[Ontbirds] Northern Hawk Owl and Ruffed Grouse - Ottawa

2008-12-25 Thread REMY POULIN
Hi,
Took a short break from the festivities this afternoon to do some birding.
After seeing the reports of the Northern Hawk Owl on Hastings Street, I dropped
by for 15 minutes at around 2:30 and had great views of the bird sitting up in
a tree.  At one point, it was mobbed by a Hairy Woodpecker.
Then visited the Hilda Rd feeder at Shirley's Bay.  Nothing out of the
ordinary, but while backing the car out to exit the NCC parking area at approx
3:25, I saw two Ruffed Grouse about 4 feet up a tree at the back (east side) of
the parking lot.
Merry Christmas.

[Ontbirds]Snowy Owls on Wolfe Island

2008-02-24 Thread REMY POULIN
Quick trip to Wolfe Island Sunday morning, 24 Feb 08 and managed to find two
SNOWY OWLS perched on opposite sides of the same tree just south of Baseline Rd
about halfway between 5th Line and #95.
The hawks were not nearly as numerous as previously reported. Saw only one
RED-TAILED HAWK and eight ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. All were found west of #95. In
addition, observed HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTINGS, MUTE SWANS and two very
cooperative RING-NECKED PHEASANTS, the latter just off #95 not too far from the
ferry wharf to Cape Vincent. Finally, two coyotes were seen in the field west
of the intersection of 9th Line and Carpenter Point Rd.
Directions: take the ferry to the island from the foot of Barrack St in
downtown Kingston.

  Cheers,

[Ontbirds]Townsend's Solitaire in Ottawa

2008-01-06 Thread REMY POULIN
Saw the Townsend's Solitaire this morning (Sunday, 6 Jan) shortly after 9. It
was initially perched on the wire just north of #4 Millbrook Cres. It then
moved up to the top of the tree behind that same house where it remained for a
good five minutes.

Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 to Parkdale Ave. Go south on Parkdale
to Carling Ave. turn right and then left onto Fisher Ave. Follow Fisher south
past Baseline Road and watch for Deer Park Road on your right. Turn right and
go to Millbrook Cres. and turn left.
