[birdalert] Welcome to the new Ontbirds

2020-07-18 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirds Subscribers,

OFO is happy to announce the launch of our revamped Ontbirds email listserv
and new Birdnews listserv for sharing provincially rare bird sightings and
bird-related news with fellow birders across the province.

Both listservs are available free-of-charge and available to all who are
interested as a service to birders in Ontario. You do not need to be an OFO
member to subscribe.

*What has changed?*

Ontbirds has been split into two listservs: Ontbirds for rare bird
announcements and Birdnews for all other posts. All Ontbirds subscribers
have been automatically subscribed to Birdnews. Users can opt out of one or
both listservs, or change one or both to daily digests in the setup pages
(see below for instructions).

*Ontbirds *is now reserved for provincially rare bird announcements (RBAs)
only, so birders across the province can quickly alert each other to the
presence of a rare bird worth travelling to see.

*Birdnews* is intended for less time-sensitive news and information –
basically everything other than RBAs which was previously published in
Ontbirds should now be published on Birdnews. This includes: location
reports, hawk watch summaries, CBC reports, first of year reports, and
more.

*Ontbirds and Birdnews are open for use immediately!*

Before posting, we ask you to please review the updated posting guidelines
at http://www.ofo.ca/site/content/listserv-guidelines on the OFO website
under Finding Birds.

To send Ontbirds alerts, email: birdalert@ontbirds.ca.

To post an announcement on Birdnews, email: birdn...@ontbirds.ca.

*COVID-19 Precautions*

Please abide by local and provincial COVID-19 regulations regarding
physical distancing and non-essential travel when you are birding.

*Meet the Ontbirds and Birdnews Moderators*

Mike Burrell and Carter Dorscht are taking over as moderators of the
listservs from Mark Cranford, who coordinated Ontbirds for close to 20
years! Thank you, Mark, for your amazing contribution!

To contact our new moderators, send an email to birdal...@ofo.ca or
birdn...@ofo.ca, respectively.

*Mike Burrell*

Mike's been a birder since he was a kid growing up outside of Waterloo.
He's passionate about community science projects like eBird and iNaturalist
and has many volunteer roles related to birds including coordinating eBird
review and Christmas Bird Count data quality in Ontario and serving as a
voting member and archivist on the Ontario Bird Records Committee. Mike and
his brother Ken recently authored the book Best Places to Bird in Ontario.
Mike works as a zoologist with the Ontario Natural Heritage Information
Centre (part of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) and is
based out of Peterborough.

*Carter Dorscht*

Carter is an avid birder, living in Echo Bay, which is just outside of
Sault Ste. Marie. While always being interested in nature, he bit the
birding bug about five years ago and hasn't looked back. He is an eBird
Regional Reviewer for the Algoma District, coordinates local Christmas Bird
Counts, and participates in a variety of other community science
programs. Carter works for The Kensington Conservancy, a non-profit land
trust, where he manages ecologically sensitive lands for their protection
in perpetuity. He also leads guided birding tours throughout the Algoma
District on the side.

[Ontbirds] Announcement: Passing of George Peck

2020-06-24 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

It is with sadness that the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) would like
to acknowledge the death of George Peck, recipient of the OFO's
Distinguished Ornithologist award in 2001.

George Peck has been a prominent ornithologist in Ontario for over 50
years. He is recognized for his work at the Royal Ontario Museum with the
Ontario Nest Records Scheme, which he built into a major monitoring system
of the breeding biology of Ontario birds.

George has contributed much to the scientific knowledge of Ontario birds
through papers in North America’s leading ornithological journals. He
authored eight species accounts in the first Atlas of the Breeding Birds of
Ontario. George co-authored with Jim Richards a chapter on early Oologists
in Ornithology in Ontario in 1987. He co-authored with Ross James volume 1
in 1983 of the Breeding Birds of Ontario, Nidiology and Distribution:
Nonpasserines. The Passerines in volume 2 was published in 1987. Both
volumes were updated in seven installments in Ontario Birds.

