For 1-2 hours there were consistently about 20 visitors on the tower looking aorund and enjoying the beautiful day. Weather: Weather was very similar to yesterdays, but with a very slightly stronger breeze. Raptor Observations: Today we had similar total number of raptors as yesterday, but lacking in the diversity department. Shapries made up the greater majority of the flight today. Similar to yesterday, they started out migrating over the tower in the morning, but moved further to the North as the day continued. Another adult Red-shouldered Hawk today was nice. Non-raptor Observations: Similarly low total duck numbers today as yesterday, but the same diversity. Two Red-headed Woodpeckers migrating over were a nice treat. For the full list of non-raptors observed today, see the eBird checklist here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39240357 As far as insects go, there were five Black Saddlebags, a single Green Darner, and 11 Monarch Butterflies noted migrating today. Predictions: Tomorrow looks like a chance of North component winds, although there is also a chance of rain in the morning. Hopefully the rain misses us and we get some action! Unfortunately there weren't too many hawks to enjoy along with it. Weather: Hot, sunny, almost cloudless skies with the slightest breeze from the SE. A very warm day up on the hawk tower. Raptor Observations: Relatively slow day for raptor numbers today with the poor migration weather. By mid-morning, most birds had already moved far to the north where you needed binoculars to see many of them. Majority of the birds were Sharpies, but there was some other diversity. One adult Red-shouldered Hawk was a nice treat as it is still relatively early for them. Non-raptor Observations: Good diversity of dabbling ducks in the marsh, although total numbers seem relatively low. A single Green Darner, two each of Black Saddlebags and and Twelve-spotted Skimmer, along with three Monarchs making up the insects observed migrating. The focus again for rarities this week was VanWagners Beach. Early in the week up to four PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen at scope distance. A real treat mid week and totally unexpected was a group of 21 SABINE'S GULLS seen at a distance from Lakeland. These gulls may still be around waiting for the winds to change. Other birds noted down here were Bonaparte's Gull and Black Tern. Shorebirds are still in the news. The Marbled Godwit continues to be seen at Windermere Basin along with the Red Knot, probably the record for the longest staying MAGO. At Tollgate Pond American Golden Plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, Sanderling and Baird's Sandpiper were noted. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was noted flying out of here one day this week toward Windermere Basin. Cootes Paradise is still high but a small patch of mud yielded Spotted and Solitary Sandpiper to a paddler. Cootes seems to be a haven for Herons and Egrets with up to 25 Great Egrets seen going to roost at Caroll's point and on Hickory Island last Sunday. A healthy supply of 25 Black-crowned Night Herons (25) were seen on a paddle last night along with Great Blue Heron and Green Heron. The Valley Inn is also a good place to look for herons and egrets. We just need to find a Little Blue tucked in with them. One of the best sightings celebrated this week was of flocks of Nighthawks over Cootes Paradise and Princess Point. Common Nighthawks were also noted travelling over Ruthven down in the south of the HSA. The woodlots have been busy again this week with reports coming from Edgelake and Confederation Park, Rock Chapel/Borer's Falls, and Sedgewick in Oakville. Birds noted here include Olive-sided Flycatcher (Sedgewick), Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (Sedgewick and Confederation), Least Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Great Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo (Edgelake), Warbling, Philadelphia and Red-eyed Vireo, Winter Wren (Confederation), Veery, Gray-cheeked and Swainson's Thrush (Confederation), Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush (Edgelake), Black-and-white (Rock Chapel), Tennessee (Confederation), Nashville Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Cape May Warbler, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Bay-breasted, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Palm, Black-throated Green and Wilson's Warbler and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Lincoln's Sparrows are the first of the Sparrow group to start the move and were seen at Confederation Park last Sunday. There was an e-bird report of a BOREAL CHICKADEE on Thursday at Christie Conservation Area. Any details of this sighting or photos would be greatly appreciated. Happy Summer.
