[Ontbirds]Black-throated Gray Warbler-Rondeau Park
Hi all, A little more info on the Black-throated Gray Warbler at Rondeau. Thanks to Irene Woods for getting a word out at time of our sighting. About 09:30 this morning, Jim Burk and I were surprised to find a Black-throated Gray Warbler feeding in Red Cedars just outside the Rondeau campground boundary just inside the park gate. It was frequenting the intersection of Centre and Bowman Streets in the cottage section. It moved from tree to tree, exclusively in Red Cedars or White Pines. It has a chip note vaguely similar to a Yellow-rumped Warbler. I heard this long before we saw the bird, but I did not realize what it was! Yellow-rumps are commonly in this area in the winter so that is what I thought it was. There were no Yellow-rumps here this morning. The bird will likely stay in the area. There is a great feeder setup at the end of this street near the park gate. This will be a new record for the Rondeau birding area! Photos were obtained. Directions: Rondeau Park is off H#3 via Kent Rd. #15. Go into the park, and immediately turn left before the campground. The road curves around to the intersection of Bowman Centre St. Check Red Cedars in this area. Park gate fee applies. Blake A. [Ontbirds]Snowy Owl, Keswick
A heavily-barred Snowy Owl was preening in a field on Yonge St. south of Ravenshoe Rd. around 1:30 this afternoon. There were two flocks of Snow Buntings, of around 10 and 40 birds respectively, a handful of tree sparrows and a non-male Harrier in the same general area. From the corner of Leslie St. and Ravenshoe Rd. proceed west on Ravenshoe to where it meets the dead-end stub of Yonge St. at a T intersection. Turn left (south) and drive almost to the end, past the last shed. The bird was on the east side, in the snow covered field. It was five spans, so to speak, from the south end of the irrigator, and well back in the field. [Ontbirds]Ajax AVOCET;BLACKBIRDS, NORTHERN GOSHAWK
The AVOCET was still there today, Nov.23---once on the pedestrian bridge, people today found it either towards the lakefront in the lagoon OR to the north up-river. Please refer to my Nov.22 e-mail for directions. A cloudy morning with light W wind, -4C to 4C, and a TUV=2.5, but a falling BP was not a good sign for migrating raptors along the lakefront. However, a low-flying immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK in the 11 o'clock hour was great. The watch always has the usual camaraderie amongst observers, in spite of few migrants--only 2 other raptors (Red-taileds) came through.---SEE TABLE BELOW. AMONG THE NON-RAPTORS--- 4 WILD TURKEYS in the corn field east of Hall's Rd.; 20+ WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were briefly seen alongside the roadway; 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS fed on the path near the platform all morning; AMERICAN PIPITS were heard flying over; female PURPLE FINCH; white-throated sparrow. [Ontbirds]Niagara River - California Gull
Thanks to Jim Pawlicki for getting the word out about this. Early this morning, Betsy and I found a second-winter CALIFORNIA GULL from the Adam beck overlook on the Ontario side of the Niagara River (the power plants). We watched it for a while in flight and as it lit briefly several times on the water to feed, becoming more and more certain of the identification. Eventually, it landed on the water for a while at the base of the red cliff (left of the NY power dam) and after that, eventually landed on a rock, finally giving us a good view of its pale grayish legs. This gull looks very much like a second-winter Herring Gull (HEGU) with a clear gray back, white rump, and all-blackish tail. Some key differences are: - this bird is smaller with a smaller more rounded head; it was even smaller then a Lesser Black-backed Gull (direct comparison). However, it is larger than a Ring-billed Gull. - the gray of the back is slightly darker. - the bill is pale gray with a sharply demarcated black tip (some second-winter HEGUs have a similar bill pattern). - the legs are pale grayish, lacking pink tones, though there may be some slight pinkish in the feet. - there is a slight hindcollar formed by heavier streaking (also shown by some HEGUs). - the eyes are dark (as are the eyes of some 2w HEGUs) Early this morning there were quite a few large gulls at the power plants but by 10:00, many had departed. When we returned in the afternoon (2-2:30), there were very few large gulls and we could not find the California Gull. Other birds at Adam Beck were one first-winter GLAUCOUS GULL, one adult THAYER'S GULL, three ICELAND GULLS, and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Above Niagara Falls, there were many resting large gulls as well as a good-sized feeding flock below the control gates. We had one, possibly two, second-winter GLAUCOUS GULLS, one juvenile THAYER'S GULL, and only one or two ICELAND GULLS. An adult PEREGRINE FALCON was perched out on the large flat rock island. I looked for but could not find any Purple Sandpipers. We never made it downstream of the barge where there were also many resting large gulls. DIRECTIONS: The power plants are in the Town of Lewiston, NY and Queenston, Ont. a little south of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. The control gates are about a mile above Niagara Falls. Good birding!