George was appointed a Research Associate in Ornithology at the Royal
Ontario Museum in 1976. He is an active member of many international,
national, provincial and local organizations, some since 1939.

George is a well known wildlife photographer with a penchant for birds. His
images have been published in 88 books, magazines and journals. George’s
quest is to photograph every North American bird species.

George will be honoured with an article celebrating his life and
accomplishments in the August issue of Ontario Birds.

His obituary can be found here:

https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/theglobeandmail/obituary.aspx?n=george-kelday-peck=196377848

Sincere condolences to George's family at this very sad time,

[Ontbirds] OFO Call Notes: Extension of the Birding at Home Challenge and Upcoming Events

2020-06-07 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello all,

This is a long edition of Call Notes. We have a lot to talk about and some
exciting announcements of upcoming events.

First, we want to acknowledge that this is a difficult time for many of us
and that world events are affecting our birding community and beyond. This
past week has shone a light on the issue of racism and birding.

We went back to OFO’s Mission Statement and the first of OFO’s core values
is: “Inclusion of all people with an interest in birds and birding,
regardless of their expertise”. We need to clarify this statement to show
the OFOs commitment to include * all people equally*, regardless of race,
ethnicity, age, ability, gender, or sexual orientation.

The board is carefully considering OFO’s response and steps we will take to
show leadership in the birding community. In upcoming communications to
our members and the Ontario Birding Community as a whole, we will address
these important issues and how the OFO will translate them into concrete
actions to remove barriers which prevent people from birding.

In the meantime, we all have a lot of birding and learning to look forward
to!

Lynne Freeman

OFO President

[Ontbirds] OFO COVID-19 Update: June Field Trip and Convention Cancellations

2020-05-28 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
We hope this message finds you all well. Sadly, our province is still in
the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and this has necessitated further
cancellations.

*June Field Trips and Annual Convention*

Since the situation continues to be uncertain, the OFO Board has decided to
cancel all June field trips. We have also made the difficult decision to
cancel this year’s convention, which was to take place September 25-27th in
Peterborough. It is unlikely that a gathering of 250 people will be allowed
then.

*What we are doing instead*

Our June workshops will be going online, so you can still enjoy learning
about birds from OFO experts. Details will be announced soon. We will also
be highlighting places to safely bird during the summer on our Facebook
page and website. If you choose to go birding, please follow federal,
provincial and municipal guidelines regarding COVID-19 as restrictions on
non-essential travel, physical distancing and party size are still in
effect and subject to change.

We are looking at other options for our convention, including online
involvement for members. Our convention is also OFO’s AGM and this year we
will hold it online. We plan to hold the 2021 convention in Leamington and
the 2022 convention in Peterborough.

More information will be coming in Call Notes.

*Ontbirds Reboot*

With the continued uncertainty, we have decided to hold of on posting of
rare bird sightings on Ontbirds for a little while longer. However, our
plan to split Ontbirds into two Listservs is well under way. One Listserv
will be exclusively for rare bird alerts and the second for all other
matters including regional reports, hawk watch results, and announcements.

Thanks for your continued support during this difficult time.

I received this announcement today from Lindsay Rodger, Acting
Superintendent of Point Pelee National Park. Thought this would be of
interest to birders near Point Pelee.

Please remember that tf you choose to go birding, please follow federal,
provincial and municipal guidelines regarding COVID-19 as restrictions on
non-essential travel, physical distancing and party size are still in
effect and subject to change.

COVID-19 Pandemic Response - Changes to Ontbirds Posting Policy

This has been a challenging time for us all. Last week, we announced
changes to the Ontbirds Posting Policy. We received passionate responses
both for and against the changes. We appreciate hearing what you think as
we try to navigate these unprecedented events.

