Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default skin

2007-12-29 Thread Michael Herger
I'm mainly speaking about the addition of the OPML browser amd the
 direct editing of Favorites.
Both functions are too confusing and unwieldy for the home page,

Isn't the OPML browser optional, must be turned on in the Favorites plugin? And
there's no direct editing of Favorites in the main menu.

Editing of Favorites, whilst a necessity in my opinion does not sit
well on the home page. You can't edit any other function on the home
page like this so the edit icon on the Favorite title is unexpected and
 very easy to miss.

Oh, you mean that button is direct editing?

Again, I think this editing functionlity is best kept
 in Extras.

So instead of having the Favorites item have a direct link to the edit page,
you'd hide it in Extras?

 1) Is drag and drop going to be implemented on the Remote menus?

In the player settings? That's a good idea. But to make it complete this would
need a lot of work (dragging new items to add, existing to remove them, too).
So I'm not sure this is going to happen in 7.0, or whether we'll just limit it
to sorting. Would be handy.

Or did you mean dragging menus using the remote? ;-)

 2) I'd be happier if Favorites.opml got saved in my Preferences folder.
Currently mine is being saved under my Cache.. so if I delete it I loose
my Favorites (I know it should be saved in Playlists.. and I can't see
why it hasn't, as my playlist folder is writeable, but this seems the
 wrong place too).

I think Playlist is the right place. Do you see any error message to why it
can't be written there? Is the playlist folder within the music folder?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SCv7 default skin on IEv6

2008-01-06 Thread Michael Herger
I'm seeing some visual peculiarities with the default skin on IEv6,
that at first I thought were just Magnatune problems. The first item in
a list (e.g. the Artists list) doesn't highlight correctly on mouseover,
and there's some ugly fringes around some of the graphics. I'm on IE
v6.0 on WinXP SP2; IE v7 is fine.

Argh... we've had that one before... Feel free to add this to the list of IE6
issues:

And when you're done, go out and get a decent browser :-).

Should I raise bugs and provide screenshots or is IEv6 not supported
 with the SCv7 default skin?

It is. And it's a huge pain. There are issues I doubt I'll be able to fix. But
what you report is just a broken style somewhere. SC7 will work in IE6, but I'd
recommend anyone to get something better. Not only for the sake of SC7.

2008-01-10 Thread Michael Herger
I'm intruigued to know how it works though. The url added to favorites looks
like db:album.titlesearch=IN%20RAINBOWS for Radioheads latest album.

Yes, it's a valid URL type.

Also, I went to a Greatest Hits album (one of many with the same album
name), and indeed the link looks like db:album.titlesearch=GREATEST%20HITS.
When I play this favorite, it correctly only plays the one Greatest Hit
album, not all songs on any greatest hits album - how does that work?

That's a limitation of using titles instead of IDs. But IDs wouldn't survive
rescans... But then, can a Greatest Hits album be a personal favorite?!? ;-)

There appear to be other places in the web UI that don't currently have
add/remove favorites icons. Eg. Search results.

Will have to check these.

I've also noticed that if I go to an album display (Home Albums Greatest
Hits), the favorite icon is always an add action; I never see the - for
 remove from favorites.

It was broken. Change 16108 should fix this. Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner log file is now nearly 1gb

I've found that SC7 scanner log file is almost 1gb.

Ouch... you're on Windows? AFAIK log rotation is done on *x systems. But
Windows is still an open request:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1943

The server log file seems to suffer from a similar problem but grows
more slowly (was a mere 0.25gb).

You can always turn off logging. Default log levels shouldn't generate that
much output. But in earlier beta days logging was quite verbose (Information,

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Artist counting on album info screen

2008-01-12 Thread Michael Herger
Joking aside, I don't understand your comment.

Artist and albumartist are different contributor types. And as they aren't
identical neither they're three different in this case. It's probably
related to the VA searching issue I'm currently trying to understand: if I
have a compilation with an album artist, and a track artist is identical
to the album artist, they show up once. But if there's a track artist
which is different, they show up twice. It thus makes sense to consider
them different contributors.

