[Ontbirds] Many Snowies remain in Marsh

2014-03-21 Thread Hendrik Hart
Birders,

This balmy day, with much of the snow cover beginning to melt, has not induced
the Snowy Owls of Holland Marsh to return home. I found 7 there today, all in
the quadrant bordered by the Holland River, Dufferin, Hwy 9 and Hwy 400. There
were three along the short stretch of Jane between Woodchopper and Edward. Two
were on the West side of Jane, one was on the East side. There were also three
on Strawberry, one on the North side and two on the South. Finally, there was
one north of Bernardt. All were in the field and far from the roads.

The owls showed distinct differences in their marking. Some were totally
covered with the black/brown stripes, whereas others showed much pure white,
even having a virtually all white upper body.

With heavy snow expected tonight the owls should all be there tomorrow.

Be aware that Dufferin is under construction and is for now not a through road.

Take Hwy 400 to Hwy 9 and exit to go east on 9. Jane and Keele both cross 9 and
are good entries to the fields where the Snowies are.

[Ontbirds] Canvasback X Redhead Hybrid, Bronte Marina, Oakville, March 21/14

2014-03-21 Thread Leonard Manning
Birders,

Hello to you.

The aforementioned hybrid being quite unusual, I thought I would post an
update on this bird. Mark Jennings had posted about this bird a week ago or
so and while Joanne Redwood and I were at Bronte Harbour this afternoon, we
ran into Mark and he showed us this bird.
Joanne was able to get some photos and circulate them and the consensus is
that the bird is indeed a Canvasback X Redhead Hybrid. The bird is a male
and basically looks like a dull Canvasback, with a Redhead bill and has
some other mixed features.
I have some photos for those so inclined.

The Hybrid has been associating with Redheads and today was viewed from the
west pier, looking into the harbour.

While you are there, look for the Snowy Owl and female King Eider, which
were also present today.

Directions:

Exit the QEW at Bronte Rd. (Oakville) and go to the lake and turn left
on Ontario - the only way you can go!

Park in the lot and walk west to the pier which you can walk out on.

[Ontbirds] Long Point spring migrants

2014-03-21 Thread Diane Salter
Diane & I had a very rewarding day at Long Point where we found many
spring migrants. Tundra Swans are plentiful at Big Creek & in open
water on the Lake on the south side of the Causeway. At the Port Rowan
wetlands (newly de-commissioned sewage lagoons) we found a pair of
Killdeer. On the East Quarter Line south of Lakeshore Road we came
across the Bald Eagle's nest where one of the parents took off from its
perch to give us a very close view of its flight westward.

As we drove across the Causeway we observed hundreds of Tundra Swans on
a very small patch of open water where hundreds more gather at night. A
Turkey Vulture hovered overhead on the Causeway where 3 Canvas Backs
were found at the mouth of Big Creek. On the Front Road (County Rd. 42)
we found two adult Sandhill Cranes just west of Lee Brown's farm on the
south side at the edge of a wood lot.

Farther on Front Road west were the last remnants of the flocks of
Horned Larks which over-winter here. Farther to the west we entered the
Jackson Gunn Old Growth Forest Preserve (Lower Side Road, between Conc.
4 -5, north of Houghton) where we found the Red Headed Woodpeckers
vigorously carving a hole in an ancient beech tree.

Many more birds were found at feeders and on the roadsides; sparrows,
song, tree, whitethroats, house; blackbirds - grackles and red-wings;
woodpeckers - red bellied, downy, hairy and red headed.

[Ontbirds] Fish Crow - Jack Darling Park, Mississauga

2014-03-21 Thread David Pryor
I just had a fish crow at Jack Darling Park. The bird was feeding on the beach
and then flew into a nearby tree where it vocalized several times. It then flew
east towards Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens park in the company of several
common crows.

Both Jack Darling and Brueckner Rhododendron Parks are on Lakeshore Road West
in Mississauga. Both parks are east of Southdown rd.
