A Rock Wren was photographed and posted to the Facebook Group "Bird

the town of Glen Robertson which is northeast of Cornwall, almost at the
Quebec border. Apparently the bird has been present for "a while".

[ONTBIRDS] Slaty-backed Gull in Peterborough

2021-01-09 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Over the noon hour today Iain Rayner found an adult Slaty-backed Gull on
Little Lake in Peterborough. Don Sutherland and I were able to see it
before it flew north with a Herring Gull at 1:40 pm and observed many field
marks which were consistent with the identification to that species. To my
knowledge it has not been refound at this point despite some searching but
there aren't many places where gulls routinely congregate in Peterborough
at this time of year other than Little Lake (numbers usually peak around
lunch time each day with gulls gradually filtering away through the
afternoon). It's possible it will return in subsequent days but there is
daily turnover here and we speculate some of "our" gulls also visit places
on Lake Ontario such as Cobourg Harbour.

The bird was viewed from the Mark St. boat launch as well as from Edgewater
Boulevard.

[ONTBIRDS] Mew Gull at Niagara Falls

2020-11-24 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Jamie Spence has photographed an adult Mew Gull below the Horseshoe Falls
as of 8 am, November 24. I'm not sure of his exact vantage point. A scope
is likely necessary.

Parking along streets close to the falls is usually limited and/or very
expensive. Most birders opt to park at Dufferin Islands and walk down.

[ONTBIRDS] Variegated Flycatcher - November 17, yes

2020-11-17 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Multiple observers are reporting the Variegated Flycatcher along the
Brooklin Lions Wilderness Trail is present again this morning as of 0745
November 17.

Directions: Brooklin is in the north end of Whitby. From the intersection
of County Rd 12 (Baldwin Street) and Hwy 7 (which becomes County Rd
3/Winchester Rd to the east) go east for about 500 m to the Luther Vipond
Memorial Arena. Parking is available here. Walk south towards the large
white communications tower turning west (right) after the tennis courts and
skate park. There is a trail immediately west of here that goes over a
short wooden bridge. Follow this trail for about 400 m when it opens up a
bit and there is a bench. The flycatcher spent most of yesterday in this
general area, sometimes moving up the slope on the east side of the trail,
visible from the field on the other side. Approximate location:

Please consider wearing a mask while viewing the bird, especially if crowds
are forming.

[ONTBIRDS] Ottawa Bean Goose update (November 10)

2020-11-10 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
For those of you considering looking for the Bean Goose outside of Ottawa,
I thought I'd summarize some information that is scattered around in other
places online (mostly the Ontario Birds Discord server:
https://discord.gg/EXJ5S9e). If you're lucky enough to see it, please share
your sightings with others that may be looking.

Sightings to date:
November 8: The bird was initially found in Quebec at the Masson Settling
Ponds. This is just across the Ottawa River from Cumberland, Ontario. At
3:30 pm, the bird flew south into Ontario and was found shortly after
feeding in a farm field on the east side of Dunning Road, just south of
Cumberland. Shortly after 5pm, the bird flew north, presumably to roost for
the night

November 9: The bird was found just before 8 am in the same general area as
the previous afternoon feeding in a farm field off Dunning Road, south of
Cumberland with Canada Geese. At about 8:45, the bird was relocated
slightly southeast in a farm field off Sarsfield Rd, again with Canada
Geese. It was last seen about 1010 flying over quarry ponds on Giroux Road
near Navan, slightly further south. From about 10 am onwards, all geese in
the area were roosting on nearby water bodies. Geese began to head back to
fields to feed around 3:30 pm but it was not relocated.

November 10: The bird was seen briefly at the Giroux Road quarry pond at
about 1:45 pm but flew south out of sight.

Places to check:
Most of the geese seem to be following a predictable daily pattern: roost
overnight on water, head out to fields to feed at dawn, return to water
around 10 am, and then head back to fields to feed at about 3:30 until
dark. If you're looking during the middle part of the day, you are likely
best to focus on potential water roosts:

Masson Settling Ponds (in Quebec): https://ebird.org/canada/hotspot/L2825964

Ottawa River: birds may roost anywhere along here but about 1000 geese have
been present just east of Cumberland ferry.

Giroux Road quarry ponds: https://ebird.org/canada/hotspot/L1497745. You
can view both main ponds from Giroux Road, but there is also a third pond
further south that is not accessible. Based on the sightings yesterday and
today, this seems like a very likely spot the bird may be roosting.

Nolan Quarry pond: https://ebird.org/canada/hotspot/L7935337. A large
number of geese regularly roost here.