However, if Elvis made a guest appearance on one track on an Elvis
Costello album where Elvis Costello is defined as the album artist on
each track, or Elvis Costello happened to be the name of the Band that
Elvis played in, then the count of the artists on the album should be
either the number of artists on the album, or 1 for the album artist.
 Either way, but not both!

What about the composer? Would you consider him a contributor or not?

Maybe only the wording is wrong and we're not talking about Artists here,
but Contributors. Or the count is wrong as it does not only count the
Artist, but the other contributors too. Anyway we change it I'm sure
people would complain, as eg. classical music often isn't catalogued by
the artist (solist? orchestra? conductor?) but by the composer etc.

2008-01-12 Thread Michael Herger
The log file had reached 1gb and was too large to look at so could get

My library contains 1500 flac albums and I've noticed that when I
action a full clear and rescan SC7 becomes unstable (locks up) for a
long period of time before it starts actually scanning my music
folders. I am guessing that it's clearing the database cache during
 this time.

I think it's clearing the artwork cache, which is a bit more work to do

Perhaps my attempts at humor were not understood or appreciated.

Ahm... I interpreted it as a parody of what will be going on in our support
department, sorry. Your _question_ has been drowned in too much humor, I guess.

Yes, I do have my files on a network drive. Win XP? Yes. As a
service? Um... I dunno. But it worked before.

Can you start/stop SC7 from the tray icon (bottom right, left to the clock)?
Then it's in application mode. If you don't see menu items to do so, then it's
run as a service. Which means it's run _before_ you log on to Windows. Thus it
doesn't know about your mapped drives (because they aren't mapped yet, and
because it's not _you_ running it, but the system user).

In SC7 there's a tool in the SqueezeCenter Start menu entry to change this
behaviour.

BTW: if you want to use a UNC path, then it's \\RedSavina\Music with
backslashes.

2008-01-13 Thread Michael Herger
Lol Oh dear, sorry about that. Yes I had installed it, although in my
defence it was to support Trackstat and I hadn't realised there would
 be other side effects.

It's a feature, not a side-effect. But it's an optional feature, so you can
turn it off.

Just out of interest, what are the db numbers supposed to represent?
They appear to be negative, which doesn't seem very intuitive.

That's physics, and I never understood it :-).

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] CS7 upgrade problems

2008-01-13 Thread Michael Herger
name resolution is OK. Pandora and RadioTime also work fine when the
player is connected to SqueezeNetwork, it only fails when connected to
local SqueezeCenter. So I guess it's not as simple as some network
 configuration setting screwed...

Try increasing the Radio Station Timeout in Settings/Advanced/Networking to
eg. 15 seconds.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Wrong anchors delivered for albums where artist and albumartist are different

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
 Filed bug 6609 on this:

No need to start a thread once the bug is filed. This only risks to scatter
around the discussion. Better start a thread first - some bugs are solved by
explanation ;-)

Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Artist counting on album info screen

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
ALBUMARTIST is imho mapped to BAND, as does eg. mp3tag as well.
mp3tag is my main tag editor. The author did change a recent developer build
(v2.39h) to make TPE2 map to ALBUMARTIST. However, this change was reverted
a couple of days later (v2.39i). ALBUMARTIST is a TXXX frame. They are two
 different things.

TXXX means no standard tag. It's whatever you want to call it. Create a
MYVERYOWNTAG and it will be stored in TXXX.

mp3tag is imho mapping ALBUMARTIST to BAND (TPE2) because it doesn't officially
exist. See second (edited!) posting:
http://www.anytag.de/forums/index.php?showtopic=6667

However, most software maps considers BAND to be the album artist for
grouping and display, rather than a contributing band.

You've changed your mind since your previous posting?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Stability problems with new default skin

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
This ONLY occurs on the home page. If I'm browsing artists/albums, no
problems... If I leave it on the home page
(http://localhost.localdomain:9000/) then it appears to be stuck in a
 state of loading

Do you still see this issue after you have
- installed the latest build
- cleared your browser's cache
- fully reloaded the page in your browser?

