[Ontbirds] OFO--Toronto Islands (trip results)
Hello Ontbirders, A beautiful sunny day on the Islands for 27 friendly OFO members today. We had temperatures of 16-18 degrees and winds changing to the west up to 35 km/hr. We managed to find quite a lot of bird activity; especially in the morning on Ward's. Species total for the day was 93. Below are some of the highlights we encountered. On Algonquin we heard and saw a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and it afforded us some great looks. While we were watching it a CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW called from a nearby yard. Ward's Island gave us some stunning looks at a SCARLET TANAGER. We had a total of six INDIGO BUNTING males that delighted our group. At least two WILSON'S WARBLER were present this morning as well. Both singing consistently. I can only estimate around 50 BALTIMORE ORIOLES throughout the day. There were a few ORCHARD ORIOLES as well. Certainly a myriad of colours to enjoy. Other highlights today included at least six male BOBOLINK near the airport fence on Hanlan's. Two RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (Ward's), CANVASBACK and a lingering GREATER SCAUP at the pond adjacent to Gibraltar point. A couple of CASPIAN TERN calling. Also near the airport fence there is a wet area with calling VIRGINIA RAIL. CHIMNEY SWIFTS have arrived and one of our group noted a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on Algonquin island. LEAST and GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, one EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE. We also noted a couple of SWAINSON'S THRUSH and two confiding WOOD THRUSH. About 3,256,435 Midges. :) 16 species of WarblerBLUE-WINGED (1)WILSON'S (2)AMERICAN REDSTART (3)BLACKBURNIAN (1)COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (1)NORTHERN PARULA (1)BLACK-THROATED BLUE (4)BLACK-THROATED GREEN (1)NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (2)YELLOW (70+)YELLOW-RUMPED (26)MAGNOLIA (4)CHESTNUT-SIDED (3)NASHVILLE (6)BLACK & WHITE (5)PALM (6) Not the numbers the Ontario shoreline was seeing yesterday but certainly a good day was had by all AND almost everyone continued all the way to Hanlan's where we finished up and got the 4:15 ferry. [Ontbirds] Bells Vireo and Cerulean Warbler - Long Point Provincial Park
The Bell's Vireo was seen again from about noon until 3PM. It sang frequently and stayed in the same area as reported below. I managed to get some reasonable pictures: http://bit.ly/QsV6dT. Also seen in the same area was a cerulean warbler: http://bit.ly/RAz89P Both birds were seen around camp site 321 in Long Point Provincial Park. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update May 10, 2014
Good afternoon birders, Although birding has slowed down a bit in the afternoon heat, the birding is still good at Rondeau, and will no doubt improve in the evening. A total of 28 species of warbler have been reported today. Prothonotary Warblers have been seen on Tulip Tree Trail, near the deer exclosure on Bennett Road and on Harrison Trail north of the group campground. None of these birds have been at all reliable today. Neither of the Summer Tanagers reported today have been seen again. 2 Clay-colored Sparrows have been seen on the lawns of the cottages near the entrance of Marsh Trail. Reports of such uncommon species as Yellow-throated Vireo, Blue-winged Warbler and Orange-crowned Warbler have been widespread around the park. Birding continues to be better in the northern part of the park. Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email. eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share them with the username "RondeauPPVisitorCentre" for our records. [Ontbirds] Point Pelee National Park Migration Report -Saturday, May 10, 2014
Point Pelee NP Migration Report for May 10. Quite a few new migrants have arrived again today. So far birding was the best from the Tip up to Shuster Trail along the east beach. Birds were bug-hunting high and low in the brush along the beach. At least 20+ species of warbler are being seen. At the Tip a LITTLE GULL , and BLACK SCOTER were seen flying near the shore. Also a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was traveling along the west side at the Tip. Walking the east side at the Tip, people were finding many species. These included a BELL'S VIREO 400 m north of the Sparrow Field, SUMMER TANAGER north of the path over from the 42 sign, CANADA WARBLER, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, WILSON'S WARBLER. Just south of the Sparrow Field there was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. A second one was reported from bridge E on the Woodland Nature Trail. And a third one was found along the east beach about 800 m south of Shuster Trail. We just had a report of the first PHILADELPHIA VIREO of the year along the east beach just south of Shuster Trail. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was again reported from the Sparrow Field. A good group of birds was also reported from Tilden Woods. The most notable was a CERULEAN WARBLER. Many thrushes were also noted. