[Ontbirds] possible Fish Crow - Port Hope
Brett Fried and I just had a possible Fish Crow over the highway at exit 456, west side of Port Hope. This is more of a heads up for birders since I'm definitely not 100% comfortable calling it a Fish Crow from sight alone, but it certainly looked like it. Good comparison to nearby American Crows. Brett and I have seen several Fish Crows recently in the Kitchener, Cambridge and Guelph areas the last couple of weeks. [Ontbirds] Snowy Owl still at Blenheim Sewage Lagoons
Ontbirders : Further to Rick's earlier posting, a Snowy Owl continues to stay at the Blenheim Sewage Lagoons. It has been here for a few weeks now. I saw it this afternoon. It was sitting in the open field, just East of the lagoon, on the Allison Sideroad. It moves about in the general area, never far from the lagoons. Today it was visible by car. Sometimes you need to enter the lagoon compound, and search the fields. Our ponds are too high for anything but ducks, but shorebirds are beginning to appear at the building sprinklers. [Ontbirds] Black-backed Woodpecker - Madoc area
Posting for Konchog Norbu. Please note you need to arrange access before looking for this bird. This morning I found a male Black-backed Woodpecker working a grove by the guest house at the Ogyan Dzong Buddhist Centre north of Madoc, at the base of Mount Moriah. I'm an American birder living here so not sure exactly how unusual this is outside of boreal/recent burn habitats, but it strikes me as a pretty good find and I was able to get diagnostic photos. From Madoc take rt. 62 to rt. 7 and head east on 7. Take the next left on Cooper Road. Follow this several kilometers through the hamlet of Cooper then go right on Lingham Lake Rd. About 5k down this rd. is the centre, #1755. To gain access, please email or phone ahead: i...@palyulcanada.org or 613-967-7432. [Ontbirds] Snowy Owl
On April 14 Nigel Shaw and I observed a Snowy Owl in a field at the corner of the 20th Sideroad and 2nd Line in Innisfil Township. Nigel subsequently banded the bird and determined it was a female. We did not see the bird today. This could have been on of the birds that over-wintered in the Holland Marsh. From Bradford take Highway 11 north to Fennels Corner. Turn right at the lights and head east to 20th Sideroad. Turn left and go north to 2nd Line Bruce Wilson, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.