We have seen similar reports recently which then were solved by updating.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] How to stop SC7?

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
The problem is that I don't see a way to stop Slimsever any more.
Slimtray just offers Open Squeezecenter, Go to LogiTech Web Site and
 Exit.

You'll have to use Windows' service manager.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Time format - not configurable

I checked it but the player screensaver is set to 'Date and time
screensaver'. In the player section there is no option to change the
 time format though.

Sorry, it's not in the player settings... Settings-Plugins(Extras)-Date
Time-Settings

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] How to stop SC7?

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
As I mentioned, I am running SqueezeCenter (the latest nightly) on two
different machine. One is running as a service and the other is not.
How did that happen? How can I switch back and forth between running as
a service and running as an application?

Start - SqueezeCenter - Manage startup or something

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] How to stop SC7?

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
 I found Component Manager.

Just to be sure: it's the service manager you need.

Is it possible to run SqueezeCenter the way
it was in version 6.x, controlling it from SlimTray?

The short answer is: no. The long answer can be found in a thread where we were
discussing pro and contra running SC as a service. As on Vista the user can't
manage services any more we already had removed it from that menu in the case
the user was running Vista. Now we decided to do it the right way, removing all
those conditional menus, as it failed for some users on XP as well. It's a step
backwards for some, but leads to less confusion for those encountering the
issue (which often are less than power users).

a Windows forum, but after reading about running SC as application vs
 service I'm not any wiser.

Service: can't access your mapped drives, can't be managed by non privileged
users, not at all in Vista; but it starts without the need to log on.

App: need to log on, but sees the system as you see it, with all the mapped
drives etc.

I often have this MIP/SC startup order issue (and have read a few
others do too) and would prefer to just start the two applications
 myself.

Then have it run as an application.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Time format - not configurable

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
I like the time format to be 24 hour notation but none of the format
change result in a different display of the time format when the SB is
 off.

The screensaver can overwrite SC's setting. You'll find it in the player
settings.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Sc Mip

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
However, SC does not accept mixes passed to it from MIP. MIP gives
Error sending playlist to player. If I change the MIP Send to
preference to Winamp (or any other) it functions correctly.

On which of your systems is this? Is SC running as a service or app?

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
Is this change just in documentation/discussions or have you actually
changed something in the code that I should adapt to ?

No, it all should be covered by the strings changes we did. All you'd have
to do is update your documentation.

(don't tell anyone, but in the code the menu items are still called
plugins something)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Favorites

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
Are there other valid db: link formats? eg, for artist name search?

Yes. A quick grep resultet in some of the following:
db:contributor.namesearch=%s
db:genre.namesearch=%s
db:year.id=%s

There are very likely more, eg. for all of the Schemas defined.

Would this produce a heirarchy of albums/songs? Can more than one
search param be put in a url? eg.
 db:album.titlesearch=Greatest%20Hitsartist.name=Genesis?

AFAICT no.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Minor Feature Request - No scan on install

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
I frequently reinstall squeezecenter from scratch and while I love the
install-wizard-like prompts, asking where your music is stored,
playlists stored, etc... I do wish I had the option of NOT scanning my
music right away and here's why:

Hmm... the wizard should only be run the very first time you run SC. On
updates it usually isn't needed, unless you remove your settings.

If this isn't the case for you, then we'd need some more information about
your system.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Mapped network drive Windows UNC music path problem

2008-01-14 Thread Michael Herger
 1) I should run as a service.

This depends on your use case. I do prefer it.

 2) The Music Folder (under Basic Settings) should be
 //RedSavina/media/music instead of R:\Music.

Just make sure you use backslashes instead. And you run the service under
your user account (the option is given in that setup dialog)

 3) I should get rid of old playlists which may have had both types of
 paths.

Or clean them up.

 4) I need to do a full Rescan before my problem will be fully
 resolved.

Yes.