Here is the announcement in full:

In the ongoing response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Ontario, the OFO Board
has mandated the following changes to the Ontbirds posting policy,
effective immediately. These changes are in support of local, provincial,
and federal policies related to COVID-19.

In addition to the existing suppression of rare bird reports, Ontbirds will
no longer distribute reports of any bird sightings, including first-of-year
reports and regional reports. This policy has been adopted to discourage
travel for birding. At the same time, OFO recognizes that it is extremely
important to continue to report sightings in eBird, provided that you are
following all local, provincial and federal guidelines while birding.

Ontbirds will continue to publish communications from OFO. Other birding
organizations are encouraged to use Ontbirds to communicate with Ontario’s
birding community. For the duration of the COVID-19 outbreak, however, the
Ontbirds Moderator and OFO Board will review communications prior to
posting.

Thanks for your understanding during this time.

Conservation Awareness – Update Regarding the Proposed Cormorant Hunt
Reuven Martin, OFO’s Director of Conservation Awareness

No decision on the cormorant hunt yet: the 2020 Ontario hunting regulations
have been published, and the proposed Double-crested Cormorant season is
listed only as “pending”. Hunting of this species is still not permitted
for the time being, but any updates will be published at
ontario.ca/page/hunting-notices-and-updates.

April Ontario Birds will be Mailed Next Week

As announced by Chris Risley in Ontbirds, the April issue of Ontario Birds
will be mailed to OFO members next week. It looks like this will be another
great issue – jam-packed with original research and observations by
Ontario’s birders.

Reminder: Princeton University Press Discount for OFO Members

If you haven’t had a chance already, please check out the books published
by Princeton University Press at
https://press.princeton.edu/books?subjects[]=22671 and enter the discount
code BIRD30.

We want to hear from you!

[Ontbirds] OFO Call Notes: COVID-19, trip cancellations, and some good news

2020-04-03 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
*April 3, 2020*

*More about birding and COVID-19*

We hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe during this difficult
time. Like all organizations, OFO is constantly monitoring the COVID-19
situation and has taken further decisions in response to the ongoing
crisis. We are doing what we can to flatten the curve.

*Until further notice, OFO does not endorse travelling for birding or
birding in groups of any size as per municipal, provincial, and federal
guidelines.*

Rarities tend to attract crowds. If a rarity is reported, please think
twice about going to see the bird. Can you view it safely, distant from
others? We all know that it is difficult to maintain proper physical
distancing when observing birds at close quarters, so please be careful.

Despite these limitations, we can still enjoy the spring migration wherever
we are — in our backyards, from our balconies, or during our daily walks.
This is also an excellent time to brush up on our birding skills and
knowledge in preparation for the time — hopefully in the not too distant
future — when we can go birding once more.

*OFO Publications Available to all on ofo.ca !*

Normally, only OFO members can access the most recent two years of our
publications on our website. The Board has decided to remove access
restrictions on OFO News and Ontario Birds for the duration of this crisis
so *all* birders can enjoy our publications and learn more about Ontario’s
birds. These publications are now available to everyone on our website at
ofo.ca. Please spread the word and enjoy.

I want to thank the people who made this possible, especially Ivor Williams
who spend many hours building the technology and Judie Shore who helped
greatly with the effort.

To access our publications, go to *ofo.ca ,* select the
Publications option from the menu, then the publication you want to read.
You will see the cover page of all back issues. Select the issue you are
interested in reading in your browser. Please note that the most recent two
years are in a Flipbook format, while older issues are in PDF format.

This is new technology and there may be glitches. Please let us know what
you think at *o...@ofo.ca *.

*OFO Field Trips Cancellation*

Sadly, all OFO field trips up to and including May 18th are cancelled.
Martin and Kathy Parker are working to reschedule the Pelee Island trip to
a date in October.

The June 5/6 trip to the Bruce Peninsula is cancelled as well.

