[Ontbirds] Sabine's Gull, Jaegers, Phalarope - Toronto

2017-09-02 Thread David Pryor via ONTBIRDS
Early morning and mid-afternoon lake-watching proved fruitful today at Colonel
Sam Smith Park (CSSP), owing to strong SE (i.e., onshore) winds.

Although late-summer and autumn lake-watching from CSSP and areas around the
GTA is generally not even close to as productive as it is from Van Wagner's
Beach in Hamilton, it can still be good during periods of strong south or
southeast winds, as was the case today.

This afternoon I spent several hours lake-watching from Whimbrel Point at CSSP.
Birds seen included a Parasitic Jaeger, another jaeger (quite distant) and a
Sabine's Gull.

This morning, in addition to the flyby Neotropic Cormorant that I posted
earlier today, I had 3 distant jaegers and an obliging Red-necked Phalarope.
These birds were also seen from Whimbrel Point.

Colonel Sam Smith Park is located immediately south of the intersection of
Kipling and Lakeshore in Etobicoke.

[Ontbirds] Juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes - Holland Landing Sewage Lagoons

2017-09-02 Thread Steve Kinsley via ONTBIRDS

This morning, two juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes were seen at the Holland Landing Sewage Lagoons, among a flock of Bonaparte's Gulls. First seen at the south end of the 4th lagoon (eastern-most), later moved to 3rd lagoon (next one west) with most of the Bonies. Seen again by another birder this afternoon on the 3rd lagoon. To get there, follow Yonge St. south from Queensville Sdrd. to Cedar St., then turn east on Cedar until reaching the dead end gates/fence around the lagoons). The gates can be skirted by hopping a short wire fence to the right. Best to visit on weekends or after hours. Also saw 3 Stilt Sandpipers on the 1st (western-most) lagoon.
  Happy Fall birding!

[Ontbirds] Fwd: Re: Juvenile yellow crowned night heron at st. Jacob

2017-09-02 Thread rtontbirds via ONTBIRDS
Finer directions for Night Heron. Just past railway bridge and Tree of Life
trail plaque, there is a little gravel slope down to a look out with a bench
facing the river. From the bench, there is a dirt path going west further down
towards the river. Follow this path under the fallen tree and continue till you
see a small 'path' to the river where the weeds have been trampled down by
successful heron spotters. Bird is at eye level directly across the river
roosting in a tangle but clearly visible.
Good luck.Rick ThorntonExeter

The bird is still here and showing well feeding in the water across the river
about 300 metres past (west of) the rail bridge. It's viewable from a lookout
where there is a bench down close to the river.  This is 30 meters past the
"Tree of Life" plaque.

It's been a very busy week here in the HSA. As you can see by the top of
the list, beach season has started with a bang with more to come I am sure
on east winds predicted for today.

Let's start at the top. A PIPING PLOVER, a juvenile from Darlington, was a
complete surprise for birders posted at the Lakeland Centre for a beach
watch on Wednesday. The bird remained on Thursday but there were no reports
yesterday.

The lake watch at Lakeland Centre down at VanWagners Beach ramped up last
Sunday with SABINE'S GULL, PARASITIC and LONG-TAILED JAEGERS being seen.
Other birds noted here include Common Loon, Sanderling, Black-tern and of
course the above Piping Plover. JUST IN: A Sabine's Gull is sitting on the
beach at Hutches.

Down at Windermere Basin, the birding has been the best I have seen it. A
MARBLED GODWIT has remained here for over a week and was present yesterday.
Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS stopped in for a brief time on the 24th but it was
just a brief stop by and were not seen by many. Other shorebirds reported
from there up to yesterday include Semipalmated Plover, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Sanderling, Semipalmated, Least,
Baird's, Pectoral, Stilt and Buff-breasted Sandpiper and Short-billed
Dowitcher. Almost as rare as the top of the list in these parts, an
American Bittern was seen walking around last Saturday. Other birds of note
here include Great Egret and Bonaparte's Gull. Down to the east a
Red-necked Phalarope dropped in for a quick spin around at Jones Road on
Thursday.

The woodlots have been busy this week with a strong movements of flycatchers
and warblers. Locations being reported from include Edgelake Park in Stoney
Creek, Shoreacres/Paletta Park in Burlington, Sedgewick Park in Oakville,
Rattray Marsh in Mississauga and Joe Sam's Park in Waterdown. Reported from
these locations this week, Yellow-billed (Sedgewick) and Black-billed
Cuckoo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Eastern
Wood-Pewee, Yellow-bellied, Willow, Least, Great Crested Flycatcher,
Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Veery, Swanson's
Thrush, Ovenbird, Golden-winged, Black-and-white, Nashville Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Cape May, Magnolia, Bay-breasted,
Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Palm (Sedgewick and Rock Chapel),
Black-throated Green, Canada and Wilson's Warbler and Rose-breasted
Grosbeak. A Golden-winged Warbler was just reported from Woodland Cemetery
this morning.

In the odds and sods, lots of reports of Chimney Swifts and Common
Nighthawks are coming from Dundas and Hamilton area. A lateish Baltimore
Oriole was seen at a feeder in Caledonia yesterday.

Apologies if I have not covered everything on the report, moving day for two
kids here and its busy!!! Get out and bird! Report your sightings here.

Cheryl Edgecombe

[Ontbirds] Nonquon lagoons

2017-09-02 Thread Geoff Carpentier via ONTBIRDS
I went to Nonquon lagoons yesterday and the birding was quite good. In an
hoir or so I had 55 species including six species of Sandpiper. Killdeer,
Spotted Sandpiper, Solitary Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Lesser Lellowlegs
and snipe. There were also nine species of warblers there, a Moorhen and
three lingering Black Terns. Additionally I had 198 Bonaparte's Gulls. This
was an actual count of sitting birds in case you're wondering. The numbers
and variety of ducks is building. The family of Trumpeters is doing great.

The lagoons are located on the north edge of Port Perry on the 8th
Concession. Don't forget you need a permit.
