I think Colin Smith was going to look at that, but I've no idea what's been
 done.

They've delayed the discontinuation of hosted apps retirement from September 1
to some unannounced date later in 2012, partially because their servers don't
support the installation of MediaWiki version 1.17 and later. I think it
probably makes sense to wait until they have that resolved before migrating.
See:

http://sourceforge.net/p/forge/community-docs/Migrating%20MediaWiki%20from%20Hosted%20Apps/

I'll continue to monitor the progress. Cheers.

That's the idea, to keep support for as long as possible. I'll tinker with it
on ML. I suppose we may have to find a SL user to do the release for it. I do
think there can be incompatibilities with w/ Xcode even when not using the
various ML UI and social media updates. I think also they probably want to make
everyone start using those. I don't fully understand the code differences.

I agree re Apple. Latest OS updates concern integrating Mac w/ iTunes, iPhones.
Not the same orientation as the TeX world, to say the least!

In my opinion, BibDesk needs to transition to Xcode 4 as soon as possible, if
there's any hope of continuing development. Requiring compilation with tools
that can't be installed on the last two major OS releases is going to cause
trouble down the road.

Compiling with Xcode 4 10.7 or 10.8 SDK doesn't necessarily mean that 10.6
support will be dropped, but it does require dropping 10.5 support. It's not
as if older versions of BibDesk would suddenly stop working on 10.5, anyway…or
even 10.6.

I agree, and basically it's unavoidable. So probably this will be the last
release that supports 10.5. It won't be much of a loss, and a lot less pain. I
am not sure how 10.6 support is on Xcode 4? There are still several things that
can go wrong, such as library version incompatibilities, when the 10.6 SDK is
not used; right now we're using the 10.5 SDK otherwise it won't run on 10.5.
Has anyone tested whether BibDesk can run on 10.6 when it is built using the
10.7 SDK? And then there's 64 bits, which I would like to get when 10.5 is
dropped, but I have no idea how to get that compatibility on the embedded
frameworks.

For now I will try to do a release somewhere in the coming days.

BTW, Another issue is the Wiki. Has anyone looked at it? I believe it will stop
working next week...

10.5 SDK otherwise it won't run on 10.5. Has anyone tested whether BibDesk
can run on 10.6 when it is built using the 10.7 SDK?

I can try this on 10.8. I'm not sure if I kept a 10.7 partition around. The
main thing I worry about is the library version, as you say. There are
workarounds for that, but they're not fun.

And then there's 64 bits, which I would like to get when 10.5 is dropped, but
I have no idea how to get that compatibility on the embedded frameworks.

I've got my own BibDesk tree building under Xcode 4 with 64 bit support, and it
wasn't too bad. The questionable parts are btparse and yaz. I think yaz is
okay, insofar as it compiles pretty cleanly under 64-bit, and isn't used that
much. I had to go through btparse more carefully and fix warnings there, and
I'm still not sure it'll actually handle 64-bit data sizes. With the way the
parser is structured, that shouldn't really be a problem.

For now I will try to do a release somewhere in the coming days.

BTW, Another issue is the Wiki. Has anyone looked at it? I believe it will
 stop working next week...

I think Colin Smith was going to look at that, but I've no idea what's been
done.

OK, tested building in a 10.8 virtual machine against the 10.7 SDK. 300
warnings, but it does build and run on 10.6.8 as x86_64, which is good news.

[Bibdesk-users] nightly builds down

2012-08-21 Thread Adam R. Maxwell
Nightly builds are down until I can get the script switched to use my dropbox
account for hosting them.

Since we've lost the nightlies, it would be nice to get a release out ASAP
because of that data loss bug that occurs on 10.7/10.8.

Sorry to hear. Hope you won't have to go through what I had to with
my iBook (new logic board every 3 month or so for the same issue,
took a month each time to send to the UK for repair, until I finally
 gave up).

Ouch! I've known other people with iBook problems, but not that bad.
I have a Pismo PowerBook (from 2000, shipped with OS 9) that I use as
an MP3 player in the garage; it runs 10.4 just fine. I'm typing this
a 6-year old PowerBook G4, which has also been trouble free, in spite
of coffee and beer being dumped into the keyboard (though not at the
same time!). It's being upgraded to an iMac next week, and hopefully
that's as solid as my old PPC Macs.

Great! So please test the nightly builds, so we can work towards the
next release. I updated the release notes for the next nightly, so you
can see what to test in particular.
