[Ontbirds]Purple Sandpiper Cobourg harbour Oct.26

2008-10-26 Thread M. Bain
The first-winter Purple Sandpiper, not seen yesterday in the heavy rain, is
feeding on the rotting algae on the mudbanks on the west side of Cobourg
harbour this morning, Sunday Oct.26 - being viewed by several birders around
11am. It keeps company with a lone Dunlin and is right out in the open,
rather than crawling around rocks, giving excellent views.
When I saw it just now it was about halfway along the west headland - from
the parking lot on the west side of the harbour walk out on the headland and
you will see tracks through the vegetation that will take you down to the
mudflats at this level. It doesn't seem at all wary but photographers were
giving it respectful room.
The Snowy Owl was not seen today but may well still be around. A single
Brant was in the harbour 2 days ago.

Directions:
Exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and drive south to the harbour.
Drive round the north edge of the harbour for free parking on the west side,
and walk out on the west headland.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa - White-fronted Goose, Cackling Geese, Lapland Longspur, Golden Plover, etc.

2008-10-26 Thread Tony Beck

Hello Ontbirders

We had an excellent day after some miserable weather yesterday.
It started early at Ottawa Beach (Andrew Haydon Park east) with a
relatively tight flock of 11 Cackling Geese mixed with the Canadas.
Also present was a Blue Goose. A flyover of a single adult winter
Bonaparte's Gull was mildly interesting.
When we returned at noon, there was an adult Greater White-fronted
Goose in with the Canadas.

In a harvested farm field along Akins Road there was a tight flock of
42 American Golden Plovers.

Along Brownlee Road, we had a flock of 6 Lapland Longspurs.
In this general area there were several small flocks of Horned Larks,
American Pipits, a flock of about 150 Snow Buntings, 5 various
plumaged Rough-legged Hawks and a male Northern Harrier.

[Ontbirds]50+ Black Scoters in Fort Erie

2008-10-26 Thread Marcia Jacklin
Hi

On Saturday Tim Seburn I saw more than 50 Black Scoters close to the Fort in
Fort Erie. This is where Lake Erie flows into the Niagara River. We had a large
number of Black Scoters around this time last year too. In addition there were
6 White-winged Scoters and Tim spotted 1 Surf Scoter. Also several small rafts
of Long-tailed Ducks and Buffleheads.

Further west at the end of Kraft Road we saw about 20 Gadwall; 12 American
Wigeon and 1 Scoter sp.

Today Sunday Rick Stockton and I counted at least 55 Black Scoter.

[Ontbirds]Presqu'ile Purples

2008-10-26 Thread Don Shanahan
Ontbirders
This morning there were two Purple Sandpipers on Sebastopol Island (formerly a
part of Gull Island). The birds could usually be seen by scope looking north
from the west end of Gull Island. There was also a Snowy Owl on Gull and then
nearby High Bluff Island. A good mix of shorebirds is still frequenting the
area.
Because of the Presqu'ile duck hunt, access to Gull Island for non-hunters is
limited to Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
The way to Presqu'ile Provincial Park is well-marked south of Brighton.

Falling BP and medium S winds meant few migrating raptors along the lakefront.
Indeed 2 very distant Accipiters passed through to the north. During the
morning an imm.Peregrine Falcon flew in low over the wetland, flew around our
poled owl, then flew back to the east. At noonhour this same bird came across,
continuiung onward to the west.

At 0900EST 12 Eastern bluebirds flew through. We did enjoy watching a two-way
harassing between an adult Peregrine Falcon and an imm. N.Harrier.

Other non-raptors were few, as the wind was keeping everything low.--- several
Yellow-rumped Warblers, 3 Greater yellowlegs, ruby-crowned kinglet, swamp
sparrow, song sparrow. We have had no white-crowned sparrows for a week.

[Ontbirds]Ottawa - Scoters

2008-10-26 Thread Brian Mortimer
Today Sunday Oct 26 at 9:00 am there was a female Black Scoter on Dow's Lake
on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Later in the day, at 3:00 pm there was a male
White-winged Scoter giving good views at the big pond on Earl Armstrong Road
near High Road. Both ducks were accompanied by a mix of mergansers and
Ringed-necked ducks.

Dow's Lake is accessible from the Queen Elizabeth Drive way or on foot
through the Arboretum. Earl Armstrong runs east from River Road south of the
Ottawa airport. The pond mentioned is near its extreme eastern end.

[Ontbirds]Red-necked Phalarope, Little Gull Cobourg harbour Oct.26

2008-10-26 Thread M. Bain
The Purple Sandpiper is still feeding on the algae at the SW corner of
Cobourg harbour, but just before 3pm a moulting juv. Red-necked Phalarope
flew in from the lake and is bobbing around at the edge of the algae near
the Purple. A winter adult Little Gull joined a group of about 35 Boneys
flying in and out of the harbour.
The phalarope is a difficult one and caused considerable discussion among
the fairly august group of birders assembled - the bill seems a bit too
thick for Red-necked, but no pale at the base, and there seems to be a lot
of unstreaked pale gray in the scapulars, but the general consensus remains
Red-necked rather than Red.
I hate to leave the harbour in case something else amazing flies in off the
storm-tossed lake.

Directions:
Exit Hwy.401 at Division Street, Exit 474, and drive south to the harbour.
Drive round the north edge of the harbour for free parking on the west side,
and walk out on the west headland.

seen during the day. Winds were strong and brisk from the east-southeast.

Raptor Observations:
Although not quite at the pace of yesterday’s flight, the migration today
was perhaps surprisingly good given the conditions. Along with another
decent TV flight and good Red-tail showing, onlookers today were treated to
views of a couple of Golden Eagles and two Rough-legs including the first
dark morph of the season.

Non-raptor Observations:
A group of seven Tundra Swans were the first of this species to be seen at
the watch this fall. Other sightings of note were a Blackpoll Warbler and a
tardy Monarch.

[Ontbirds]Ottawa - Long-billed Dowitcher, Snowy Owl, etc.

2008-10-26 Thread Tony Beck

Hello again Ontbirders.

The good weather we enjoyed this morning was short lived with rains
starting again this evening.
However, a couple of quick checks late this afternoon at the Moodie
Drive Quarry Ponds produced a few interesting sightings.
There were no hunters nearby, and thousands of geese came in low,
providing a delightful late evening flight of waterfowl.
Duck diversity continues with good numbers of several species
including Ruddy Duck, Ring-necked Duck and Hooded Merganser.
Smaller numbers include Green-winged Teal, Common Goldeneye, both
Scaup, and both larger Mergansers.

A single female Black Scoter was of interest.
The Long-billed Dowitcher is still present, hanging out with 3
Greater Yellowlegs.
A juvenile Snowy Owl was in the field opposite the Moodie Drive gate.
As light diminished, it flew west, flushing the gulls feeding in the
field.

[Ontbirds]Timiskaming - Fox Sparrows

2008-10-26 Thread Michael Werner
Hello Ontbirders. Thought that it was worth a mention that I had three Fox
Sparrows feeding in my yard under some spruce and fir trees today with a small
flock of about 15 Juncos.
I live in the bush, in Timiskaming District, half way between New Liskeard
(now Temiskaming Shores) and Elk Lake along Hwy 65.

Cheers,
Michael Werner