We are monitoring the situation closely and may need to cancel further
trips depending on the status of the COVID-19 outbreak.

*Birdathon Postponed*

The Birdathon to raise money for Birds Canada and OFO will take place in
the Fall. We will let you know more when the details are available.

*Hillman Marsh Shorebird Nights Cancelled*

Hillman Marsh Shorebird Nights are cancelled. OFO volunteers will not be
helping visitors identify shorebirds this year.

*Princeton Books Discount for OFO Members*

Finally, we have some good news for OFO members!

Princeton University Press is offering members of Ontario Field
Ornithologists a 30% discount on birding field guides, photographic guides,
reference works, and products (such as illustrated birding checklists,
calendars, and flash cards). To do some armchair shopping (and birding),
visit PUP's website at *https://press.princeton.edu/books?subjects[]=22671*

and
enter code *BIRD30*.

*We want to hear from you!*

Your feedback is important — please write to me at lynnef...@gmail.com or
anyone else on the board to share your thoughts.

We are in this together.

[Ontbirds] OFO Call Notes: More on COVID-19 and something to look forward to

2020-03-26 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
*COVID-19 and Birding in Ontario*

Last week, we made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel all field
trips up to and including April 19th. We, like everyone in this province,
are monitoring the unfolding situation and will cancel further activities
if necessary. You can read the full text of our statement on our
website at *ofo.ca
*.

Most of us look forward all year to birding during the spring migration but
this year it is looking more and more likely that we will not be able to
view the spring migration in our usual haunts. Federal, provincial and many
municipal parks are closed. The Beamer Hawk Watch has been cancelled for
the season and we are watching the situation for the May Birding Festivals,
including the Festival of Birds at Point Pelee.

Birding doesn’t have to stop entirely though. Even though opportunities are
limited we can spend this time getting to know our local patch – be it an
apartment balcony or backyard or even the view outside your window. It’s a
great time to practice your song ID and to observe the fascinating
behaviour of your local birds as they setup territories. Don’t forget to
record your sighting in eBird!

*OFO News arriving soon!*

OFO News was mailed to OFO members last week, including those whose
memberships lapsed in December. Once again, we apologize for the lateness
of the issue. We have taken steps to change our process to ensure that OFO
News goes out on schedule.

This issue is extra-long and filled with fantastic articles. Here’s a taste
of what’s included.

· Ontario Atlas coordinator Mike Cadman outlines what the next
Ontario Bird Atlas from 2021 through 2025 is all about — while issuing a
call for the province’s birders to volunteer in the crucial citizen science
part of the project.

· Lynne Freeman focuses on a common and perhaps overlooked species,

[Ontbirds] OFO's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

2020-03-19 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Dear birders and OFO members,

In accordance with medical recommendations, the OFO Board has decided to
cancel OFO field trips up to and including the Algonquin Park field trip on
April 19. We will contact all registrants and refund all registration fees,
but please bear with us as we work through the refund process, which may
take some time. We’ll be assessing further cancellations as the COVID-19
situation unfolds.

We all need to do our bit to flatten the curve and prevent transmission of
COVID-19 to our communities. Happily, we can all practice social distancing
and safe hygiene while birding. Please be especially careful while viewing
rarities which can attract crowds. Please stay at least six feet apart and
keep your visits short to avoid the build-up of larger numbers of viewers.

Luckily for us, birding is a great activity during this time. Getting
outside in nature is good for our mental health! For me, even something as
simple as sitting in my backyard listening to the local House Finch, House
Sparrows, cardinals, and migrating robins (yes, I live in downtown Toronto)
reminds me that life goes on and this pandemic will pass.

Don’t forget to record your sightings in eBird and pass on any news of
rarities or interesting sightings to your fellow birders via Ontbirds and
other channels. We wish you, your families and friends well during these
difficult times. Please stay safe and healthy.

