[Ontbirds] OFO Shorebird Viewing - Hillman Marsh

2015-05-12 Thread Jean Iron
This afternoon, Tuesday 12 May, was excellent for shorebird viewing at
Hillman Marsh near Point Pelee. Although winds were strong, many observers
came to see migrating shorebirds. Overall numbers and species are increasing
and will continue to increase. Today's highlights:

Long-billed Dowitcher, adult in full breeding plumage found by Cameron Cox
and refound later providing good views and comparison with Short-billed
Dowitchers
Short-billed Dowitchers, about 15 of the hendersoni subspecies
Wilson's Phalarope, 1
Black-bellied Plover, several
Killdeer with 2 young
Dunlin, many 100s
Greater Yellowlegs, 1
Lesser Yellowlegs, several
Least Sandpipers
Semipalmated Sandpipers

Other birds: 2 Black Terns, 1 Caspian Tern, Forster's Terns, Bonaparte's
Gulls, many ducks including Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Gadwall,
Ruddy Duck, American Wigeon, American Black Duck.

Thanks to Ontario Field Ornithologist (OFO) volunteers: Justin Peter, Bob
Cermak, Mike Burrell, Ken Burrell, Ron Tozer, Mike Tate and Mike Nelson. OFO
thanks the team from Tropical Birding and others who shared their scopes and
expertise. We appreciate everyone who came to see the shorebirds.

The next OFO Shorebird Viewing at Hillman Marsh is on Thursday 14 May 2015
from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Please see poster for more information and
directions.

2015-05-12 Thread olivesided

Hey,
About 10 minutes ago I discovered an adult male Summer Tanager across from
edgelake park in stoney creek.
It's currently in the top of a leafed out deciduous tree coloured with green
and rusty buds. This tree is directly behind s tree with a black beware of dog
sign.
It's catching the odd bee but otherwise not moving so patience will be required
to see it move.

[Ontbirds] Rondeau Update May 12, 2015

2015-05-12 Thread Reuven Martin
Good afternoon,

Birding remains slow today at Rondeau, but dedicated birders are still
finding some good birds. Clearly I am not a dedicated birder as I'm posting
this while watching an American Avocet in Leamington!

A Yellow-breasted Chat was seen on the east side of South Point Trail,
about 500 m from the parking lot.

Prothonotary Warblers continue to be seen on Tulip Tree Trail and Bennett
Rd.

A Hooded Warbler has been seen in the bushes right behind the visitor
centre.

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email.

eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share
them with the username "RondeauPPVisitorCentre" for our records.

More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends
of Rondeau is available at the Friends' website:
www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca.

Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham
Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. Bird sighting
information, bird checklists, bird feeders, and breakfast and lunch offered
by the Friends can be found at the visitor centre. To reach the visitor
centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner
Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. I lead guided
hikes in the park twice daily - contact the visitor centre for more
information.

We just had at least 18 American White Pelicans at this location out over
the distant Phragmites. They are very difficult to see in the howling wind
and as they are out of sight behind the reeds most of the time.

[Ontbirds] Point Pelee NP Migration Report -May 12, 2015

2015-05-12 Thread Festival of Birds
It is a blustery day at Point Pelee today. This has kept many birds down low
and sheltered on the East side of the Park. Not as many birds have been
reported as a result of the conditions.

Those that braved the Tip were rewarded with a few good species. A California
Gull rested for a few minutes before disappearing. Sanderling and Dunlin were
noted on the beach. Also seen a Red-headed Woodpecker, Clay-colored Sparrow, a
Black-billed Cuckoo, and an Eastern Bluebird.
A Canada Warbler was reported from near the 42 Latitude sign near the washrooms
at the Tip.

Bobolink was seen in the Sparrow Field.

There was a Louisiana Waterthrush seen on the seasonal trail near the wet area
in Tilden Woods. Also noted in Tilden was a Gray-cheeked Thrush.

A Summer Tanager was noted at the Cactus Field as well as a Blue-winged Warbler.

A Kentucky Warbler was just reported from 100 m north of Dunes Picnic Area on
the Centennial Bike Trail.

A report has come in that there was a Glossy Ibis and American Avocet in the
shorebird cell at Hillman Marsh Conservation Area.

[Ontbirds] Rondeau Provincial Park Migration Report May 12, 2015

2015-05-12 Thread Reuven Martin
Good morning birders,

A windy morning here at Rondeau today, and it has been fairly hard to find
birds. However, there seems to be some concentrations in areas leeward of
dense forest (generally on the east side of the park).

A male and female Cerulean Warbler were reported from South Point Trail.

Prothonotary Warblers continue to be seen at the back of Tulip Tree Trail.

The Kirtland's Warbler has been looked for more or less continuously since
it was first seen, and as far as I know has not been since mid-day
yesterday. It may still be around, as there was not much movement of birds
last night, but has clearly moved away from its original location on
Harrison Trail south of Pony Barn.

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email.

eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share
them with the username "RondeauPPVisitorCentre" for our records.

More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of Rondeau is
available at the Friends' website: www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca.

[Ontbirds] Connecticut and Brewster's Warbler - Toronto

2015-05-12 Thread David Pryor
At Col Sam Smith Park in Etobicoke

Connecticut is in the upper section of the Dogwood Osier Patch, east of the
rugby field. Brewsters in the lower portion of the patch.

I'll be here for the duration until I manage to get a clear and unambiguous
photo.
