NIce. Is there any facility for detecting changes at startup that may

Yes, FlipFlip, thanks so much for SSOTS, it's a great service to the
Squeezebox community.

Is there anything we can do here to make it easier for you to stay up

that would help?

Let's be creative here to make sure that everybody can be kept up to

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] LOL! It's "Squeezebox Server" now? Should have just called it "Bing Server"

On Jun 7, 2009, at 10:49 AM, autopilot wrote:
> Interesting though that you plan to split the webUI and core server
> into two seperate and distinctly named elements.
Not really. Squeezebox Server still has a web interface that lets you
control your Squeezebox and manage your server..

But Matt's idea is that the user's expectation is that the server can
be controlled from a more traditional control panel, at least on
Windows and Mac.

The trick is getting that control panel right. It doesn't take away
from the web control, but does, hopefully, add a more intuitive way of
managing your server and your squeezebox.

We actually have two different web applications:

   - browsing and playback control
   - account, service and player management

And it turns out that both kinds of functions need to work from
mysqueezebox.com (nee SqueezeNetwork) as well as from your Squeezebox
Server (nee SqueezeCenter).

Unfortunately, we've had _four_ different interfaces for this, which
is way too many.

So, I'm pushing for:

   - our "Web Remote" for browsing and playback to be consistent, no
matter if it's coming from your computer or the mysqueezebox.com site.
   - a simplified server control panel for managing the software
running on your computer
   - a consistent, centralized web interface to manage internet-based
services, radio, etc. on mysqueezebox.com

Now power users (like us) want more, um, power, so we'll continue to
allow some utility access via your web browser (or even command line)
to the internal bits, progressively revealing useful stuff to everyone
when we can make it simple enough.

It confused just about every new user we tested.
Squeezebox,SqueezeNetwork,SqueezeCenter, nobody could keep track of
what's what.

> Or the one before that?
That was "SlimServer" which was based on the name of a company that no
longer exists and had nothing to do with the product at all.

Exactly right. Very good.

> But that was all a product of the last wave of marketing
> turmoil, which wasn't very long ago.
Yes. And they got it wrong. And they don't work here anymore.

So, we try to improve.

The thing you buy is a Squeezebox. To set up an account, you'll go to
mysqueezebox.com (would have preferred squeezebox.com, but it was
taken).

To play music stored on your computer you install the Squeezebox
software, which includes the Squeezebox Server.

Seems pretty straightforward. We'll continue to test it with new (and
existing) customers and make sure we're actually improving things.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] What next 7.3.2 or 7.4 ?

2008-12-19 Thread dean blackketter
Sorry for the confusion on the 7.4/8.0 thing.

At this point, we're trying to get the 7.3.1 out the door as soon as
possible to address a couple of significant quick fixes to problems in
7.3.

The 7.3.2 target is the next minor release that we expect to make, as
yet unscheduled.

The next major release is slated for sometime in May next year and we
expect that the number of significant improvements to the software
justify calling it 8.0, though we haven't changed the version numbers
everywhere to reflect this.

So, for the time being 7.4 = 8.0.

Yes!

There is a significant reworking to the streaming code (aka "new
streaming) that will be merged in soon. It fixes some long noticed
bugs, improves synchronization, but isn't completely bug-free yet.

There is also going to be a re-architecting of the database (aka "new
schema"), which will likely introduce a little instability as it gets
constructed.

Finally, there are a significant number of bugs that are targeted for
7.3 that will be fixed.

The core SqueezeCenter team is working hard on ironing out the latest
bugs for the 7.2 release later this month, so expect that after the
7.2 release, 7.3 will get a little less stable while we start making
these significant changes.

It doesn't matter that much. File it against the product (Controller,

7.2 is on a fast track right now, to be released by the end of

The current plan is that the next official release is 7.1, sometime

We are keeping a branch open based on the 7.0.1, in case we need to

Ok, thanks. And to be clear, you are using a 64-byte key? Typically,
keys are ASCII strings of up to 63 bytes with a trailing zero byte. I
do realize that there are some routers that allow 64 byte keys, but
you wouldn't be compromising your security with a 63 byte key (or even
a much smaller one).

The new Transporter features that Sean's been working hard are

follow-ons) will appear in those nightly builds.

The 7.0.1 version will include some minor, critical bug fixes to the
Transporter firmware. Look for an update there soon. Those same
fixes should also appear in the 7.1 builds.

Unfortunately, the firmware version numbers go up in only one
dimension, so you may see confusing firmware numbers in the two

Also, just to reinforce, the existing accounts on the beta service

Yes, the new SN will release with SC and the firmware for the
Controller & Receiver.

In fact, we'll be releasing SN a couple of days before as there are
some subtle dependencies on the new service in the new software.

If you still see issues, PLEASE file bugs on bugs.slimdevices.com.

Can you capture a log of the scan so we can figure out where it stopped?

Andy fixed a serious bug on Windows that caused the artwork scan to

That's what the XML files is for. iTunes has its own "iTunes Music
Library" file which keeps its private database, and exports the XML
file for outside applications (including other Apple applications) to
know what's in the library. Deleting the XML file is a safe
operation, though I think that in the case that iTunes has a
corrupted DB, it will import the XML file to recreate it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Naming confusion

2008-01-13 Thread dean blackketter
That's a good question... At this point there's no way to change the
Home menu title on the Squeezebox display.

As a point of reference, on the Squeezebox Controller we use the name
of the player that's being controlled as the title for the Home menu.

We could do the same on the Squeezebox display. That way if you
change the name of the player it would reflect on the home menu. (So
it would say "Kitchen" on the player named "Kitchen".)

What do people think of this idea?

One of the thing on Matt's list is to make it easier for the
developers to kick off new "nightly" builds (and subsequently post
them for download) in case of failure. Folks with commit privs would
be able to do this. Would that solve your problem?

Well, the cycles for building a fresh version every night are
essentially free.

The other platforms do a clean build then copy the files to the
server host. Seems to me like the new RPM build process should do
the same and copy to the yum repository.

I think we shouldn't be checking in the nightly builds, rather only
the source that creates them.

It should play all songs beneath the folder.

I filed a bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6455

Feel free to go in and add any additional information or comments.

Thanks!

Do you mean square or rectangular? I'd think that cover art should
always use JPEG since it's always rectangular, without
transparency. Placeholder/service artwork can continue to use PNG.
This will save a bunch of bandwidth and be faster to boot.

With that rule (cover art vs. service/placeholder) we wouldn't need
to modify the DB, right?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Huge thumbnails in SC7

2007-12-23 Thread dean blackketter
Hm, I'm not sure why we would ever want cover art thumbnails to
be .png files.

I can see why we use .png files for the placeholder artwork which has
rounded translucent corners and would composite nicely, but cover art
is (almost?) always rectangular and will be much smaller with JPEG.

This might substantially help performance when browsing artwork
images in the Jive UI.

Do RadioIO and Pandora work flawlessly for you on 6.5.5? Rebooting
like that is often an issue with the player or firmware and usually
not related to the server.