Good Birding,

Lynne

[Ontbirds] Reminder: Hawk Owl Viewing Rules

2019-12-23 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello all,

For anyone planning to visit the hawk owl (now called Logito), please
remember to follow the rules in place to ensure the owl's and viewer's
safety.

Unfortunately, there were reports from several sources that people were
going off path, getting too close to the owl and preventing it from
retrieving its prey, and even ripping down the no parking signs. And, those
who reminded others about the rules were harassed.

This is a wonderful bird but viewing and photographing it is a privilege.
Please, respect the needs of the owl for space, don't trample the
incredible marsh and be considerate of the town and its residents who are
going out of their way to provide access to the owl.

Good birding,

Lynne Freeman

[Ontbirds] Hawk Owl Update and Viewing Rules

2019-12-19 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello Birders,

This is the latest news from Schomberg on the Hawk Owl situation. As most
of us are aware, the large number of observers who've gone to see the owl
has caused unsafe conditions for all concerned.

The town of Schomberg consulted with the MNR, the York Regional Police, the
group managing the marsh (which is protected land) and others. They have
put the following measures in place to ensure the safety of all concerned
so we can continue to enjoy this marvelous bird.

1.Parking is not allowed on the road adjacent to the owl. Please
respect the no-parking signs. Short-term parking is available at nearby
local malls but be mindful that this is the busiest shopping season of the
year and merchants need to ensure that there is parking space for their
customers.

2.Observers can easily view the owl from the road. Space has been freed
up for observers because parking has been moved elsewhere.

3. The marsh where the owl is hunting is protected habitat. Observers are
asked not to trespass on the marsh.

4.Observers should obey the usual road safety rules. Do not stand or
setup tripods in the middle of the road. Do not run after the owl if it
crosses the road. This is unsafe and likely not great for the owl as it
tries to hunt.

We've heard reports of baiting. I know there's a lot of debate as to
whether this harms owls but baiting near a busy road is probably not a good
idea because of the risk of an owl traffic accident.

The situation seems to be under control for now. Today there were about 20
observers, and all followed the rules. Great news! Needless to say, the
town and York Regional Police will be monitoring the area to ensure that
the safety measures are followed.

In my opinion, the town has been exemplary in its desire to accommodate
visitors while ensuring the safety of the owl, observers and people using
the road. As you can all imagine, the popularity of this owl has been a big
surprise for the town!

Good Birding and Happy Holidays,

Lynne

[Ontbirds] Response to Hawk Owl Posting and reminder to follow OFO Code of Ethics

2019-12-18 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontario Birders,

We have received quite a lot of feedback about last week's report of the
Hawk Owl and the large number of people who subsequently went to view the
owl.

We have heard concern about possible harm to the bird, the surrounding
habitat and effects on residents because of crowding the bird, trampling
the surrounding vegetation and lack of consideration of non-birders who
also use the road.

We want to remind all observers to follow the guidelines in OFO's Code of
Ethics at: http://www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/aboutus.ethics when observing
the bird (or any other birds). Please do not risk harm to the bird, respect
property rights and be considerate of other observers and the local
residents. We can all enjoy the bird without damaging the surrounding
environment and upsetting others.

The OFO Board will be reviewing our Code of Ethics and reporting policies,
particularly with regard to owls at our January meeting. Please send any
and all feedback to me at lynnef...@gmail.com. We really want to hear from
you.

Good birding,

Lynne

[Ontbirds] OFO Call Notes: Registration for Gull Celebration Weekend, Paperless Initiative, Convention Appreciations

2019-10-09 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
*October 9, 2019*

*Gull Celebration Weekend – November 30 – December 1*

*Registration is now open for the Gull Celebration Weekend
at ofo.ca/site/page/view/events.gull-celebration
*

We have a full slate of events coming up at the Gull Celebrarion Weekend.
On Saturday morning, Bob Highcock from the Peninsula Field Naturalists will
be leading a field trip at Port Weller East. This gem of a hotspot has a
varied habitat with passerines, marsh and water birds all possible.
Registration is optional but preferred.

