[Ontbirds] Brant -yes

2017-11-29 Thread Craig Corcoran via ONTBIRDS
The single Brant is present among a group of mallards, widgeon and black ducks
in Crystal Beach. Take QEW towards Fort Erie. Exit at Sodom Road and drive
straight to beach parking lot. Birds are feeding in the surf right at the
shoreline. Easy to get within fifty feet for pics if you are so inclined. Very
windy and cold in the parking lot.

[Ontbirds] Northern Shrike - Algonquin Provincial Park (Old Airfield)

2017-11-29 Thread Dan Birkenbergs via ONTBIRDS
Good Evening All,

At approximately 2:15pm this afternoon, I observed a solitary Northern Shrike
flying NE across the Old Airfield (Mew Lake Campground) in Algonquin Park.

The bird was carrying a prey item (either a mouse or a vole) and did not remain
very long, but just long enough to get a look at it's curved bill.

Directions: Highway 60 to Algonquin Park. Mew Lake campground is approx. Km
30. Follow road in to campground, Old Airfield parking lot less than 1 km in
on left (follow signs). By foot follow Old Railway Bike Trail (signs posted)
to airfield. Permit required.

Good Birding!

Subject: Peregrine Falcon - Meadowvale GO Station

Good Afternoon All,

Today I spotted a Peregrine Falcon perched at the top of a light standard in
the Meadowvale GO station parking lot. The bird was located near the tracks on
the southeast side of the parking lot.

Directions: Meadowvale GO station is located at the foot of Aquitaine Avenue
(at Millcreek Drive) in Mississauga. Take the 401 to the Erin Mills
Parkway/Mississauga Road exit. Turn right (North) on Mississauga Road and
follow to Derry Road West. Turn left (West) on Derry Road and follow to
Millcreek Drive. Turn left (South) on Millcreek Drive and follow to Aquitaine
Avenue. The Meadowvale GO station will be on your left-hand side.

Good Birding!

Visitors:
Many to the tower today for quite potentially the last 'full' day of the
season. Thank you to all who came out.

Weather:
Winds started out of the northwest but were due north for much of the day
before switching to the east and eventually all the way to the south. Not a
cloud in sight all day.

Raptor Observations:
A decent day today - though everything was very high and in the blue sky we
must have missed quite a few going over higher than our eyes could see.
Decent flights of both Red-tails and Red-shoulders. Two Golden Eagles were
the highlights of the day - despite also being very high. Either way a very
good total for the second last day of the count.

Non-raptor Observations:
A few American Goldfinches were migrating today, though most went unseen in
the blue sky. Despite this, 140 were tallied. Another big late push of
American Crows with approximately 1810. Full eBird checklist here:
https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40815397?share=true

Predictions:
South winds and rain predicted for the morning - west winds and just a
small chance of rain in the afternoon.
