Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 13:00:00
Total observation time: 5 hours

Official Counter:Mary Carnahan

Observers:Don Taylor, Jim Dunn, Shay Redmond

Visitors:
We had lots of visitors at the Cliff today, with a few who came up and
helped out on the mound including Ellen Esseltine (Ingersoll), Janet Fraser
and Martha Gillies (Chatham). Thanks to everyone who helped with observing
and counting today.

Weather:
Not the best winds today moderate from the E and then swinging round to the
SSE. Temp still fairly warm to a high of 22C. Too much humidity to start
the day with some actual fog hanging in till mid-morning then clearing with
haze to the north.

Raptor Observations:
A total of 128 birds today...mostly TVs (91)...along with N. Harrier (6),
Sharpies (22), a single Redtail, Kestrels (4) and the highlights of the
dayearly on a young Goshawk that was spotted traversing the field that
appeared to be hunting...and also 3 Peregrines... the last one which passed
just to the south of the observation knoll and provided observers great
views!

Non-raptor Observations:
Observers noted less action today from non-raptor species. Only 2 Warblers
were reported: American Redstart and Blackpoll. Both species of Kinglet
were seen close to Sharpie Alley along with Black-capped Chickadee,
Dark-eyed Junco, White-breasted Nuthatch, American Robin and American
Goldfinch above the shrubs plus Swainson's Thrush and several Gray Catbirds
lower down. Blue Jays called throughout the morning; about 200 were seen
flying westward in the first couple of hours, but later many were seen
returning to the treeline on the east side of the field.

Spotted from the knoll were Red-bellied and Downy Woodpecker (directly
above the knoll), Pileated Woodpecker and several Northern Flickers, both
species seen flying across the field. An Eastern Phoebe and a few Cedar
Waxwings were spotted nearby and 2 Song Sparrows were lurking in the shrubs
just north of the knoll.

Many dragonflies were seen today, mostly Black Saddlebags and Green
Darners which, like the birds were mainly just flying back and forth.
Others spotted were Meadowhawks, a single Red Saddlebags and a Shadow
Darner.

Monarch Butterflies were on the move again today; numerous Orange Sulphurs
and Cabbage Whites were seen in the field and along the roadsides plus a
few Eastern Tailed Blue, mainly in laneways near Sharpie Alley.

Predictions:
The next couple of days could be interesting with SW winds
predictedthough a bit light. SW winds at this point in the season can
bring decent Peregrine flights along the Cliff. Let's hope it works out
that way.

By road, it's on Talbot Street East, east of Erie St, on the north side
past the Hospital (which is on the south side). If you get to the
intersection with Oak Street, you've just passed it.

[Ontbirds] Laughing Gull, Hillman Marsh

2013-09-28 Thread Sarah Rupert
Hi all
The laughing gull has returned to the bridge just north of Hillman Marsh.
Please be careful viewing from the bridge as there is a lot of traffic on the
road. Try and stay on the paved sidewalk area for your safety

Good birding

[Ontbirds] QC Sharp-tailed Sandpiper: route suggestion

2013-09-28 Thread Martin Bowman

Dear Mark,

The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is still at Baie du Febvre as of Saturday a.m.

I went to see the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper in Quebec yesterday. Further to
Langis' directions, I would strongly urge Ontarians to take the
following route rather than the one suggested. This route takes full
advantage of the newly completed 30, which effectively is a bypass
around Montreal on the South Shore. There is a toll of $1.50 for the
bridge across the St Lawrence.

The 401 becomes the 20 at the Quebec border. Continue on 20 until the
junction with the newly completed 30, following signs for Tracy-Sorel.
Take the 30 all the way to the end of the autoroute at Sorel (about 140
kms.) Then follow 132 east through Yamaska and Pierreville to Baie du
Febvre. Then left on Route Janelle where the ponds are easy to find.
Total distance for this route is just under 220 kms. from the Ontario
border and entirely avoids the Island of Montreal and the main route to
Quebec. If traveling from Ottawa, take the 417 to the 40 in Quebec and
then take the 30 as above (the 30 now begins at the junction with the 40).