This year we have a special guest -- Amar Ayyash, an eminent gull
specialist from Chicago. Amar will be giving a hands-on Gull ID workshop on
gull ID and speaking along with Justin Peter at the Gull Quiz on Saturday
afternoon. The Gull ID workshop is open to OFO members only, costs $30.00
and is limited to 25 participants. Registration is also required for the
Gull Quiz since seating in the room is limited.

Last, but not least, please join Amar, Jeremy Bensette, Amanda Guercio and
Marcie Jacklin on Sunday's Gull Field trip along the Niagara River. Will we
find 10 species of gulls this year?

Special rates are available until October 28th at the Ramada Hotel by the
River in Niagara Falls. To reserve, phone 905-358-, press 0 and ask for
the OFO block of rooms.

*OFO is going Paperless!*

OFO is launching several initiatives to reduce the amount of paper we use
and streamline administration. This will reduce our costs and the time
spent on processing memberships and registrations. It will also be more
convenient and faster for you.

*What is changing?*

When you join, renew, donate or register online you will need to pay
online via a secure credit card transaction. For those of you who are
uncomfortable with paying online, we will provide links to the appropriate
forms which you can mail in with your cheque. We do urge you to pay online
- it's fast and secure.

Starting next year, OFO News will be published electronically in addition
to the paper version. We are using a "flipbook" format which will make
reading OFO News online a similar experience to reading a magazine in your
hands. We encourage all of you to select the online version when you renew
your membership. You will have the option to switch back to paper at any
time.

OFO is going paperless slowly and we will provide options for those who are
not comfortable with the electronic processes. We hope though, that you
understand the need for and support the OFO paperless initiative.

*Single-Use Plastic*

We have received several questions about the single-use plastic wrapper
used to protect OFO News and Ontario Birds in the mail. We value this
feedback and are analyzing the cost of various alternatives.

*Convention Appreciation*

A lot of birders – 247 to be exact – alighted in Hamilton for the OFO
Convention, September 27-29th. The Hamilton Naturalists’ Club shared their
territory with great generosity. Highlight birds included a Cattle Egret
and the jaeger display on Sunday. You’ll be able to read all about it in
October’s OFO News which will be arriving in your mailbox later in October.

A huge thank you to the convention team and everyone who participated! It
was a fantastic weekend.

Good birding,

Meet at 8:00am at the carpool lot at the St. Joseph Island turnoff (corner
of Highway 17 and 548). We will travel onto St. Joseph Island, stopping at
a variety of birding locations. We will spend time at the Fort St. Joseph
National Historic Site, which requires a $3.90 entrance fee. There will be
some medium length hikes throughout the day. A spotting scope is
encouraged. Bring food and water. We will be targeting early fall migrant
songbirds and waterfowl.

*Payment System not Working – For Now*

Due to changes in government regulation and reporting for Canadian
companies, PayPal has not been able to accept OFO payments. We are in
communications with PayPal and hope to resolve this extremely frustrating
situation very soon. In the meantime, online payment for the Young Birders
Camp and Convention is not available. We will announce when payment is back
online.

*Code of Ethics Feedback – Keep your feedback coming*

I was heartened to get several emails with constructive feedback on the
Code of Ethics and suggestions for improvements. Please continue to send
your feedback – birding and bird photography ethics is important and
affects us all and the birds we observe. We will report the feedback and
recommendations for improvement at the convention.

*Volunteers Needed*

As a volunteer organization we are in constant need of volunteers! Right
now, we have a need for people with IT, social media, marketing and writing
skills. Please email me at lynnef...@gmail.com to find out how you can be
part of OFO.

Good Birding,

2018-06-27 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
I'm pleased to announce that OFO is sponsoring a camp for young birders
aged 13-18 in Algonquin Park the last week of August. This follows on from
last year's successful pilot. Counsellors include Jeff and Angela
Skevington, myself, Jeremy Bensett, Ian Shanahan, and Jamie Spence.

