[Ontbirds] kiskadee @ Rondeau YES 6.33 pm

2018-09-14 Thread RIC MCARTHUR via ONTBIRDS
The bird has been refound in the same general area it has been all
afternoon.
It is about 100 meters away and 2 meters above the water.

The Wardens caught up to the boaters.
Turns out it wasn't a call. They reversed their small outboard to clear
weeds from the propeller. The high revs spooked the kiskadee.
The Warden was satisfied with the fresh caught fish and the explanation.
Steve Charbonneau also spoke to the 2 fisherman and believes it was an
unintentional disturbance of the bird.

Go through the red gate at the start of the Marsh Trail, and walk directly
west to the bay (30m from the gate). Step over/around the dilapidated dock,
onto the mud and look to the right (north) low along the shoreline. It
spends a lot of time hunting from the roots of fallen trees, often within 2
to 3 feet from the ground.

2018-09-14 Thread RIC MCARTHUR via ONTBIRDS
At 5.30 two idiots in a fishing boat played a call over and over and the
bird spooked and flew into a walnut tree near the path/old dock to the bay.
It hasn't been seen since, but it may have move to the feeding area on
Marsh trail south of the last cottage.

Idiots!!

[Ontbirds] Juvenile Little Blue Heron, Cambridge, ON

2018-09-14 Thread Bill and Heather Wilson via ONTBIRDS
This morning, Friday, September 14, a juvenile Little Blue Heron was
observed on the Grand River at the confluence of the Grand and Speed
rivers from
8:04 a.m. to 8:11 a.m. Bird was scoped by Bill Wilson and photographed by
B. Wilson, B. Johnson and D. Thomas from the benches along the trail; bird
was about 280m along the shoreline of the baylet on the Grand. I will post
if refound.

Hwy 401 exit # 278, Highway 8 to Cambridge-Preston. Proceed down Shantz
Hill and keep left on Fountain Street; turn right on to King Street at the
lights. Proceed on King Street, over the Speed River bridge to intersection
with Westminster Drive where there are lights. Turn right at lights and
follow Westminster to where it curves left and becomes Riverside Drive.
Park along road and walk across grass to the benches which overlook the
confluence of the Grand and Speed rivers.

2018-09-14 Thread ethan.gosnell2--- via ONTBIRDS
Dan MacNeal posted an eBird list by Bill Wilson to the ORBA group on Facebook
with a juvenile Little Blue Heron at the Grand and Speed River confluence, and
I didn't see it posted here. Seen this morning, haven't heard of it being
refound as of yet. Here's the list, hopefully some more people might look:

Re: [Ontbirds] Rondeau Great Kiskadee Friday YES

2018-09-14 Thread Steve Charbonneau via ONTBIRDS
The bird disappeared for almost three hours but was refound at 11:10 by Barb
Crowell. She found it about 85m along the trail on the right hand side near its
usual roosting spot. This is directly across from the gray cottage with
vertical boards and the Natural Restoration sign. It caught and swallowed a
frog to the delight of the 18 birders present. Last seen at 11:30 going into
the willow, presumably to digest its meal.
