Karen Padbury, Olga Klekner, Patrick Tomlinson,
  Roland Klekner, Steve Wagner

Visitors:
A dozen visitors today including people from Cincinnati, Ohio; Silver Lake,
Indiana; and Washington and Shelby, Michigan.

Weather:
It started off a little chilly at 8C but turned into a nice day with a high
of almost 20C. The winds started out of the north, then shifted south, and
finally south-east generally in the 5 - 10 km/hr range. The cloudless skies
in the afternoon made it difficult to locate the very high flying raptors.

Raptor Observations:
Not quite as hectic as yesterday, but a good day at 4,573 birds of 12
species. An early morning rush of 3,855 Broad-winged hawks between 0900 and
1000 showed promise, but it quickly faded with the shift in the winds and
the day total ended at 4,189. It was another good Bald Eagle day with 15
birds of various ages with most of them up at the cloud limit. The mid-day
Peregrine that came in strafe the plastic owl was one of 3 observed today.

Non-raptor Observations:
It was not a big non-raptor migration day today either. Chimney Swifts and
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds had good numbers at 5 and 22 respectively. Just
1 Blue Jay today, so the big flight of them may be delayed this year. Nine
Eastern Bluebird were the first for the count season. Cedar Waxwing
maintained their position with the highest number of migrants so far with
another 19 birds. Six Monarchs flew by today.

Predictions:
The Wednesday forecast includes temperatures ranging from 14 - 23C; mostly
sunny; and winds out of the SE in the a.m. shifting to the S in the p.m.
from 10 - 15 km/hr. The morning could be slow for raptors with the SE
winds, but should improve as the winds shift to the south.

[Ontbirds] Camera left at Van Wagner's Beach Sept 13th

2013-09-17 Thread Barbara Charlton
Birders,

It has come to our attention that a camera was left on the viewing deck at
the Lakeland Centre last Friday September 13th at Van Wagner's Beach.

Apparently it was picked up by an honest passerby and left with the staff
of Carmen's restaurant. Carmen's operates the restaurant and banquet hall
at the Lakeland Centre as well as Baci Ristorante in Hamilton.

If you left your camera at Lakeland Centre last Friday you should contact
Carmen's, describe the make and model of the camera, and let them know it
was turned in last Friday to staff catering the wedding at
Lakeland. Carmen's catering phone number is 905-381-9898 and the restaurant
is 905-387-9490. Not sure which is best to call.

Hopefully this information will reunite the camera with its owner.

Cheers,
Barb Charlton

Weather:
Pleasant throughout, some early morning clouds quickly gave way to much
bluer skies in the afternoon. A touch of haze made spotting difficult on
occasion. The wind was northeast early but shifted southeast in a hurry and
remained that way for the rest of the day.

Raptor Observations:
We had a wonderful early morning flight of Broad-winged Hawks today. Early
in the 10 o'clock hour, a seemingly endless stream of them wound their way
past the stacks for a good twenty minutes. Throughout the rest of the day,
plenty of other streams of varying sizes were sighted high in the blue sky,
mostly right overhead or to our north. Not to be outdone, Turkey Vultures
made their first significant push of the season. Also of note was the
season's first Red-shouldered Hawk.

Non-raptor Observations:
Red-winged Blackbirds (250) were speeding by in the morning. American
Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwing and Northern Flicker were moving in limited
numbers. Chimney Swifts and Tree and Northern Rough-winged Swallows
continue to be seen with regularity.

Predictions:
Overcast with afternoon clearing, light south wind and a chance of rain.

2013-09-17 Thread Josh Vandermeulen
In the last 30 mins Kory Renaud, David Smzyr and I have been watching jaegers
off Rattray Marsh in mississauga. 4 different birds have been seen, harassing
the gulls offshore. Might be better viewed from Port Credit or points in
between.

At least one is a subadult Long-tailed and one is an juvenile Parasitic.

Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Nelson's Sparrow at Nonquon Lagoons

2013-09-17 Thread Geoff Carpentier
I visited Nonquon lagoons this afternoon to look for shorebirds but was
rewarded with a beautifully plumaged Nelson's Sparrow along the south side of
the most easterly lagoon. It was seen near two Marsh Wrens.

Also seen were 2 Barn Swallows, a Green Heron, a P.B. Grebe, 2 Buffleheads, 77
Northern Shovelers, 7 N. Pintails, 14 Lesser and 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 5 Least
Sandpipers, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Osprey and a Rusty Blackbird.

Elsewhere in the hinterland, last night was a great thrush flight with 18
Swainson's, 2 Gray-cheeked, 1 Veery and an unidentified thrush going over my
house between 5:45 and 6:15 this morning. I'm sure many hundreds must have
passed overnight as they were going over at 11 p.m. last night as well.

Still several warblers around with about a dozen species noted in the last two
days.

Permits for the Non quon laggons must be purchased in advance of entering the
lagoons. They cost
$10.00.

The permits may be purchased at the Durham Region Transfer Site located at
1623 Reach Rd, Port Perry during the following business hours Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from
8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. To get to the transfer station, travel north on Hwy 12
past Port Perry [Hwy 7A] to the next traffic lights [Regional Road 8 Reach
Rd.] and travel east to #1623 on the north side of the road.

The lagoons are located one road north of the transfer site on Concession
Rd. 8 [don't get confused as, despite the fact that these roads are both
numbered "8", hey are two different roads - one is a regional paved road,
the other a dirt concession road.]. Access to the lagoons is from the east
end of Conc. 8 only as the bridge is out west of the lagoons.