The OFO Young Birders Camp is an immersive birding and naturalist
experience for teenagers aged 13-18. The overnight camp will take place the
last week of August when biting insects have died down and fall migration
is peaking.

Campers will stay at the Wildlife Research Station, a private research
facility situated in a forest beside a lake off Hwy 60. Campers will learn
about the biodiversity of Algonquin Park, wildlife research, nature
interpretation and increase their observation skills.

Daily activities will include birding, herping, botanizing and mammal
tracking. Campers will have the opportunity to join park naturalists to
scout wolf packs, private tours of active research projects, go mothing and
practice photography and drawing. Each day will include free time for
private exploration, swimming and canoeing.

The cost of the camp is $700 for the full week.

Space is limited to 14 campers. To register please go to:

[Ontbirds] Trip Report: Breeding Birds of Evergreen Brickworks, Toronto

2018-06-19 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
6 birders joined co-leaders Lynne Freeman and Jack Alvo for the Breeding
Birds outing at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto on Saturday. This trip was
a joint event between OFO and the TOC.

Without leaving the path, we discovered the nests of many breeding birds:
American Robins, Baltimore Orioles, Warbling Vireos, Mourning Dove,
Grackle, House Sparrows, Purple Martins and Barn Swallows.

We enjoyed covert looks at fledgling Red-winged Blackbirds being fed as
they hid in the reeds. Other highlights included: finding the egg shells
from newly hatched Barn Swallows, learning about and observing breeding
bird biology, including fecal sacs and nest hiding strategies and perhaps
best of all, watching Chimney Swifts gliding across the pond for their
morning drink of water.

[Ontbirds] OFO Young Birders Birdathon

2018-05-27 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
A small group of young birders aged 11 to 13, accompanied by by Bill Gilmour,
Doug McCrae, Ian and Sofia Shanahan, Baxter Naday and Caoline Biel saw and
heard 127 species in Presqu'ile Park and local hots spots including the
Brighton Managed Wetlands. The birdathon began at 10:00 on Saturday and
finished at 10:00 Sunday.

The total was impressive because most of the birds were breeding birds.
Migrants were scarce on the ground. Highlights included a singing Lawrence's
Warbler, great views of a Barred Owl being chased by a Cooper's Hawk and a
Cattle Egret in breeding plumage.

Many thanks to Bill and Margaret for their hospitality and the use of their
yard for camping and many birds.

Please email me to find out more about the OFO Young Birders program and OFO in
general.

birdy part of the province.

[Ontbirds] Report on the OFO Young Birder Alan Wormington Memorial Camp July 13-16

2017-07-20 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Last weekend, 11 very enthusiastic and knowledgeable young birders, aged 13
- 17, attended OFO's Alan Wormington Memorial Camp for Young Birders.

The camp was held at the Wildlife Research Station off Highway 60. The camp
ran from Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. Jeff and Angela Skevington
led the camp with Lisa Bildy and myself helping with transportation and
logistics.

We are grateful to Algonquin Outfitters (http://algonquinoutfitters.com) for
sponsoring a canoe trip. They provided canoes, life preservers and paddles
and ferried the campers to Hailstone Creek where they could appreciate the
true wilderness and view nesting Sandhill Cranes, many other birds and a
river otter.

The bird tally for the weekend topped out at 98, an excellent total for
this time of year. Birds included most of the boreal specialties: Gray Jay,
Boreal Chickadee and Evening Grosbeak. We unfortunately missed Spruce
Grouse, not for lack of trying.

As well as birds, most of us got looks at the big three mammals: a wolf,
bears and moose.

Campers were able to accompany the small mammal researcher as she checked
the trap lines, got to learn about turtle research and got up close and
personal with Henry the Snapping Turtle. We went herping, learned about
mushrooms and botany, insects and general ecology to round out the
experience.