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was heading south through the Woodland Nature Trail. Migrants are arriving in droves, diversity is high and we can finally breathe a sigh of relief here that spring has finally arrived. Our rarities section starts out with a WILLET. Not a rarity provincially but certainly not common in the Hamilton Study Area. This WILLET was found by birders looking for the short staying Glossy Ibis. The WILLET stayed a couple of days out in the field at 8th Road East and Britannia. Nearby at James Snow Parkway the 7 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen on Saturday but not after. An EASTERN WHIPOORWILL was heard at dawn near Aberdeen in Hamilton, a nice yard bird! A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen at Ruthven and an early Yellow-bellied Flycatcher was recorded there as well. Out and about at the woodlots along the lake birds reported from Sherwood Forest and Shoreacres Park in Burlington, Edgelake Park in Stoney Creek and 40 mile Creek in Grimsby include a variety of migrants. On those properties this week, Least Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, Warbling Vireo, House Wren, Blue-gray-Gnatcatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Swainson's, Wood and Hermit Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Ovenbird, Black-and-White, Tennessee, Nashville Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Blackburnian, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Palm, Yellow-rumped and Black-throated Green Warbler, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrow, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole were all reported in various numbers. Along Tuck Creek in Burlington, a Yellow- throated Vireo was a nice addition to the yard list. Shorebirds continue to move through with Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Solitary Sandpiper reported at fields in Saltfleet and Oakville, these fields should continue to produce. Another good spot this time of year is Cityview Park in Burlington on Kerns Road. Here this week a Golden-winged Warbler was found. This park is also good for a sparrow sweep with Vesper, Field, Song and Grasshopper Sparrow here this week. Clay-colored Sparrows nested here last year. There is lots to report in the odds and sods. Loons seem to be a bit late moving through with a good supply of Red-throated Loons being seen. One was seen off Bronte Harbour in the week and 5 more off Grays Road. An Iceland Gull was also seen off Bronte and Shoreacres. Common Loons are being seen in increasing numbers as well. The Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch is winding down with a few more Broad- winged Hawks continuing to move north. Up to eight Sandhill Cranes were photographed near Glen Morris. A very late Snowy Owl was seen atop a pole on Tapleytown earlier in the week. Ruby-throated Hummingbird was present at a yard in Binbrook, more to come for sure so keep your feeders out. A Red-headed Woodpecker has returned to a property in Ancaster where they have been seen yearly. An early Yellow-bellied Flycatcher was recorded at Ruthven banding station. An Eastern Kingbird was seen at the Slote Road Marsh. Blue-winged Warblers have returned to the Berry Tract. This is a good location for various hybrids of Blue and Golden-winged Warblers. A Lincoln's Sparrow was found near the Slote Road Bog along with a variety of warblers. Indigo Buntings have been reported at feeders in Brant Co. south of Carluke and Copetown this week. Bobolinks could be heard on 10th Road East. usty Blackbirds were also seen on theDofasco Trail in Saltfleet between 10th and 11th Road East. Its an exciting time of year. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Migration Report May 10, 2014
Good morning, It's a great morning to be out in Rondeau, with excellent numbers and diversity of migrants present. At least 24 species of warblers have been reported already today. The northern half of the park seems to be the busiest area today. A female Summer Tanager was seen about 500 m south of Pony Barn on Harrison trail. A Prothonotary Warbler has been present irregularly at the back of Tulip Tree Trail - post 7. Yellow-billed Cuckoos have been seen on South Point and Harrison Trails. 3 Hooded Warblers were present between Maintenance and Pony Barn on Harrison Trail. Grasshopper Sparrow was seen at the washout on South Point Trail. Mourning Warbler was seen on Tulip Tree Trail next to Harrison Trail. Lots of birds out there to find! Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email. eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share them with the username "RondeauPPVisitorCentre" for our records. More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of Rondeau is available at the Friends' website: www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca. Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. Bird sighting information, bird checklists, bird feeders, and breakfast and lunch offered by the Friends can be found at the visitor centre. To reach the visitor centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. I lead guided hikes in the park twice daily - contact the visitor centre for more information. I put a green chain on the beach, for 25mins the bird has stayed in the same spot and is still there, you could literally sit in the chair and watch the bird! [Ontbirds] Bells Vireo and Summer Tanager - Long Point New PP
Adam Timpf and Jarmo are currently keeping an eye on the Bell's Vireo. Seems insignificant compared to the Bell's, but I also had a moulting summer tanager near the garbage bins, not far the where Jarmo found the Bell's. [Ontbirds] Dickcissel at Rondeau maintenance area
Steve Charbonneau and I heard a Dickcissel over the maintenance yard at rondeau provincial park at about 6:30 this morning ((flying west). White-eyed Vireo was the only other bird of note here so far but there is a decent amount if activity. Maintenance is just west if the campground.
