Is it only slow while scanning your music, or even when idle?

No suggestion but to add to your point, as I've said in another post,
the nightly spends 10-15 minutes thrashing the hard drive before it
finally loads.
I that REALLY necessary?
Probably not but as the brain trust "fixes" 1 bug, more are usually
created.
Spaghetti code reveals itself during execution for the most part.

Hi Andy,

The churning occurs even after a full scan is complete and saved, after
reboot, restart, etc.
Yes, it occurs at startup.

So this problem only occurs when you first start SC, then it settles
down after a short while?

It settles in about 10 minutes, after a clean scan or rescan.

After that it loads normally on restart or reboot if nothing new added
to db.

Trouble is, I usually have something to add on every boot, so the next
start, I am finding something to do while the server churns away.

Well, yes, because I fiddle with my directory structure constantly.
Point being is, for me, this is new behavior I have not encountered

It just seems RAAYYY SLOW!! I even rebooted
Winblows and it's still SLOW! It just takes forever to do anything. My
first post talked about the playlist pane taking forever to load, but
it's really almost every element taking forever. The icons on the left
are taking forever .. the icons on the right are taking forever ..

I know this is Beta software, but it just seems to be going backwards.

The problem is occurring even on the machine where Squeezecenter
resides. Therefore, it isn't a network problem.

Mine never settles. It's just always slow. I have had this problem for
the last two or three weeks, and it's on a pretty fast machine. There
have been no changes to the computer or software.

It's slow all he time. Regardless of whether it is scanning, idle, or

I think the OP and you are seeing different issues here. You might have run
into bug 7104 (which is partially caused by the workaround for bug 4699): we're
pre-caching album art for faster display on Controller & web interface. This
procedure seems to be pretty slow using the method we're using to work around a
crasher in GD for Windows.

Would the behaviour improve if you replaced copyResampled() with copyResized()
in Slim::Web::Graphics? That's not a solution, just one more data point. The
resulting artwork won't be as smooth as with copyResampled().

Thanks Michael,

I think I'll just add music less frequently for the time being, as I

No need to know perl: we added an option in Settings/Advanced/Performance
to use a faster Resize algorithm instead of the nicer Resample. Please
give this a try.

Do you see the same issue if you don't open FF? Or use IE instead? We've seen
cases where FF would use 100% CPU when SC is loaded. If this is the case for
you: are you using some add-ons like add blocker, Firebug or others?

I decided to try Internets Exploder (I never use that browser anymore)
and I do notice it's a LITTLE faster, but it still takes forever a lot
of the time to load a page in Squeezecenter. Even from the
native/server machine!

All I want to do is have near-instant access to my music, to press the
PLAY button on either the remore or the web interface, and have it
start playing within a second or so. I don't want to wait what
sometimes takes 30 seconds to a minute or two for it to start playing
music. I LOVE the Squeezebox, but I am really getting tired of the
sluggish performance of SC!! I just want to play music!

How much RAM do you have?

Is SC running on the same PC as the browser?

Do you have any Firefox add-ins/plugins installed?

I have 2 GB of RAM. I do have FF plugins installed, but I am not using
FF on that machine at this time. I have switched to IE for that
machine.

SC is running on the same machine as the web interface, and yet it is
still unbelievably slow.

Do you have a slow internet connection active on that PC? Win seems to
have bad scheduling related to that. I've got a system that
dramatically slows down all loopback traffic as soon as I connect a
line with a bad ping.

Do you have SoftSqueeze running? Another resource hog on my Win
installations.

Next suspect: iTunes, especially in combination with iTunes updater
plugin.

You did disable your virus scan for a trial, didn't you?

Safari on the PC is pretty fast, yet I doubt this is the browser.

Oh, and: WHAT EXACTLY is being slow? Are you lacking responsiveness or
is it loading the page? On my systems the default skin takes a minute
to load but after that it's quite responsive.

No. The computer that SC runs from is the fastest computer I have in the
house. Softsqueeze isn't running, and I never run iTunes except when I
plug in my iPod at which time I immediately shut down iTunes (I HATE
iTunes!) via Task Damager. I don't presently have antivirus on that
machine (I just haven't gotten around to installing it).

Squeezecenter runs VERY slow MOST of the time on that computer. Plus,
when it starts behaving like that, I have no control of the Squeezebox
via remote control. It's just locked up, sometimes for several minutes.

So you don't have iTunes updater plugin? That starts iTunes in the
backgrund and sometimes provokes the exact same behavior on my system
(to be fair it's not iTunes updater, but iTunes itself, which
crashes).

Also: I didn't mean slow computer but slow internet connection (like
UMTS or something). With slow I don't mean the data rate, but the
latency (ping). That's another issue I'm sometimes experiencing. Is
WLAN working well?

Hi Mike,
Slow start-up... is it here to stay?
As the fix you recommended has no affect on the 3-10 minutes it takes
to get to a fully loaded interface, is there a fix for this issue

But you might have seen the other thread ("can't connect to web interface" or
similar). Could you please follow up in there? There are two log files in

The change I proposed does indeed not influence the startup, but the scanning
