Re: [Ontbirds] Black-throated Sparrow - Burlington area

2019-11-05 Thread Richard Poort via ONTBIRDS
The Black-throated Sparrow has been reported again today in the same area
as before.
(along the Sheldon Creek Trail near Cottontail Court all afternoon today.
GPS coordinates: 43.3767158, -79.7299756)

I am not there, just passing the information along for those interested.

Take Burloak Dr south from the QEW to Wavecrest St, go east to Creek Path
Ave, head south until you reach Cottontail Court. The path is on the south
end of the court.

[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull - Brantford - Mohawk Lake

2018-12-11 Thread Richard Poort via ONTBIRDS
Today at about 1 pm I stopped in at Mohawk Lake and found a Slaty-backed
Gull. The gulls flush very easily, so walk up very slowly after you park.
The gulls all flushed due to an eagle or vulture when I was there, but they
did start to come back.

Another interesting gull that noticed earlier looked like a hybrid of LBBG
x HEGU

Cheers,
Rich

Best viewed from Greenwich St.
Take Garden Ave exit off the 403, head south to Colborne, take that west to
Locks Rd.
Locks Rd turns into Mohawk St.
Turn north onto Greenwich Ave and the lake is on the north side (your right)
There are a few spots to park and look from along the road.

Re: [Ontbirds] Saturday OFO Outing-Hamilton

2018-09-22 Thread Richard Poort via ONTBIRDS
Today 15 people joined in for a short walk along the Hamilton waterfront
near Hutches. Winds were good for a lakewatch, but due to time constraints
we moved in land. We had 40 species in 2 hours.
Highlights were a Yellow-billed Cuckoo showing well for a few members in
the group and a few early Hermit Thrushes.
Birding was a little slow, but the company was good.

Thanks to all who joined in and let's hope next year is better.

If you want me to share the ebird checklist from today, please feel free to
email me.

Take Highway 6 South to Port Dover and drive straight on Walker St. to the

There are currently four fish crows in Port Dalhousie calling and flying

I am on the east side, but they can be seen and heard from both sides of

Directions: QEW Niagara - exit Ontario Street, St. Catharines, head north
to Lighthouse Rd, turn left (west) and follow until the end. They are
around the parking lot.

Re: [Ontbirds] UPDATE Western Grebe Saddington Park Port Credit

2017-03-21 Thread Richard Poort via ONTBIRDS
Birders,

My friend Mourad had the bird this evening close to shore near the east
side of the park. It appears that it is a Western Grebe. He sent me a photo
as well.
I had long distance looks at it around lunch near the west side of the park.

Good birding.

We refound this grebe about an hour ago and although it's at least 1km away
I am pretty confident that it's a Western Grebe due to the apparent amount
of blackish colour on its upper face. It was much too far for even remotely
identifiable photos or prolonged looks unfortunately, but it was readily
findable a handful of times when its head was up.

It was in a loose group of about 20 Red-necked Grebes around the border
between the lighter blue and darker blue water, almost directly in line
with the fenced off rock spit found by walking south from the parking lot
of Saddington Park in Port Credit. We walked about 100m past this spot and
viewed from the tip of the hill for a higher angle.

Good luck to anyone trying for it! There were a few birders there when we
were leaving and we gave them as detailed of directions as possible. See
Barb's instructions below for general directions. Hopefully it comes closer
to shore tonight or tomorrow!
