[Ontbirds] A question of common sense.

2015-02-09 Thread Judy Eberspaecher

Thanks for posting this message.

One of the problems that we must consider is that the residents have

been feeding these special birds and keeping them alive in this harsh

environment. If we cause them to stop feeding because of our rude and

inconsiderate actions, we will cause the death of the birds. Aren't we

bird lovers!!!

I witnessed such behaviour near the Painted Bunting where a

photographer/birder after more than 3 hours refused to leave the side

of the property when the owner asked him to allow others a chance. As

a member of the same club and a photographer/ birder, I was appalled

by his attitude.

Some of the strife arises when large numbers of watchers flock in to

see an unusual bird as we had with the Hooded Warbler some years back

- over 100 birders in about 3 days.

I believe we need someone to spend an evening at our Naturalists club

meetings reviewing the rules and ethics. Most of this is common sense

but some people lack that. Birding is such a joy and it is a shame that

we have this blight on our record.

[Ontbirds] Pine Warbler - Port Weller/St. Catharines

2015-02-09 Thread Diane and Kayo Roy
An immature male Pine Warbler has been coming to backyard suet and nyjer seed
feeders at a residence in Port Weller since January 16th. The residence owner,
Nel Dekker, does not mind birders coming to see the bird. The feeders can be
easily seen from their driveway at 709 Read Road, Port Weller, St. Catharines.
It is best to drive into the driveway and use the car as a blind given the
warbler and other birds are quite skittish. The bird was seen all day Sunday.

Directions:
Exit the Queen Elizabeth Highway in St. Catharines at Niagara Street. Proceed
north 5 km. to the T intersection at Lakeshore Road. Turn right here and
continue east over the Lock 1 Welland Canal bridge three blocks to Read Road.
Turn left and drive to the end of the road. The residence is on your right and
backs on to the lake. Turn right on the front laneway and then left into the
driveway. The feeders are to the left of the residence at about the middle of
the yard.

Good luck

[Ontbirds] Interested in surveying for Marsh Birds or Amphibians this spring?

2015-02-09 Thread Kathy Jones
This email has been posted with permission of the Ontbirds Coordinator

Dear Ontbird members

Interested in surveying for Marsh Birds or Amphibians this spring?

Each spring, hundreds of active Citizen Scientists in Ontario and the Great
Lakes States dedicate 8 or more hours to survey marsh birds and/or amphibians
in Great Lakes coastal and inland marshes. Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program
volunteers are awarded with a great opportunity to spend time in these unique
habitats - enjoying nature, improving their skills, and supporting wetland
conservation. At the same time the important data they collect contributes to
our understanding of these species, their habitat needs and the health of the
Great Lakes.

Interested in participating? Learn more about the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring
Program http://www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/glmmp online, and view a map of
available and assigned routes http://goo.gl/sgoaX2 . To register, contact
Kathy Jones volunteer at

[Ontbirds] Agreement on my post

2015-02-09 Thread Judy Eberspaecher

Hello Mark,

I just wanted to let you know that I had 14 email messages so far in regards
to my post on OntBirds yesterday. ALL were in agreement and many were worded
in much stronger words than I expressed. Some people suggested that names be
posted and pictures be taken of the offenders however I would never do that.
(That is up to you if that is done. ) At our Larks luncheon today people
were very vocal about these issues and were also in agreement.

Judy