There are two other ponds to the west which may be worth checking:
https://ebird.org/canada/hotspot/L2187801 and
https://ebird.org/canada/hotspot/L676815

During "feeding time" (dawn and dusk) the best strategy is to probably
start south of Cumberland and check as many flocks of field-feeding geese
as possible in the short time window. If you have the ability, splitting up
to cover more ground is likely best. Checking fields near the Giroux Road
quarry ponds (or standing on the road watching geese leave the roost) may
also be a good strategy. There is probably only about an hour or two window
twice a day.

Identification:
The specific identification (Taiga vs Tundra Bean Goose) is still being
debated but both species are incredibly rare in Ontario and indeed in North
America. If you have **ANY** photos, please submit them to the Ontario Bird
Records Committee (obrcsecret...@gmail.com) for archiving and for reaching
out to goose experts for formal feedback.

Good luck!

Hi Mike,

Jay Solanki, here. We met a couple years ago on a tour you gave in Prince
Edward County. I hope you've been keeping well.

I'm writing because I believe I saw two Northern Wheatear a few hours ago
near Maryhill in Waterloo County. The birds flew off to the North West.

I wasn't sure if I should send you this sighting directly, or send it to
the ontbirds list. Regardless, I suspect area birders might want to
follow-up on it and your help is appreciated!

I've already posted the observation (including photos) to eBird and
iNaturalist:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/60839964
https://ebird.org/checklist/S74069591

I saw them at ~09:45 at this location: 43.522938, -80.363643

Let me know if I can send you any other information.

Best,
Jay

Re: [ONTBIRDS] Purple Gallinule at Blenheim Sewage Lagoons

2020-08-25 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Just a quick update on this bird. Steve Charbonneau reports that the bird
is continuing to be seen but disappears for stretches of time into the
patch of Phragmites.

The exact location I provided in the first email was incorrect, here's a
better description: as you walk northeast (away from the gate) between the
first two ponds, walk past the first pond on your right. You'll have to
keep walking a bit so you can look back towards the "bottom" (southwest
side) of the second pond on the right. Along that edge of the pond a patch
of Phragmites starts about 10 metres from the corner and continues for
about 40 metres. The bird disappears in this patch and periodically comes
down to the water and into the open to feed. Here's the location:
https://goo.gl/maps/LL4AXZd2GWDDqS1y6

To access Blenheim Sewage Lagoons you must have a permit issued by the
municipality. It's free, very easy to obtain (and usually very quick). Once
you are issued your permit you will be given the combo code for the gate
lock. To get a permit, email cki...@chatham-kent.ca and ask for one,
they'll then send you a blank permit that you must sign and return (by
email is fine). PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE LAGOONS WITHOUT A PERMIT, you may
be charged with trespassing and birders could lose access.

To reach the lagoons, head south on Hwy 3 from the town of Blenheim and
turn northwest (right if coming from town) onto Lagoon Rd. The lagoons are
on the right (north) side of the road. Birder access is by foot via the
small locked gate opposite house #19712. The gate is locked by a
combination lock (be sure to get the combination when you receive your
approved permit).

about 1km off shore from Port Darlington and had (presumably) a juv brown
booby fly past. Initially thought was a gannet, but seemed smallish and
overall brown without any sort of spotting. Underwing also brown without
black patch or other distinctive feature. Was about 30ft from the boat and
continued in a straight line to the east maintaining height about 5ft off
the water. It passed the boat at 1:12pm. "

If I hear any other details I'll post them here.

[ONTBIRDS] Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Windermere Basin (Hamilton)

2020-08-15 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was found at Windermere Basin yesterday (August
14) afternoon by Jon Pleizier and continues this morning (August 15).

Most of Windermere Basin is closed to public access but public vantage
points are accessed from the parking lot/trail off of Eastport Drive (
https://goo.gl/maps/Sv2feiywKLxPL5PL8). A spotting scope would be highly
beneficial.

[ONTBIRDS] Western Sandpiper at Windermere Basin (Hamilton)

2020-07-31 Thread Mike V.A. Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders,

Last evening Rich Poort and Bob Curry independently found an adult Western
Sandpiper at Windermere Basin in Hamilton. The bird has been seen again
this morning.

Most of Windermere Basin is closed to public access and the bird is tricky
to see from publicly-accessible vantage points. These public vantage points
are accessed from the parking lot/trail off of Eastport Drive (
https://goo.gl/maps/Sv2feiywKLxPL5PL8). A spotting scope would be
necessary/highly beneficial.

Good birding!
