Re: [Bf-committers] Release planning update - Blender 3.0 later

2021-06-14 Thread Jacob Merrill via Bf-committers
First off I want to say thank you.

I have been using EEVEE render for realtime / teaching physics and coding
and the progress is amazing,
but there are 2 things that need priority for the release or at least to be
placed on the roadmap.

there has been talk about open subdivision living 'after the stack' on the
GPU - but also being available as a modifier (slower - but compatible)

I believe the same concept should apply to GPU armature skinning - or
slower but 'stack compatible' - armature modifier

also - https://developer.blender.org/T88331 - alpha hash has some issues
for realtime that are easily amended . ---

One last follow up:

I did notice that spamassassin was tossing some occasional errors, and have
restarted the service. It indeed could have been a cause for some, but not
all users, being problematic with delivery.

So,

Aaron and I did some quick tests, but for some reason it just started
working again, even after he updated his settings back. I did resave the
filter page for the list, which could have corrected something perhaps, but
other than over the weekend when Ton and Francesco poked at the lists,
nothing has changed in at least weeks since Aaron last mailed on June 4.

TL;DR: Something could have accidentally broken over the last few days, but
possibly worked itself out. Poke you have problems sending to the lists!

Thank you!

Hi,

Indeed, the mailing list mime vs plain text appears to be at the root of
the problem.

Will see if I can figure out exactly why! In the meantime, you may want to
update your settings to MIME instead of plain text.

Re: [Bf-committers] Buildbot Update - June 14, 2021

2021-06-14 Thread Ray Molenkamp via Bf-committers
May I suggest moving the change log to the bottom of
the page (or even better its own page) ?

While I absolutely love having the change log, having
users/devs scroll though it before they can learn
how to use the build infra structure seems less than
ideal, given the change log is not going to get any
shorter over time they may even bail out thinking
they are on the wrong page.

[Bf-committers] Release planning update - Blender 3.0 later

2021-06-14 Thread Ton Roosendaal via Bf-committers

Hi everyone,

In discussions on the coming 3.0 release, I witnessed a need to have a
couple of (IRL) workshops with core contributors in order to solve
pressing design issues. We have to wrap up 2.8 UI work, review how it
went, and fix some things that went bad.

My goal would be to work on a clear guideline doc for how Blender 3.0 is
meant to work, as a lead for all ongoing projects to align with. That
will also empower the module teams to schedule their work. It would  be
preferred if we keep the 3.0 versions work backwards compatible for two
years (Py API included, with as exception the new GPU module).

I also think we should avoid to include big new ambitious goals to 3.0,
aside of projects we planned to tackle already (node systems,
animation/rigging, physics/particles/hair real-time editing).

With the pandemic coming to an end, I think that we should be able to
travel and meet again late July or August. Workshops can happen then or
in September.

This puts the 3.0 planning under a lot of pressure... I also think we
have to allow the developers to schedule a summer holiday, to relieve
Corona stress and to give everyone time to come back together again -
after having been separated in lockdown so long.

For these reasons I propose to shift the 3.0 release planning with two
months, to late October. The asset project would love the extra time,
and CyclesX then can also be in the release.

I've discussed this with the admins and several of the core developers.
I think there's a wide support for this decision, but please speak out
here if there are pressing other viewpoints to revise the planning.

Thanks,

-Ton-
