Folks Just a quick reply to Ontbirds as I had so many send me an email with
suggestions and recommendations.
The little 'fella' appeared to be in very good shape and healthy and strong. A
co-worker took it home and released it to open water. Here's hoping it makes it
to warmer climes.
Thanks again for all the emails.

[Ontbirds] Horned Grebe at Scarborough Bluffs

2012-04-12 Thread johnjeevaratnam
April 11 2012, When walking by the rocks at the Lake Ontario shore I came
across 3 Horned Grebes.

Scarborough Bluffs are located at Brimley Road and Kingston Road. from the 401
East, exit on Brimley Road, drive south all the way to the end, you drive down
a hill to the Bluffs.

If you drive down the road next to the house boats towards the lake and make a
right at the end of the road. Then park at the south west parking, the Grebes
were feeding by the rocks.

Also seen at Scarborough Bluffs were, Killdeer, Black-crowned night heron,
Northern Mockingbird, Red-brested Merganser.

Sharon David, Carol Noel, and I birded Amherst Island this afternoon for two
hours. The highlight of the day was a Horned Grebe which we spotted out on the
water near the turn-off to the Owl Woods along the South Shore Road. Other
birds of note included three Snowy Owls on the island and one in a field in the
village of Millhaven, one Rough-Legged Hawk, two Northern Harriers, three
Long-Tailed Ducks, close to 100 Common Goldeneyes, four Buffleheads, three
Red-Tailed Hawks, four American Kestrels, one Merlin, and three Short-Eared
Owls.

[Ontbirds] Horned Grebe, Long-eared Owl, Varied Thrush and Snowy Owl

2010-01-20 Thread Julia Freedman
At Colonel Sam Smith Park there was a Horned Grebe around 4:30pm, and I stayed
to dusk to verify the type of owl seen last week: It was absolutely a
Long-eared Owl. thanks to all who helped me!

The Varied Thrush put on a good show this morning. The owner seems to put out
the corn around 9-9:30.

The Snowy Owl at 400 and hwy 9 was present again today. It likes to sit on TV
antennae. It was seen on both Strawberry Line and Edward Avenue, just northeast
of the 400/9 junction.

[Ontbirds] HORNED GREBE, RED-NECKED GREBE, various waterfowl at Mitchell Wetland (Lagoons)

2008-04-13 Thread Dave Brown
Hi All,

I managed to take a jaunt out to the Mitchell Wetland ponds (former sewage
lagoons) this afternoon and found that all ponds are now completely free of
ice...and indeed the water levels are the highest I've seen in a long time.

Highlights were a single HORNED GREBE that's close to completing its
pre-alternate molt. and a single RED-NECKED GREBE that's pretty much completed
its molt. They were easily seen in the last pond at the furthest back left of
the property.

I also spotted my first male Tree Swallow for the season cruising low over the
water of the same cell.

There was also a good variety of waterfowl in this same cell:

American Wigeon - 10 Pair
Northern Shoveler - 1 Pair
Ruddy Duck- 3 Pair and 4 lone males
Redhead - 2 Pair
Ringed-necked Duck- 17 pair and 3 lone males
Lesser Scaup - 15 pair
Bufflehead- 22 pair
Green-winged Teal - 2 pair
Blue-winged Teal - 1 lone male
D.C. Cormorant- 5 in flight (did not land)
Mallard - 2 Pair

Also had 20+ singing Savanah Sparrow, 6 Song Sparrow and 4 Horned Lark.

Good Birding!
Dave J Brown
Mitchell, ON

Note: There are no permits required to walk around the Mitchell wetland area.

Directions to Mitchell Wetland Ponds:

From the East (Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, GTA) - take Hwy 8 thru
Stratford heading west to first lights in Mitchell (Wellington St) and
turn left (south) and continue till you hit the T intersection at the
ball diamond. Lagoon cells are straight back behind the ball diamond
and soccer fields and the sewage treatment plant. You can go straight ahead
on the gravel and park next to the berm.

From the London areatake Hwy 23 into Mitchell from the south and
just after you pass the Welcome to Mitchell sign...watch for Frank
St...go right on Frank St and head down over the bridge till you get to
the ball diamond (will be on your right). Again...the cells are behind
the ball diamond and soccer fields. You can go straight ahead
on the gravel and park next to the berm.

From Southampton areatake Hwy 21, to Goderich and then Hwy 8 to
Clinton and down to Mitchell, turn south on Hwy 23 to Frank St. and turn
left on Frank St. and head over the bridge to the ball diamonds (which
will be on your right). You can go straight ahead on the gravel and park

[Ontbirds]Horned Grebe-Fort Erie and Common Redpoll-Chippawa

2007-12-29 Thread Jean and Bob

Hello All,

Today, December 29, my wife and I birded the Niagara River from Fort Erie to
Chippawa and

observed many birds. South of the International Railway Bridge (from the
parking area near Catherine Street), we observed a Horned Grebe at 12:00 pm.
Thanks to the visiting U.S. birders for pointing it out and the Fort Erie
birders allowing us a better view through their scope. A Common Loon was
also observed in this area of the river.

From the Niagara Parkway near the north end of Central Avenue in Fort Erie,

we observed 6 Iceland Gull.

In the area of Miller's Creek Marina at 1:00 pm, 70 Tundra Swan were
observed.

At the feeders in Chippawa at 2:00 pm, we observed 3 Common Redpoll,
possibly a total of 6 were present. 3 Tufted Titmouse were also observed.

Bob Highcock Jean Hampson
St. Catharines, ON

Directions:

In Fort Erie, exit the QEW at the Central Avenue exit. Turn right on to
Central Avenue and continue towards the river and head north (turning left)
on the Niagara Parkway (Niagara Blvd.). The parking area south of the
International Railway Bridge is 1.5 km from the south end of Central Avenue
and on the right. Catherine Street will be on the left. Roughly 0.5 km
further north is where the north end of Central Avenue meets the Niagara
Parkway. Miller's Creek Marina is 5-6 km from Catherine St., heading north
on the Niagara Parkway.

The Feeders in Chippawa:

From Tim Horton's turn left on to Portage Rd., turn left at Chippawa

Parkway, turn right at Thomas Street. The feeders are at the last house on
the right.

An early Spring visit to Minesing Swamp this afternoon brought mixed
results. The McKinnon Road entrance was flooded and inacessible. But
the n.e. section off Ronald Rd. near the village of Minesing was
loaded with waterfowl, including 2 Greater White-fronted Geese. Also
seen here were Canada Geese, Mallards, Black Ducks, Pintail, Wood
Duck, Common Goldeneye, Common Mergansers, Killdeer, Rough-legged Hawk
(dark-phase), Northern Harrier, many Wild Turkeys, Horned Larks, and
blackbirds. The gulls included 3 Glaucous.
Herring Gulls were seen on 4 occasions capturing Meadow Voles
which had been forced to surface from their flooded burrows.
Directions: From Barrie, take # 90 west towards Angus. At George
Johnston Rd. (#28), go north to Minesing village. Turn left on Ronald
