[Ontbirds] Chuck-will's-widow, Carden Alvar: NO

2010-08-03 Thread Dan Bone
I did not hear the Chuck-will's-widow last night ( August 2, 2010). I was there
from 9:03 to 9:45 p.m.. A Whip-poor-will started calling last night at 9:05
from the exact place that Chuck had always started calling (from the trees just
south of Doyle Road where the power lines cross). That had never happened
before in the times I had been there.
A birder from Scarborough, unfamiliar with the Chuck-will's-widow call,
reported to me that on Thursday, July 29 she heard 2 different calls i.e.
perhaps Whip-poor-will and Chuck-will's-widow.
If any birders have any recent evidence of the presence or absence of the
Chuck-will's-widow on Doyle road please email me or phone me. The last
confirmation is July 25, 2010.

2010-07-26 Thread Dan Bone
Last night, Sunday, July 25, the Chuck-will's-widow began singing at 9:10 p.m.
near the power line crossing making 58 calls in 5 minutes (a couple from
Wiarton counted) and did not call again until 9:57. Two Whip-poor-wills sang
regularly from 9:30 until 10:00 when everything fell silent. I left at 10:10.

Attendance: 5 cars, 8 people. 2 birders drove from Wiarton, 2 birders from
London, ON and another from Hamilton were vacationing in the area and dropped
by to see Chuck. 3 of us were locals who check Chuck once a week or so.

If the birders mentioned above heard or saw anything that I might have missed
please let us know.

The Chuck-will's-widow started singing at 9:13 p.m. and stopped at 9:19.
Started again at 9:27. At 9:33 two Whip-poor-wills joined in. I left at 9:36
as the mosquitoes were very bad. A bug jacket is recommended. With the waxing
moon it could sing more often. It starts singing from the same spot south of
Doyle road about 350 metres west of the bend in the road, near the hydro lines
and then moves closer to the bend.
I would appreciate an email with any observations you might make.

Chuck-will's-widow started singing very close to south side of road at 9:20
p.m. for 10 minutes. It flew out right overhead and down the road where it
continued to sing only for another 8 minutes. Then it flew across the road and
six of us saw it. It sang again briefly at 10:07 p.m.

The Chuck-will's-widow started calling on the south side of Doyle Road at 9:20
this evening. A couple from the Toronto area was able to glimpse the bird after
it crossed the road in the twilight. I still haven't seen it. It was not
calling as incessantly as it has on other evenings, likely because of the
waning moon and the colder temperatures.
Jim Macey was there to hear Chuck. Jim, along with Gerry Bennett, confirmed a
Chuck-will's-widow near Baldwin in York County some years ago.

The Chuck-will's-widow was singing constantly under the full moon from 12:45
a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, June 25 from the south side of Doyle Road. At one
point it was very close to the road and we heard it growl and click.
Randy Beacler and I finished our Whip-poor-will survey route about midnight and
we drove over from Miner's Bay to see if Chuck was still calling.

Despite the overcast skies and slight drizzle the Chuck-will's-widow started
calling at 9:07 tonight on Doyle Road and was still calling at 9:45 p.m. when
we left. A Whip-poor-will joined in from time to time. Chuck remained on the

the open area under the power lines as he often has done.

.While participating in the Carden Challenge we heard a single calling
Chuck-will's-widow from 10:45 to 11:00 p.m. The Chuck-will's-widow was calling
when we stopped. Later a Whip-poor-will started calling as well which
emphasised the differences in the two calls. Have video recording of the call.
