This is the first confirmed observation in Algonquin Park this winter. If it follows the pattern of all the Great Gray Owls seen here during last winter's irruption, this bird will not be seen again (but time will tell). Great Gray Owls appeared to move steadily through the Park last winter, probably in response to a shortage of available prey. As always, I would appreciate hearing about any subsequent sightings of this owl, and your other bird observations in Algonquin Park, for the Algonquin Visitor Centre database. Thanks. Good birding. X-BeenThere: ontbirds@hwcn.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 23 Jun 2005 23:46:22 - After the oppressive heat of the preceding week, both birds and birders became more active again at Presqu'ile Provincial Park during the past week, with a good deal of bird song taking place, as well as a certain amount of dispersal within the Park of birds that had remained on their breeding territories for a number of weeks. There was only one Common Loon sighted recently, but a Red-necked Grebe, first noted on June 19 in Popham Bay, was still present on June 23. According to /Birds of Presqu'ile Provincial Park/ (1993), this is the first summer occurrence of that species at Presqu'ile. Within the past two days, three species of heron have flown past the lighthouse: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, and Black-crowned Night-Heron. A Northern Shoveler was off Gull Island on June 23. After an absence of over six weeks, Green-winged Teals re-appeared on the south end of the beach on June 20 and have gradually been increasing in number since then, reaching seven birds on June 23. Offshore in that area, up to three male scaup have been present on any given day. Two observers independently regarded them as probably Greater Scaup. An Osprey at the lighthouse on June 19 and a pair of Barred Owls in Jobes' Woods in broad daylight on June 18 were the only raptors seen in the Park during the past week. A Sora was heard near Owen Point on June 19. The tail end of the spring shorebird migration was represented by a Ruddy Turnstone on June 20, a Red Knot from June 19 - 22 (probably a record late date), three White-rumped Sandpipers, and Dunlins on several dates from June 19 - 23. A Bonaparte's Gull on beach 1 on June 23 was the first there since late May. Yellow-billed Cuckoos were found in three widely separated places in the eastern half of the peninsula from June 18 - 20. Two Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers were seen along the path south of the beach 3 parking lot, where another had been seen a few weeks ago. Unquestionably, the highlight of the week was a male Prairie Warbler found singing in the eastern portion of the calf pasture on June 20, the first summer record for Presqu'ile. Although the solstice was not to arrive until the following day, it seems more likely that this is a summering bird than a spring migrant and there is a high probability that it is still in the area, which has habitat that is typical for the species. Birders who are able to hear and recognize its high-pitched song might profitably search the area south of 46 Bayshore Road, where the bird was first discovered. In the same general area, at least one of the following birds was also seen this week: Eastern Towhee, Clay-colored Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Orchard Oriole. The latter was also seen near the Owen Point trail parking lot on June 21. To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds there. [Ontbirds]Painted Bunting - Normandale - Update!!!!
Further to Cheryl Edgecombe's posting earlier today, after an hour and one-half delay, the Painted Bunting was sighted again at the feeder at 12:30 P.M. It fed for about five minutes and thrilled about a dozen birders. Good luck and good birding. Dennis & Gwen Lewington and Carl Hamann Painted Bunting courtesy Ron Ridout: Directions to the Hidden Valley campground are: Highway 24 south through Simcoe, bearing west around the curve at Young's Creek. Travel west on 24 to Regional Rd. 10. Turn south (left from the east, right from the west) towards Turkey Pt. Travel south past 2 concessions and the entrance to Turkey Pt Provincial Park (on the left). Just south of the entrance to the provincial park, turn east (left) on the Front Rd. (I don't think it is signed but I believe there is a sign pointing left to Normandale). Travel 2.2 kms. east as the Front Rd winds through the forest and then down the hill into Normandale. Near the bottom of the hill you will come to Moles Road on the north (left) side that bears diagonally back to the northwest. Turn left on this road and travel to the second driveway on the right (200 metres). This is the well signed entrance to the Hidden Valley campground. Drive down this long driveway to the main office and park in the parking area on the left side of the office. Remember to check in at the office and pay the parking fee. To the left of the office and public parking is the main driveway into the campground itself. After leaving the office, walk around the yellow traffic gate. Walking up this driveway, you will come almost immediately to a brown washroom building on the right. Just past this building, the driveway splits. It was doing a rather poor job, with the whinny barely descending in tone. It was followed by one run of the "toot toot toot" call, this time done by the book (or the CD-ROM). We have a resident Screech Owl in the neighbourhood, but it has never sung at mid-day. I really don't think it was a birder testing his new talents - any person would have given up long before the owl did. My question is: could this be a recently independent first-year male setting up a territory? If the behaviour is repeated, I'll inform ONTBIRDS. My address is 929 St. Louis Ave., Windsor. From mid-neck down, it is now in non-breeding plumage but the head still retains a vestige of it's former glory. The peak still remains on the top of the head and some yellow breeding plumes continue to be visible on the still solidly black head. The bird was in the middle cell today. As well, there was Black Duck, RingNecked, Am Widgeon, Ruddy, Coot, Pied Billed and ever increasing numbers of Cormorants and Great Blue Herons. The usual shorebirds to be expected are present. Exeter lagoons are a mile and a quarter to the west of the intersection of highways 4 and 83 approximately 30 miles north of London in Exeter. Turn south at the cemetery which is Airport Line road and drive to the second gate on the left. Park without blocking the entrance and walk in. Just a reminder that you are required to possess and display on your dashboard an annual permit that is obtained at the town office during business hours at no cost. Town office is at the intersection of Main St and Sanders St. Good Birding.. Rick Thornton

Band-tailed Pigeon - London
Saturday, January 3, 2004 We, along with Bill & Heather Wilson and Maris, Penny & Emily Apse had excellent views of the Band-tailed Pigeon this morning. After arriving around 10 A.M. there was no action until the Cooper's Hawk landed in the sycamore tree at 10:40 A.M. It didn't hang around long and flew out over the house (#120). At 11:10 A.M. the Band-tailed Pigeon flew in across the yard of house (#120) and landed in the maple above the high feeder. It sat until 11:25 and then flew down and landed on the high feeder. It sat on the edge of the feeder until 11:37 A.M. without taking one seed to eat. (Perhaps it was still full from the 213 sunflower seeds it ate yesterday) It flew up into the sycamore tree, and perched there. We left at 11:40 A.M. Directions are as posted by Peter Read yesterday. As an added interest, we drove to Long Point and saw 62 Sandhill Cranes. They were on the north side of Regional Road #42, just west of the West Quarter Line Road.
