[Ontbirds]Long Sault - Red-Necked Grebe

2006-11-07 Thread Trevor Wendy Heuvel
Birded the Long Sault Parkway this morning between 7:30-8:30. Spotted a
RED-NECKED GREBE between Hoople and Dickinson Islands, on the north side of
the parkway - fairly close. Thought I saw a pair of red-necked grebes last
weekend in the same location, but they were too far out in the bay to
confirm. This one was alone.
Other birds along the parkway included: 1000+ CANADIAN GEESE, 100 GADWALL,
an AMERICAN WIGEON, 50+/- COMMON MERGANSERS, 25 MALLARDS. Within the last
week I have also seen a few BUFFLEHEAD and HOODED MERGANSERS, but none this
morning.

DIRECTIONS: The Long Sault Parkway is located south of Highway 2 between
Long Sault and Ingelside. Entrances to the Parkway are off of Hwy 2 directly
in Long Sault (exit 778 off of the 401) and just east of Ingleside. There
are no entrance fees this time of year.

Good birding,
Wendy Heuvel.

[Ontbirds]Long Pt Waterfowl and a Request for Sharp Eyes

2006-11-07 Thread Ron Ridout
Tundra Swans have moved into the Long Pt area in large numbers over the
past week with many easily observed in the Big Creek NWA. In addition,
several thousand ducks of a number of species can be seen on Long Pt.
Inner Bay just off the Port Rowan overlook or from the overlook at BSC's
HQ property. Interestingly, while many species of waterfowl are here in
good numbers, both species of scaup are so far, to a large extent,
conspicuously absent. With scaup in mind, BSC biologists have the
following request of any Ontbirders living in the area of Strathroy.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Long Point Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Fund (LPWWRF) / Bird
Studies Canada implanted a number of Lesser and Greater scaup with
satellite transmitters during the spring of 2006 at Long Point and
Hamilton Harbor to determine their migration pathways and chronology.
Many of these birds are now en route or have returned to the lower Great
Lakes region; their movements and current satellite locations can be
viewed on the Scaup Tracker page of the LPWWRF website
http://www.bsc-eoc.org/lpbo/lpwwrf.html. Recent data indicates that one
of these birds (affectionately named Howard) is on the Strathroy
sewage lagoons, southwest of town on Pike Road. LPWWRF researchers are
very interested to know if anyone has observed this bird and can provide
a report on its general behavior. This bird can be identified by the
relatively inconspicuous black antennae protruding vertically from it's
rear-end. If anyone has information on this bird please contact Dr.
Shannon Badzinski - LPWWRF Scientist - at 519-586-3531 ext 220 /
toll-free at 888-448-2473 or by email ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

[Ontbirds]Lapland Longspur, various geese, etc. - Ottawa

2006-11-07 Thread Tony Beck

Hello Ontbirders

It was a bit cooler and breezier today. But, it seems the birds are
still arriving.

This morning at Andrew Hayden Park, most of the usual characters were
still there with increased numbers of Canada Geese and gulls. Most
interesting was one Brant feeding with the canadas on the lawn between
the bandstand and the playground. Also, one Purple Finch flew overhead.
Directions courtesy Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/orwo14.htm

In a grassy field north of Brophy Road, (behind #4700) an interesting
mix of geese foraged with 3 Clydesdale Horses. They included 1 Greater
White-fronted Goose and 31 Snow Geese.
The mix of Snow Geese included only 2 Greater and 1 juvenile
White-morph Lesser. The remaining 28 were all Blue Morph Lesser
including 6 juveniles.
Directions courtesy Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/stony7.htm

In a harvested field east of the corner of Eagleson and Akins (south of
Fallowfield) a flock of about 400 Horned Larks included small numbers
of Snow Bunting and Lapland Longspurs. The birds typically caused much
frustration as they swirled into the air, back down, only to disappear
into the furrows. Although I only cast my eyes on three longspurs, when
they took to the air I could hear several calling - persistence
perseverance helps.

Point Pelee wind turbine proposal axed

Brian Cross
Windsor Star

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

LEAMINGTON - A surge of opposition has diverted a=20
plan to put wind-powered turbines on the Point Pelee peninsula.

Boris Vondrus of Advantis Energy confirmed on=20
Monday his company will respect the wishes=20
expressed quite passionately at a Saturday night=20
public meeting and look for a more bird-friendly=20
location for the turbines. We think we can find=20
a solution a lot of people will be positively pleased with.

His Toronto-based company set up the meeting=20
Saturday to present its 10-megawatt project=20
employing four tall turbines erected between=20
Mersea Road B and C, a couple of kilometres north of Point Pelee National=
Park.

More than 50 people showed up.

We told him it's a terrible plan for wind=20
turbines, and he backed off it right away, we're=20
quite impressed with his integrity, said Mike=20
Malone, the owner of Pelee Wings Nature Store. He=20
said most environmental people are opposed to the=20
project going anywhere on that Pelee peninsula,=20
stretching between Wheatley Harbour and Leamington Harbour.

There's this tremendous movement of birds back=20
and forth outside of the park, said Malone, who=20
said he was impressed with Vondrus's response.

To a lot of us, it's really good news. We have=20
an ethical developer here who seeks out the opinion of the people.

Vondrus said his company will look for a new site=20
where the wind load is strong enough to make the=20
project, costing $16 million to $18 million, feasible.

A much larger plan to put 119 wind turbines in=20
Lake Erie west of Point Pelee, one kilometre from=20
shore, resulted in a massive protest in=20
Leamington and Kingsville. Last month, Minister=20
of Natural Resources David Ramsay announced he=20
would not allow the bed of Lake Erie -- all of it=20
on the Canadian side

Hello Ont. Birders,
My tour group had a great morning birding the trails off Highway 60 in
Algonquin Park. Along Arowhon Rd. and the old railroad bed to Wolf Howl
Pond, we had 2 Three-toed Woodpeckers and 2 Black-backed Woodpeckers. A
total of 7 Boreal Chickadees and 6 Gray Jays were observed in the same area.
Finch activity was active, with 250+ Pine Siskin, 150 American Goldfinch,
100+ Purple Finch and both White-winged and Red Crossbill. At Spruce Bog
Trail we found, 2 Gray Jay at the parking lot and a male Spruce Grouse on
the opposite side of the highway. Along the Lake Opeongo Rd. we observed 2
Gray Jays and at Opeongo Lake there was a late immature Double-crested
Cormorant.

Hello Ontbirders

By braving the drizzle this morning, we were rewarded with a few
interesting birds.

12 Brant were feeding with the canadas on the lawn of Andrew Hayden
Park, often fairly close to Carling Avenue and the bicycle paths. One
bird later separated from the group. But, remained feeding in the area.

After an unproductive hike along the trail off Kerwin Road, at around
noon, upon returning to our vehicles at the entrance to the trail, we
saw a beautiful male Black-backed Woodpecker. It flew in from the
opposite side of the road, worked a tree for less than a minute, then
flew southeast deep into the woods.

There were no detectable finch flights this morning.
