hergers wonder full little bandcamp plugin etc. The scanning is faster than ever for me, so that is getting better but -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
