Hi Birders, The bird is still in LaSalle Park Burlington, at the parking end where the trail starts up to 80 meters on the trail. There was over 20 birders between 11:30 - 1:30 pm. The bird has been seen at least 4 times during this time. It is a male. Photos taken. [Ontbirds] Bald Eagle Toronto
Hi All, Today on February 15th at 12:30 PM at Eglinton Flats Park, Toronto, my son and I spotted an adult Bald Eagle. We watched the bird for around 5 minutes as it circled above us at a height of about 200 meters. The Eagle flew West. This has been my first sighting of the Bald Eagle in this area, in which I have been birding since 1999. Directions: South-East corner of intersection of Eglinton Ave. West and Jane Street. [Ontbirds] Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto 25 May
Hello Birders, One flock of 19 Whimbrels in fly. Hundreds of Dunlins, several flocks, the biggest well over a hundred was at the SE end. Semipalmated Plover 6 on small island on the bay together with Dunlins. Semipalmated Sandpiper several between Dunlins. I have met one lonely Dunlin, with time we were 5 meters of distance, which allow me to take great photos, it was cripple. Least and Willow Flycatcher were calling in several places. Great Egrets are building nests (3). New heronry of Black-Crowned Night Herons is greatly increasing, compering to last year ( west of the road, a few hundreds meters north of bridge). On the “Wet Wood” I was shortly: Am. Redstart, Black–Throated Blue Warbler, Swamp Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager (male), Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern-Wood Pewee, Swainson’s Thrush, Common Yellowthroat. May trip lasts from 9:30 to 6:15 PM. The list of birds 51. 200 hundreds photos taken, the best: Dunlin and flocks of Dunlins in fly. Hello, My first Great Crested Flycatcher and Black-Throated Green Warbler sightings since I started birding at Eglinton Flats in 1999. Other noted sightings include: Blackburnian, Yellow-Rumped, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Eastern Kingbird, Blue-Headed Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Spotted Sandpiper (pair) A pair of Wood Ducks have been sighted since April 10th, possible nesting (three bird houses available). [Ontbirds] Eastern Towhee, Eglinton Flats Park Toronto
Hello, On Saturday, April 19 at 4 in the afternoon I spotted an Eastern Towhee male rummaging noisily among dead leaves for three hours. Two White-Throated Sparrows (white-stripped form) were also present. Birding at Eglinton Flats since 1999, this is my first sighting of an Eastern Towhee. Directions: Eglinton flats is located on the south east corner of Eglinton Ave. and Jane St. The bird was seen in the bushes on the south east corner of the tennis court’s fence. Hello Birders, I have seen it previously: 11/03, 11/07, 12/27 2013 and today at 4:30 PM. Throughout al of my years of birding at Eglinton Flats ( since 1999), I only spotted it one fall. The park is located at SE corner of intersection Eglinton Ave. and Jane St. Entering from the parking lot turn left along the path to the fork and make a right. The favourable Winter Wren spot is from here on out to the small bridge. Keep your ears open. [Ontbirds] Solitary Sandpiper Eglinton Flats Toronto
Hello Birders, Today I watched SOLITARY SANDPIPER on the log on Topham Pond near the island, after few minutes it flew to the south shore. Spotted Sandpiper came on May 6, one pair have a nest every year. Tree nest boxes: 31, 46, 50, (out of 22) were taken by American Tree Swallow, several by House Sparrow. Barn Swallow rebuild old nest under the roof of building. Field Sparrow is present on north side of tennis courts. Hi Birders, Smythe Park: Northern Rough-Winged Swallow (1), Winter Wren (1). Directions: Toronto, the entrance to the park is from Scarlett Rd. just south of Black Creek on the East side. Eglinton Flats: Brown Thrusher (2) – first time since 2002; White-Throated Sparrow (1), Hermit Thrush (1), Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (together with small flock of Golden-Crowned Kinglet). PS Red-Winged Blackbird females came late to Eglinton Park this year – April 14th (37 days later than the males, 9th of March). [Ontbirds] Virginia Rail, Eglinton Flats, Toronto
Hi Birders, Today ( Friday 29/03) at 6 p.m., one Virginia Rail has been spotted on the East shore of Topham Pond at Eglinton Flats. I watched the bird from a distance of 10 meters ( for about 2 minutes), and I had just packed my camera 3 minutes earlier! Half an hour later, I recorded its typical voice. Since 2002, I have noted over 130 species at Eglinton Flats, Virginia Rail for first time, today. Hi Birders, 300 plus Tundra Swans, probably a thousand of Canada Goose, a pair of Northern Pintail, Mallards, Am. Black Duck... We were there at about 3 PM, and watched the wetland for several minutes only, from the shoulder of 407 (practice not suggested). Closer, longer observations of this wetland will be done on the weekend. [Ontbirds] Red-Winged Blackbird in Toronto
