[Ontbirds] Mew - Common Gull - Cobourg Harbour - Again
Ontbirders, After posting on 23 March about the Mew Gull at Cobourg Harbour, I received a photo of the spread wing showing the pattern of the primaries taken by Chris McConnell who kindly gave permission to post it on my website. This primary pattern together with the pale mantle suggests it is a Common Gull Larus canus canus. This is a very neat gull and I hope it stays around. http://www.jeaniron.ca/Gulls/2011/mewcobourg.htm Thanks to Margaret Bain, Richard Pope, Kevin McLaughlin and Alan Wormington for information. Directions per Margaret Bain: Exit 474 from Hwy 401 and south on Division Street to the harbour. Drive round the harbour to the west parking lot. Best wishes, Jean Iron Toronto ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Adult Mew Gull at Cobourg Harbour - Photos
Ontbirders, After an absence of several hours the Mew Gull found by Sarah Petrasek returned at 3:50 p.m. and was still there when I left at 5:30. Please see photos: http://www.jeaniron.ca/Gulls/2011/mewcobourg.htm I was unable to get photos of the spread primaries, which will help in subspecific identification. Others were trying so I hope they were successful and will share their photos. Sorry about my incomplete message earlier this afternoon. It went prematurely while trying to get the message out quickly that the Mew Gull was back to help those who had left. Directions per Margaret Bain: Exit 474 from Hwy 401 and south on Division Street to the harbour. Drive round the harbour to the west parking lot. Good birding, Jean Iron Toronto ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Boat-tailed Grackel, Spotted Towhee, Etc. -Monarch Landing-Port Burwell
Birders, The return of cold, winter-like weather, snow, ice-pellets and freezing rain has produced some interesting bird behaviour, gathering some lingering winter birds back in to the feeding areas and adding another rarity to the yard list. A single, male Boat-tailed Grackel was observed feeding early this morning with eight common (bronze) grackels under one of the feeders. It's impressively greater size, larger bill and more rounded head were immediately apparent. It had a yellow eye. The birds fed for 20 to 30 minutes before dispersing, and I haven't seen it again. The male spotted- towhee showed up again down the road after having not been seen in four days. There are still four eastern Towhees around but it takes some hunting. To the north across the road from the Towhees, there is a corn-field, vernal pond, sheltered by trees to the north. There were about 150 ducks of six species here including 36 wood ducks, as well as seven killdeer. A very few redpolls and two pairs of siskins linger at the feeders but almost all of the very numerous winter tree sparrows have headed north while the Juncos are still plentiful . A single female purple finch, a few Rusty blackbirds, cedar waxwings, a single fox sparrow, and two field sparrows also added to the mix of abundant robins and redwings. Good birding.Aa(Ron) Allensen Monarch Landing, 55751 Lakeshore Line, R. 2., Port Burwell Port Burwell is at the southern terminus of hiway 19(Vienna Road). [Ontbirds] Mew Gull Cobourg March 23
Several birders have now seen the adult Mew Gull just off the parking lot at the northwest corner of Cobourg harbour, found earlier today, March 23, by Sarah Petrasek. It stands on the beach from time to time or swims a few metres into the water. Mantle colour very little darker than the nearby, bigger, Ring-billeds, neat small yellow bill and dark eye, big white tertial crescent. Still there at 12.30. Not the same bird as the darker-mantled Mew Gull in the harbour in mid-February! Directions: Exit 474 from Hwy 401 and south on Division Street to the harbour. Drive round the harbour to the west parking lot. Margaret Bain Cobourg mjcb...@sympatico.ca ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Merlins back in Wasaga Beach
We have had a pair of Merlins nesting in the giant old White Pines in our neighbourhood for a few years now. I just heard and saw one of the birds a few minutes ago. They are pretty raucous and visible for most of the season. 39th Street North, Wasaga Beach. All the street names off Mosley Street (the main thoroughfare) are numbered in sequence, so it is really easy to find. Scott A. [Ontbirds] Mew Gull at Cobourg
Hi Ontbirders, I just got a call from Sarah Petrasek who has found and photographed a Mew Gull at Cobourg Harbour! Margaret Bain and Richard Pope are there now watching it. The mantle colour is apparently just slightly darker than the ring-bills suggesting it is perhaps a different bird than the 13 Feb. bird that was at the same place. Directions: Cobourg Harbour is best reached by taking the easternmost of the two Hwy. 401 exits (Division St.). Follow Division south to the lake, which brings you to the eastern side of the harbour. Then head to the western side along the road following the shoreline ("The Esplanade" I think). Park where all the mallards and geese are at the western end of the harbour and the bird is sitting on the beach area just offshore. [Ontbirds] Tundra Swans - Lambton?
Hello folks, I'm very excited to see the huge flock of tundra swans at Lambton but can't make the 4 hr. drive until this weekend. I'd hate to drive all the way down in vain and I wonder if anyone could keep me posted with any news about the swans? If anyone has any news would you please e-mail me privately? I can't thank you enough. All the best, David Bell ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
