Northern Shrike House Finches

2003-11-23 Thread Markus J. Lise
My humble apologies to all the Fellow Birders in Ontario. I must have been
dreaming when I reported Northern Kite instead of Northern Shrike. Thank
you for all the inquiries and compliments on my reports even though I made a
mistake. And shortly after I finished my report I sighted 3 House Finches
on my feeder. The Northern Shrike by the way was sighted on the Lakeshore

him I was wondering even if he could have been a Loggerhead Shrike but I
know that would not have been possible.

CEDAR WAX WINGS GRAY CATBIRDS in Bowmanville Newcastle

2003-05-23 Thread Markus J. Lise
Hello Birding Friends,

We were very lucky this morning at my daughter Pauline's house on Chapel
St., Bowmanville. Not only did we see one elegant bird providing a visual
feast, but a flock of them were a gourmand's delight. Being the sociable
creatures who love to eat berries -they were eating lots of berries. The
two Mountain Ash trees in their yard became a banquet hall for the fattening
WAXWINGS, who were swarming like bees over the pendant fruit.

I was privileged to watch and listen to several GRAY CATBIRDS in my yard.
The males have been singing throughout the breeding season, mingling musical
renditions of all the birdsongs in the area with an amusing cacophony of
other sounds -shrieks, squeaks, whistles, cackles, as well as the cat's
meeeow from which the species derives its name.
They seem to be taking up a lively residence in one of our Cranberry Bushes.
There is often a squabble in our backyard signaling a resident CATBIRD
driving off a gray-feathered intruder of its own kind. Yet the CATBIRD is
amazingly tolerant of other species.

The BALTIMORE ORCHARD ORIOLES continue to dart in and out of our yard to
have a drink on the house. Sometimes we have as many as six eagerly
awaiting their turn and in between times when it is not too busy the RUBY
THROATED HUMMING BIRDS will hover or perch in a neighboring tree waiting
their turn. We also have a BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE now who loves to feed on
the ORIOLE/HUMMING BIRD feeders. This morning I saw what appeared to be a
young ORIOLE begging for food. Is that possible? I have seen ORIOLES
flying through with nesting materials but not any young ones. I shall try
to keep you informed.

Across the road from our house the EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE regularly darts out
from a perch to chase down passing insects. Much like the BLACK PHOEBES
they launch their attacks from the lower level branches in distinction from
the WESTERN WOOD-PEWEES who launches his attacks from the top branches of
trees.

The RED BELLIED, HAIRY DOWNY WOODPECKERS continue to take their turn on
the suit feeder whenever the EUROPEAN STARLING is not on it.

The ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAKS, BLUE JAYS, MOURNING DOVES, COMMON GRACKLES,
BROWN HEADED COW BIRDS and a few WHITE CABBAGE BUTTERFLIES have been passing
through the yard.

Throughout the last few weeks I have sighted two NORTHERN MOCKING BIRDS
nesting at Whitby Mental Health Center. Slowly the KILLDEER are coming back
too.

Directions: The CEDAR WAXWINGS are feasting at 9 Chapel St., Bowmanville.
Take Waverly exit to Bowmanville and follow the jog in the road to the right
by the second set of traffic lights and drive till the very end and turn
right and the first street is Chapel St. Turn right and the house is the
second last one on the left.

The other birds can be sighted by my house. Take Mill St. S. by Newcastle
and drive towards the lake. We are # 590.

And to reach Whitby Mental Health Center take Highway # 12 south to Victoria
and turn right to Gordon St. and drive on to property as far as north west
of the new building, the Forensic Unit Court.

GRAY CATBIRD too was helping himself in the Cranberry Bush.

BOBOLINKS were many in numbers by Whitby Mental Health Center in addition to
several WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS NORTHERN MOCKING BIRDS.

BALTIMORE ORIOLE by Newcastle

This morning when I woke up I heard and saw the first BALTIMORE ORIOLE
through my skylite window above my bed.

Last night I saw one of the prettiest sights in the heavens, a lovely
crescent moon with Earthshine. If there are clear skies tonight step
outside just after sunset and look west. Right next to the moon on the left
lies bright SATURN. Even a small telescope trained on SATURN will reveal
the planet's lovely rings. And a little higher up in the sky and a little
to the left is JUPITER with all her moons. Actually I was only able to see
3 of the usual 4. For more information go to www. spaceweather.com

10 GREAT BLUE HERONS in heronry north of Pickering

2003-03-17 Thread Markus J. Lise
Fellow Birders,

This weekend 10 GREAT BLUE HERONS arrived in their nesting places in the
heronry on Taunton Rd. west of Altona Rd. The dead one is still dangling
from one of the nests and has been hanging there for the entire winter. The
arrival according to a local resident is later this year compared to March
7, 2002 and February 28, 2001. The best place to view them is through a
scope from the corner of Altona Taunton.

Sighted 2 TRUMPETER SWANS on Whites Rd. in a corn field south of Taunton Rd.
I was able to befriend them with some corn and report the numbers on the
bands to Harry Lumsden. The other 2 TRUMPETERS of which we tagged banded
1 last week were swimming in the lake by the entrance of Lynde Shores
Conservation.

Directions: Turn off # 401 on Whites Rd. and drive north till Taunton Rd.
and turn west to drive beyond Altona.

101 WILD TURKEYS north of Bowmanville Orono

2003-03-09 Thread Markus J. Lise
Hi Everyone!

The WILD TURKEYS were close to the road this afternoon of the same field and
location as yesterday scratching the ground covered with manure and some
were perched up in the trees. At one point a WILD TURKEY flew up crossing
the road in front of us perching on a branch on the other side of the road.
It is amazing how tame they are.

I sighted 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, dead, blowing in the wind and dangling under
one of the nests in the top of the trees in the HERONRY on Taunton Rd. west
of Altona Rd. Does any one know how long it has been hanging there and how
we can get it down before the others return to use the nests again?

1 MERLIN caught a male NORTHERN CARDINAL in the air banging into the kitchen
window. We had some mixed feelings about that one. Last week our
neighbor's cat jumped up from the ground and caught a female HOUSE FINCH.

Directions: Take Taunton Rd. till you arrive between the turn offs of Orono
and Bowmanville. Take Taunton Rd. west through Oshawa till you pass Altona
Rd. and on the north side of taunton is the HERONRY.