Hi Birders, Today on March 9th at 4:30 PM, two first males Red-Winged Blackbirds were singing from the top of trees at Eglinton Flats. The date of their return could be between 4th and 8th March because my last visit in the park was on Sunday 3rd of March. Eastern Screech Owl is still present in the park since October 2012. Colonel Samuel Smith Park at 3:00-3:30 PM, Harlequin Duck female was about 150-200 m from shore on East side, diving constantly. [Ontbirds] Eastern Screech-Owl Eglinton Flats; report from Humber Bay East Park, Toronto
Hello Ontbirds, On 24 and 25 I have seen Eastern Screech-Owl in two nest boxes for wood ducks on Eglinton Flats. Both TRCA boxes are on the water/marsh apart from each other 200 m. Pictures taken. On 25 Humber Bay East Park: Ruddy Duck (60), Pied-Billed Grebe (1), only 1 pair of Scaup sp., Gadwalls (28 on ponds), American Black Duck (2), Bufflehead (about 20), Hooded Merganser (about 30), Red-Breasted Merganser (20 plus), Common Goldeneye (less than 10), Mallard ( less than 20), Long-Tailed Duck was the dominating waterfowl, Northern Mockingbird (1), American Goldfinch and House Finch in small flock, hybrid of Mallard (1, looks the same from 2012 winter) and others... Eglinton Flats is a small 9.3 ha park located at South-East corner of intersection of Jane St. and Eglinton Ave. Humber Bay East Park is at the South end of Park Lawn Rd. Hello Ontbirds, A pair of Harlequin Duck were present at Arkendo Park at 1:30 PM, about 300 hundreds meters from the shore. Directions: From QEW take Winston Churchill Blvd South, at Lakeshore Rd E turn right and after 100 m turn left, at the and of Arkendo Dr there will be small parking. Northern Shrike was present at Colonel Samuel Smith Park at 2:30 PM. The bird was at the East side shore of the bay were are the docks for yachts. Directions: Colonel Samuel Smith Park is located at the South end of Kipling Ave. in Toronto. [Ontbirds] Humber Bay Park East; Northren Mockingbird, Northren Pintail
Hello Ontbirds, Both, Northern Mockingbird and Northern Pintail are probably the same individuals from last year. Mockingbird sang for long time ( recorded). Domestic duck was also present, probably the same individual from last year. Gadwalls (20) occupied their eastern pond. There were Buffleheads ( the most common waterfowl), females of Red-Breasted Merganser, a few Long-Tailed Ducks and Mallards. I have met a family of birders, they show me ( on camera Canon) a great picture of Coopers Hawk taken near the bridge. For photographers: you can have easy and great pictures of Northern Mockingbird and Northern Pintail. Hello Ontbirds, On Thursday Nov. 8, about 4:30 pm I saw 8 White- Winged Crossbills in Pine Cliff Park. The small flock stopped on a tree just for one minute. Then they flew West. Directions: from Britannia Rd W. turn North, cross the bridge on Credit River and on lights turn left (West) to Kenninghall Blvd, after 200 m turn left to Pine Cliff Park Dr, drive 400 m and park on the small parking at the river North side. Hello Ontbirds, On Wednesday 24 Oct. ( sunny and warm day) about 11:30 AM I watched single Blue-Headed Vireo on maple between Topham and Little Pond. On Sunday 14 Oct. there were 14 Green-Winged Teals on Mimico Creek mudflats, Humber Bay Park East, Toronto. Directions: The park is at the South end of Park Lawn Rd. [Ontbirds] Moosonee 20-24 August 2012
Hello, We ( my son Jakub, Wojtek Grezlikowski and myself) visited: Charles, Moose Factory and Ship Sands Islands. First two islands we explored around and across, third, along the East shore ( 8 hours). We have noted total of 30 species ( Charles 17, Moose Factory 9, Ship Sands 13). The most common on all tree islands was SONG SPARROW. From others: GOLDEN EAGLE 2, NORTHERN RAVEN has been eating prey on the lamp ( Moose Factory); NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW 1, MERLIN 4 ( one has been chasing Greater Yellowlegs), SEMIPALMATED PLOVER 1, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER 1 ( Ship Sands). Mammals: Striped Skunk 1 ( Ship Sands), Black Bear 1 ( West shore on Moosonee River on the way to Ship Sands), Red Squirrel common ( Moose Factory, Charles Is.), Snowshoe Hare 1 (Moosonee) and BEARDED SEAL 2 ( male and female) on Charles Is. North shore. Both individuals were not scary of my presence and I could photographed them from the closest distance of 6 meters (Nikon D 200, Sigma 150-500 zoom). Jacek Pawlikowski, Toronto PS One day, a couple of Cree Indian visited us with a fresh dish of Sturgeon, it was the best taste which I have experience. I am an avid angler since childhood, but only Native can fish for Sturgeon.
