[Ontbirds]Bonaparte's Gulls, Sparrow Lake, Muskoka

2005-06-28 Thread Eleanor Kee Wellman
While out photographing common terns on Long Island, Sparrow Lake, I saw two
Bonaparte's gulls at the water's edge of the ring-billed gull colony. They
appear to be first year birds. They are in neither first winter nor adult
non-breeding plumage. I have several pictures which I will forward to the
OFO website.

Two Caspian Terns also seen loafing.

Sparrow Lake is west of Hwy 11, north of the Severn River. The colonies are
accessible by boat only.

I have been watching and listening to a Northern Mockingbird in the
cable and transformer yard just to the south of the Toronto Hydro
building at 28 Underwriters Road (west side) for about a month now. It
starts it's wonderful variety of calls every morrning and usually can
be heard until the early afternoon every day. It can be spotted on the
lighting poles in the yard or on the roofs of the surroundig
buildings. Access to the property is restricted to employees only but
it can be easily seen from the road. You will most likely here it
first as it sings all day long.

Underwriters Road is one block west of Birchmount running south off of
Lawrence. The Hydro building is half way down the road on your right.

This evening (Tuesday 28) Dean Ware found a female Ruff (Reave) at
Hillman marsh east of the boardwalk. There were also 3 Little Gulls.

To get to Hillman marsh, go east on Oak Street from Leamington a few
kms.
