[Ontbirds] OFO Happy Valley field trip summary

2016-06-11 Thread John Schmelefske
Happy Valley OFO Field Trip June 11, 2016:

In spite of the threat of early morning storms 16 intrepid OFO members attended
today’s Happy Valley / Palgrave Conservation Area field trip. We had a good
selection of warblers at both locations, including an unsolicited singing
Hooded Warbler at Happy Valley. Also seen were Scarlet Tanager, Mourning
Warbler, Wood Thrush, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and a very cooperative
Pileated Woodpecker.

After a quick lunch it was off to the Palgrave area, where we added a few more
warblers including Pine, Yellow-rumped and Nashville. Blue-headed Vireo,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Winter Wren were also
present. Bobolinks put on a great arial display just west of the town. We
ended the day at a nearby wetland with Green Heron and a calling Virginia Rail.

By this time the temperature had risen considerably and we were glad to be
heading home. A total of 72 species were seen.

They cut all the fields on the north side today. All the grasses are gone.

2016-06-11 Thread Dan MacNeal
The Bird(s) are still present. As of 6:56 there are two birds singing. One in
the same spot as reported earlier south of Old Barrie Rd and a second on the
north side Old Barrie on 8th Line. The second north bird is singing very close
to the roadside giving great views on the west side of 8th.

See previous post for directions.

[Ontbirds] Red Crossbills

2016-06-11 Thread ARO

This morning at 1000 am I observed a small flock of 6-8 red crossbills feeding
high in conifer pines on a trail in the northeast corner of the North Tract in
the York Regional Forest. After 20 minutes the flock moved on in a westward
direction.

North Tract is immediately south of intersection of Davis Drive and McCowan
Rd. Entrance to the trails is 400 m south of Davis Drive on west side of
MxCowan Rd. Walk west from the entrance gate for @ 200 m then take the first
trail north.