A huge thank you is due to Jeff and Angela and Lisa who made this possible,
as well as the camp advisory committee: David Milsom, Ian Shanahan, Justin
Peter, Caroline Biel, Isabel Apkarian, Jody Allair, Mark Peck and Lisa
Bildy. I'd also like to thank the Board for their support and OFO members
who have donated to support young birder activities.

We will be posting pictures on our Facebook page soon!

[Ontbirds] Nest Search Event at the Evergreen Brick Works on June 18th - cancelled

2017-06-14 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

So sorry about this but due to scheduling conflicts (and Father's Day) we
have had to cancel this years nest search trip to the Evergreen Brick Works
which was scheduled on Sunday.

I apologize and commit to doing this event next year. Even though the
organized event is not going ahead, I urge all of you to go and explore the
Brickworks. Last year we found 18 nests, including an Orchard Oriole nest
without straying from the path. If you go early you will be able to enjoy
watching swallows drink from the pond.

[Ontbirds] OFO Young Birders Shorebird Workshop - Aug 23

2014-08-23 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Six expert young birders and their parents participated in today's
Shorebird Workshop led by Dave Milsom at Schomberg and the sod farms in the
surrounding area. Although there weren't big numbers of birds we did manage
to locate 12 shorebird species: many Killdeer, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers, Least and Semi-palmated Sandpipers, several
Pectoral Sandpipers, a solitary Solitary Sandpiper, Black-bellied, Golden
and Semi-palmated Plovers and the highlight of the day - a Baird's
Sandpiper foraging in a field. We learned many of the finer points of
shorebird plumage, foraging habits and calls.

Although we didn't find a Buff-breasted Sandpiper, we had a great day and
several people notched up new life birds for their lists.

We finished the day at Palgrave Conservation Area and enjoyed the
wildflowers, the forest and the sounds of tree frogs, Red-Breasted
Nuthatches and pewees.

Please email me if you are interested in joining an OFO Young Birders
outing or volunteering with the program.

2014-07-15 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
This message is posted with the permission of the ONTBirds moderator.

Hello ONTBirders,

Now that Spring migration is over it's time to register for the OFO
Convention!

This year's convention takes place in Ottawa from Friday, September 26 to
Sunday, September 28. The Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club organizing
committee has put together a great three-day program of field trips
including lots of activities for young birders.

We have two evening events planned. On Friday night, Bruce Di Labio will be
giving a presentation on the Birds of the Ottawa Region and Sarah Rupert
will be hosting Birding Jeopardy. At Saturday's banquet, our keynote
speaker will be Chris Earley of the Guelph Arboretum who will be speaking
about The Bird Teacher: How Birds are Nature's Ambassadors.

It's going to be a great convention!

Please register on the OFO website at:
www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/convention.programs and email me if you have any
questions.

Good birding,

Lynne

[Ontbirds] OFO Young Birders Breeding Bird Blitz - Tommy Thompson Park Toronto

2014-06-01 Thread Lynne Freeman via ONTBIRDS
Hello,

A small group of young birders enjoyed searching for breeding birds
and nests at the spit this morning. We saw or heard 55 species
including several late migrants such as Blackpoll Warblers, a female
American Restart and Swainson's Thrush.

We found several nests including a mostly completed Pewee nest, a
Warbling Vireo with a vireo nestled on the nest, Yellow Warbler,
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Eastern Kingbird and a Red-winged Blackbird
female feeding four hungry downy nestlings.

All sightings will be posted on eBird and the nest records will be
submitted to the Ontario Nest Records scheme and BSC Nest watch.

A big thank you to Nigel at the bird banding station for teaching us
about the Eastern Kingbird's red crown and some of the finer points of
understanding how old a bird is. Also thank you to Ian Sturdie who
passed on great tips on finding and recording nests.
