The most interesting reports from the past week involved breeding or
potentially breeding species.

The discovery of two adult TRUMPETER SWANS with four young on the Jock River
near Carleton Place on June 13 created some local excitement. Most recently
spotted on the evening of the 17th, they are not always easy to see among
the vegetation near the bridge on 9th Line Beckwith. Their fidelity to this
site seems to indicate that they nested nearby, and would make this the
first breeding record for the Ottawa-Gatineau 50 km area.

Many reports of GREAT EGRETS have come in from both the Ontario and Quebec
sides of the Deschenes rapids since the middle of April. Since June 11, at
least three have been seen flying around and disappearing into the
vegetation among the Ring-billed Gull colony on the islet in the rapids.
Although this may just be a roosting site, possible nesting activity cannot
be ruled out. If this is confirmed, we have yet another first breeding
record for the 50K.

Breeding evidence for YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was also noted in the Cumberland
area - an adult was heard earlier in the month, and on the 15th one was seen
carrying a fecal sac. (The specific location is not given, as this is a rare
local breeding species). It's been an interesting season for Yellow-billed
Cuckoos in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, with reports from widespread locations
including Gatineau Park and the Low-Poltimore area in Quebec, and the
Shirley's Bay and Cumberland areas in Ontario.

An excursion along Paugan Rd. from Poltimore to Low on the 13th was
successful for many breeding species including pairs of RED-SHOULDERED and
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, a singing male OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, and other
territorial passerines.

Other recent reports of note were three RED KNOTS in breeding plumage and a
few SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS at the St. Albert sewage lagoons on the 14th.
The Embrun lagoons also hosted a few SEMIPALMATED and WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS and a BLACK TERN on the 12th.

Thank you - Good Birding!

[Ontbirds] 1 Red Knot @ North Bay Prov. Park, east of Presquile P.P. in Prince Edward Co. (yesterday)

2010-06-18 Thread Andrew Keaveney

Hey Ontbirders. Well, the title says it all.

I put another tick on my Provincial Park list yesterday by visiting North Bay
Prov. Park. There is no camping at the park and it just opened for the season
today (Friday) according to one local I met. I had never heard of this park
before, but upon checking it out it's very similar to Presquile and Sandbanks,
though smaller.

It might be worth a visit to birders in the area looking for shorebirds as I
found a Red Knot along the inner bay shoreline feeding with a few Semipalmated
Sandpipers and Killdeer.

Year bird and definately a nice surprise.

Directions: North Bay Provincial Park is found along the north shore of Lake
Ontario in Prince Edward County. I went in the 'wrong' entrance so I can't
help you there.

Cheers,

Andrew Keaveney

[Ontbirds] Acadian Flycatcher Hooded warb...@happy Valley

2010-06-18 Thread Dave Worthington
This morning while exploring the Happy Valley area and taking some of the
trails I came across a Acadian Flycatcher and a Hooded Warbler. Both were
singing continually so were fairly easy to the locate. Also a highlight for me
was seeing a Red Eft (juvenile form of Red-spotted Newt) that was seen along
the trail.
From the parking lot where the trails start the Flycatcher was seen by taking
the trail behind the large sign and walking for about 5 minutes to where the
trail runs along side a small creek. The bird sang continually while I was in
the area.
The warbler (a bright male) was seen by taking the other trail from the parking
lot, starting between 2 cement posts. Walk up the slope for ~100+ metres to the
top and the bird was singing on the right hand side. It was in about 50m from
the path.

Direction; 400 Hwy N to King Sideroad, W to 7th Concession, N to where it stops
at 16th Sideroad. Turn right and follow this road for ~1km until it ends at a
cul-d-sac where the well marked trails start.

[Ontbirds] Correction on Red Knot location North Beach (Bay) Prov. Park

2010-06-18 Thread Bree, David (MNR)
Hello Andy and all, just as a point of clarification:

That's North Beach Provincial Park, follow hwy 33 south of Consecon and
after 10 minutes or so follow the signs and take the right hand turn to
the official entrance of the park.

Cool sighting, it's an area that definitely doesn't get much coverage.

[Ontbirds] Chuck-will's-widow -- Carden Alvar

2010-06-18 Thread Dan Bone
.While participating in the Carden Challenge we heard a single calling
Chuck-will's-widow from 10:45 to 11:00 p.m. The Chuck-will's-widow was calling
when we stopped. Later a Whip-poor-will started calling as well which
emphasised the differences in the two calls. Have video recording of the call.

The bird was on Doyle Road east of Victoria Road (City of Kawartha Lakes Road
#35. It was about 100 meters west of the first bend as you a travelling east
from Victoria Road. The GPS coordinates are 663950 - 4942938 (NAD 83).

Should be worth bonus points on the Carden Challenge.
