2017-10-10 Thread Rick Eckley via ONTBIRDS

My son Felix and I had 1 Hudsonian Godwit and 1 Long Billed Dowitcher at the
Essex Sewage Lagoons West around 5:30 last night. Both birds were seen by
others yesterday morning, but were scared off by a Peregrine.

Visitors:
All observers happy with the relatively low flight in the afternoon. Thank
you to all the help!

Weather:
A great day on the tower today with good north winds and lots of clouds!

Raptor Observations:
Despite the fact that I got stung by a wasp, it was still a stellar day!!
2881 Raptors total! An excellent flight of Turkey Vultures with 2121;
almost 500 went by the tower really low between 4-4:30 local time, and many
others in the hours previous were quite low as well. Also had really good
flights of Sharpies (447) and Red-tails (108), along with smaller but still
good counts of Harriers (34), and Kestrels (121). The Kestrel flight was
mostly the last two hours of the count. The highlight of the day came at
3:35 (local time), and cause a bit of brief confusion.. a Dark Morph
"Western" Red-tailed Hawk came by the tower real low and slow for some
careful observation. It was a beautiful adult bird.

Non-raptor Observations:
Lots of non-raptor movement today! Highlights include 87 Killdeer, 9
Chimney Swifts, 4200 Blue Jays, 221 Am. Robins, 49 Am. Pipits, 123 Cedar
Waxwings, and 7 Pine Siskins. This was the first significant movement of
Am. Robins, Am. Pipits, and Cedar Waxwings so far this year. Full eBird
checklist here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39818583 Only 4
Monarchs were counted today, as well as a few Darners migrating.

Predictions:
Tomorrow is predicted to bea wash out
Rain predicted until the afternoon.

Visitors:
Thanks to Bob, Ernie and Mike S for today's report along with visitors
Richard and Andalyne T.

Weather:
In a word FOG. A good chunk of the morning saw fog completely socking
in the hawk watch resulting in no flight. Eventually, the fog burned off
and a few birds crossed through. Temp got to a high of 21C and winds were
light from the N and NW.

Raptor Observations:
Just 33 birds total today with Sharpies (20), N. Harriers (4), single each
of Red-shoulder, Broadwing and Peregrine and a few more Am. Kestrels (6).

Non-raptor Observations:
Some non-raptors reported today with Am. Crow, Am. Robin, White-throated
and Song Sparrow, Downy, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, YB Sapsuckers, N.
Flickers, for warblers... Nashville, Yellow-rumped, Palm, Blackpoll and
Orange-crowned, RC and GC Kinglets, House Wren, N. Cardinals, Eastern
Phoebe, Gray Catbirds, Blue-headed Vireo, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, DE
Junco, Blue Jays and even a late RT Hummingbird.

Predictions:
Supposed to be strong ENE and E winds BUT a good chance of rain... so it's
hard to say what the flight will be like. If the rain comes as predicted
it will likely be enough to shut down the flight completely.
