[Ontbirds] Red Crossbill 2ce today in Markham; directions
A Red Crossbill which started showing up at my front feeder on April 27th and again on May 2 has been here again today at 6:15 a.m. and just a few minutes ago - 10:30 a.m. Although the times are not consistent enough to predict exact return, it seems fair to say that you might expect it in the early morning, mid morning, early afternoon and dinner time (6:00 ish). CAUTION: this area of Markham is residential, with no sidewalks; children walk to school, come home for lunch, and return home just after 3 p.m. Please be alert for them. DIRECTIONS: The large tube feeder is easily seen from the road, hanging under the spruce tree. The bird is somewhat 'flighty' so please take care not to alarm it. My house is north of highway # 7 and west of highway # 48. Address: 4 Grenfell Cres., Markham. This is a short street going north off Robinson which connects # 7 to # 48 (Main St. N. aka Markham Road.) [Ontbirds] Red Crossbill in Markham
About 1:25 this afternoon a Red Crossbill visited my sunflower seed feeder, drank from the birdbath and flew up into the spruce branches. I was able to snap a few pics through my window and 1 from outside before it became aware of me. Given that it was last seen here on the 27th of April, it is not easy to predict its return. Anyone wishing to see it, may email me privately for a heads up if I see it again. Carol McKnight ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Pine Siskins, Red Crossbill in Markham
A male Siskin was seen singing in the spruce tree in my front yard late last week and today a female was spotted at the finch feeder stuffing itself hungrily. At 6:10 p.m. this evening a male Red Crossbill was seen for a short time at the sunflower seed feeder at my kitchen window. It was clearly seen in good lighting: red body, black wings with no bars, crossed bill. I had watched it for several minutes when Stan Long arrived and was able to confirm it as well. It has not been seen since, but I will report it, if it returns. The irruption of White-winged Crossbills was evident in the flocks that visited my yard many times this winter. They came in large and small flocks calling clearly. I looked for wing bars on this evening's visitor, but there were none. I believe that it was an adult Female. It was on a tree very near the road. At 4:00 I also saw the Great Grey Owl thanks to the crows that were mobbing it behind # 2182. It was quite far and landed on a tree and then quickly took off. Great Grey Owl (From Connie Deynes message): Take Hwy 417 and exit at Innes Road (east). Turn right (south) on Frank Kenny Road. Go past French Hill and Regimbald roads and turn left on Giroux. The stand of deciduous trees is on the north side at a slight bend in the road just east of the LaFarge Pit and behind #2182. Snowy Owl: Take Hwy 416 and exit at Innes Road (east). Turn right (south) on Frank Kenny Rd. Turn left (east) on French Hill and turn right on O'Toole. It is between French Hill and Regimbald. It was actively listening for prey. It then flew across the road and perched in the trees on the left. Of all the Great Gray owl reports over the last 3 weeks, this owl (supposing there is the one owl) seems to be spotted the most based on Ontbird reports. W.H. Ottawa, Ontario. Directions: Directions from Ottawa: Take Hwy 417 east and exit right at Trim Line. Continue up the hill past the Tim Hortons until you get to Innes road. Turn left at Innes and continue for short distance until Frank Kenny road. Turn right on Frank Kenny and continue past streets like French Hill and Regimbald. Giroux is the street after Regimbald. Turn left on Giroux. Soon you will come to the Lafarge quarry (there are signs). According to previous reports the Great Gray owl has been seen from the Lafarge quarry area to about house #2182 on Giroux.
